Games are an outlet for people's natural need for competition, it's been with us since we were living in trees. But EVE, as football and any other game, should in fact not be taken too seriously, and people should be reminded of it when they start getting too involved i.e kicking people on the streets when manchester wins or staying home from work to go mine instead or using a lot of their personal time to write deep and involved analytical letters about the subject on the forums

After the game got its name, football. You see, they kick the ball with their feet hence the name foot-ball.
Shouldnt FIFA sue NFL because they ripped off their name or something?

Probably shortly after the first goalie got PO'd about having to run after every ball he let through.
Way to go making me hijack my own thread
Back to the topic at hand:
Firstly thank everyone for some really interesting replies. Judging by all the responses, I believe we should continue to indeed call EVE a Game.
However I strongly recommend that we stop using the word "Just" when describing any game at all.
Humanity and gaming are so closely intertwined that to belittle these activities with the words "Just" or "Only" is to make fun of every professional sportsman in the world. It also indicated a lack of understanding about the true nature of humanity and our never ending struggle for......well for whatever it is YOU are struggling for, but we are all competing to a greater or lesser extent.
Sure most of us dont make money from EVE, but there are people whom I have met ingame who can only be classified as a "Pro".
I hereby move that we restrict ourselves to saying: : "It's a Game" in all future references. "Just" simply has no place in the description of something which can mean so much to people.

Yes, I see it as an attempt of a hostile takeover and I'd like to see these people fail and the old spirit survive that makes a clear cut between RL and game.
EVE wasn't meant as an investment for RL currency, except in the form of playtime. It was meant as a pvp game. Some players made the stupid step / developed the stupid thoughts that they could buy more than just play time and that it would guarantee them something in return.
It's like if Microsoft writes that you shouldn't use Windows for sensitive stuff like controlling an atomic plant or a space shuttle and you do it anyway. Then it makes *boom* and you cry.

Killing someone in-game isn't bringing them harm. It's executing a function of the game. It's not judging their thoughts. And if they want to detatch themselves from reality and make the game more than it is, in their own minds, that still doesn't change the nature of the game.
It doesn't make the game stop being a game, just because they want it to be so. As long as things are being done within the rules and the intent of the game design (ie: login/logout exploits are obviously not 'features', nor the intended use of logging in and out of the game) - then, well, sorry. That's the game we all play. It pertains equally to every one of us.
We can't go around being oversensitive in a PvP game because we're afraid we might hurt someone's feelings. Otherwise it spirals out of control, and pretty soon it's not even touch (American) football. No tackling allowed. That's not what this game is. There are plenty of games out there with no risk of loss, no one should complain about losing things due to legitimate means - regardless of the motivation behind the cause of loss - when you *know* full well the nature of the game.
And if everyone's so concerned about stepping on someone else's toes and infringing on their virtual escape - what about the pirates that ruthlessly blow up people in game without seeming rhyme or reason? Maybe they really want to live out a virtual existence mirroring Edward Teach or Bart Roberts or some of the other more vile pirates through history. Being within the game mechanics, isn't that their right too? Why should we tell them they can't play a certain way if it's within the bounds of the game?
It's like two people playing Monopoly - one wants everyone to stockpile all the properties first, then put down hotels. The other wants to throw down hotels as soon as he gets each set of properties, and hope for a swift victory. Why tell the more aggressive one he can't do that, simply because the other wants to draw the game out longer?
At the end of the day, it is just a game. It's a virtual realm with a set of rules that govern it. And anything you do inside those rules is perfectly fine, even encouraged by the game design. The motivation behind it is irrelevant. And if someone takes it too personally when something happens to them in-game, it really is time for an intervention. There are far larger issues at hand than simply losing some in game ISK/cargo/equipment/ships.
