I have to agree with the dude that mentioned the dogs from resident evil 1. I also have to say that Duriel from diablo 2 had my heart beating for about an hour. Oh, and the headcrabs from half-life

Well most scariest is no doubt System shock 2.. its quite easy to live into the story... all those voice messages.. etc etc.. strange sound here and there.. It had a fantastic atmosphere to feel "alone and afraid"
i haven't tried to fear yet .. but will do soon as i get myself a better comp.
but i mark System shock 2 as the best psychological horror games ever..
imo off course --------------------------------------------- fallen pilot, lost in space

Man.. i was about to post with that..
System Shock 2 scared the absolute **** out of me.. Id hear those robot dudes saying where are you.. i cant find you.. and the sound was like it was right behind ya.. Some amount of times i ended up shooting off my entire magazine on the ak47 with fright when you'd turn around and see one of the beasties.. Probably diddnt help that it had amazing surround sound built into the game at the time, and I was playing it in the dark with my new speaker set..
I swear.. I had to just save the game.. and turn it off.. :P

I think i should put Eve aside for a while and get me F.E.A.R. - heard about it, but never played it.
@ topic: Years ago that Yeti-like monster from Quake 2 (my first FPS, i think) gave me the creeps, when oc the only light in the room was the monitor, with headphones, in a new appartment.
Scariest game ever: Silent Hill - The Room. Period. Later in the game I spend like ages not leaving the room, but looking out the window or the door viewer watching "normal life" go by - i just did not want to go down there again. I then quit the game when even The Room began to be not the "safe harbour" anymore |

System Shock 2, single most scary game I have ever played in my life.
Superb use of sound and lighting. Possibility of gun jams, the cool calm voice of the insane computer system, the whispers.... the whispers....
I need to play that stuff again!!!

Genestealers from space hulk. Playing that with light offs, knowing they could (and often did) emerge silently from the wall on your back, and that your weapons would either jam randommly or be extremely short on ammunitions. Add a very stressing music, action coming suddenly from several directions, and you get a game that will make your heart pump even before you launch it.
- Alma. almost as scary.
- The face-huggers from AVP.

ayeee thats another one, never bought the full game just played the demo but the bit where she appears at the top of the ladder I jumped so hard I fell out the chair
Fear was lame. It never really scared you, it just made you jump by having **** happen real fast.
Anyway, I'm probably going to have to go with the aliens from AvP 1 and 2.
Anyone else remember slowly creeping along a corridor, hearing the constant "tick.. tick.. tick.. tick.." of the motion tracker, seeing no hostiles for a while... then.. you get two or three blips, they should be just up the corridor, but you can't see **** 'cause it's dark... then three aliens pounce on you and you frantically run backwards, shooting your pulse rifle seemingly at random, because you can't really see the bastards, just occasional flashses of claws...
That game really made my heart pound.

System shock 2 in general scared the crap out of me, and still does on after the first couple of levels which I know quite well. The atmosphere is so incredibly scary throughout the game.
Aliens Vs Predator 1 : The first level, up the lift as a marine, 'kin hell, that's scary bit with the montion tracker, the scrolling lights, and the alien that runs full pelt at you on the ceiling once you're about 10 foot down from the tv screen. After that, it's not so scary, just jumpy, as you get used to what to look for when they should jump out at you.
Fear...is a meh, you get desensitised about half way through, but the first few times you meet alma it really is brown pants time.
Blood is also really scary for some reason (even if it is based on the duke3d or doom1 engine), I'd go recommend you play it, the screams from when you shoot an acolyte with the flare gun are nightmarish, and again has a great atmosphere.
There's not really that many monsters that are that scary, Resident evil didnt really have scary monsters at all, just ones that made you jump, same goes for aliens and fear.
I'd probably cast a vote at the hybrids from system shock, just for the pipe dragging and moaning if they havnt seen you.

Jason in Friday the 13th on C64, not really Jason himself but as soon as the music started playing I killed everyone, just to be sure.
The idea of the game was that Jason was masking as other people and could transform at any given time to surprise you. Well, he need not murder people when I'm out camping, I took them all out for him.

Oooh yeah, completely forgot that. Particularly the frantic mashing of buttons to try and fend it off and squelch it, then trying to quickly gun down the next one in the swarm before it reaches you too, manic |

Might sound truly odd....but for me it were those Half Life monsters that were hanging on the roof and let their tongue down. I dunno how often i strafed into 'em while i was fighting some enemies there and suddenly you hear that slurp'ing sound and you get sucked up. gah...really got the creeps from that.
Resident Evil 2 and Doom 3 also definatly make my list...really had some good shockers in it.
F.E.A.R. I didn't like either nor did i find it scary, was actually pretty dull for me. also didn't play it through tho, maybe will continue it in some time when I'm done with my exams hehe :)

I must say that when X-COM: Terror from the Deep came out when I was about 10 or so, Tentaculats were my worst nightmare. Well, most of the game scared me ****less actually. Still, that game is one of my all-time favourites.

Also, the hotel in VTM:Bloodlines was moderately scary too.

Edited by: Petite Pierre on 16/09/2006 17:23:59 No question about it, System Shock 2.
I still have it on my hdd, as a iso file, gfx updates handy. Whenever you need a good gaming experience, an experience that just immerses you in this terrific universe, System Shock 2 is the game you need to play.
Excellent use of sounds, well scripted AI (for that age), convincing environment, and oh god...
"..Your voice is not ours..." WHAM ! one of them mutated humans would attack you with a steel bar, making you jump out of your chair.
And then, when all's silent, and you pant your soul out, around the corner, loading your last 2 bullets in your gun that's about to jam... the alarm goes off.

- A few of the "ghostly" cutscenes in Clive Barker's Undying... - The "ghost" scenes in Vampire: Masquerade - Bloodlines
The only thing that scared me about Doom3 was the stupidity of the marines not to tape the torch to the barrel of the in-use weapon, and replace the batteries as required...

Scariest? Hard to say. Alien Versus Predator 2 was pretty damn scary as a marine, though I didn't even play it all that far. Same with Doom III. FEAR was a bit chilly indeed. Quake was scary at first when it was new and I was younger There's not nearly enough scary games
