IÆve always liked these type of threads so heres a new one for you all to think about.
Admit it, there is always one type of monster in a game that made your heart beat a little faster and the cold sweat appear on your forehead when you heard him lurking or met him jumping out a corner at you. Mine was always this guy but what was yours?
What was your scariest game monster?

There once was an Absorbtion Beast, Who came from a room to the East. "Good morning!" he said, Then bashed in my head, And now I am sadly deceased.
Those things always frightened the bejeezus out of me when one trundled into the room. ________________________________________________

I can remember playing Halo for the first time and getting to the lvl where you meet the Flood for the first time.
The gurgling sounds of the monsters and the strange little cries of the spore things in full surround sound with the EAX feature on just before they pounced was enough to make me actualy scream like a girl and stop playing.
When I went to bed my GF asked me what was wrong cos she had heard me making "strange screaming sounds" through the wall. _______________________________________________

I ken o' the most horrendous, most terrifying monster anyone has e'er set eyes upon...
an' it lives in no game, oh no laddie... this one's no "digital" monster made by some fancy code, nah, this one's as terrible as death an' as real as the picture on yer teleh. I'll sum it up quickly so as not to scare any chilun's who be about... Moomins, "The Groke" she be also known as the "Ice Queen" to some'n tha' dun know er as well, but when I wer but a tiny liddle ba-boh I saw her me'sen and it scared the livin' jeesus outta me. There ain't no scarier beast than The Groke, that much i'm sure'a.

Edited by: Dred ''Morte on 14/09/2006 20:58:50 Those baby-insect-fishy like monsters.. what were their name? Cherubs? Something Like. Doom III monsters. They would show up in numbers, strike you hard and fast, and drop your fps really low making them harder to kill. I remember that when I started hearing their sounds, I'd launch all of my grenades in every angle to the next room. Those things just freaked me out. I used the BFG9000 and 1 or 2 other powerfull weapons for the first time against those things.

Yes, an Abyran'ra from GemStone IV (Yeah, so it's text. But these things are crazypowerful, and are a pain to kill)
A wreath of thirteen black serpents ring the abyran'ra's head, bestowing it a full crown of the twisting vipers as they writhe back and forth in an undulating, hypnotic fashion. Its pale, lidless eyes are devoid of pupils -- merely rippling with faint hints of color every few moments. Twin pairs of fangs peek out from beneath its thin lips, and the smoothness of its skin fades away into sleek scales below its abdomen, its lower body tapering into a massive, sinuous tail like that of a snake's. Its elongated, spindly fingers end in scythe-like black talons, their razored edges gleaming with the faintest light as they weave sinuous patterns in swift, slicing arcs.
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra scythes its talons back and forth as it hisses a sibilant invocation. A spiky mottled black abyran'ra raises its hands above its head as luminescent slivers of incarnadine slither across its palms!
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra slithers in and gathers its coils about itself. A spiky mottled black abyran'ra slithers in, the ebon serpents atop its head writhing menacingly. A spiky mottled black abyran'ra slithers in, its pupiless eyes surveying the area. A spiky mottled black abyran'ra slithers in, swaying hypnotically back and forth on its sinuous coils.
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra dips its head up and down, jerking from side to side as it lets loose a flowing hiss.
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra tries to sink its curved fangs into you! AS: +590 vs DS: +351 with AvD: +32 + d100 roll: +80 = +351 ... and hits for 109 points of damage! Neck skewered, sliding past the throat and spine! That looks painful. You are stunned for 7 rounds!
The serpents upon a spiky mottled black abyran'ra's head writhe and undulate in exultation!
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra descends upon your corpse, its talons moving in swift, sweeping arcs across your back as its forked tongue darts in and out quickly.
After a moment, the abyran'ra plunges its hand into the base of your neck and rips out your spine in one fluid movement!
The mottled black abyran'ra rises up on its coils and runs its scythe-like talons over the blood-drenched spine in a sinuous fashion, a faint webwork of incarnadine energy lacing across its surface. After a moment, it begins to grow longer and longer, its bony protrusions melding into razored blades that wreath it on all sides. With one swift, sharp ***** of the whip-like bone, the blood drenching the bladed spine bursts into flames -- the rippling scarlet hue cast by the blaze washing over the abyran'ra's face in lurid waves.
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra *****s its flaming elven spine, the razored bone-blades edging it blazing even higher with lurid crimson fire.
A spiky mottled black abyran'ra suddenly thrusts its hands forth, its spindly, serpentine fingers tracing a complex pattern in the air -- the intertwined sigils clearly visible as dark crimson light trails from the abyran'ra's fingertips to form an undulating webwork of otherworldly beauty -- then it vanishes.

Edited by: Nicholas Barker on 15/09/2006 00:29:47 i'm usually too drunk to get scared. But there's parts in FEAR much worse than that, infact that part didn't bother me much at all. It's the parts where she's grown up that **** me up. Also, i have a slight hearing problem that actually somtimes makes the sounds you hear on the radio before somthing ****** up happens, so somtimes i'm just walking around the house and i hear the noises and **** myself. However, the worst part is when you're just killing the soldiers and then you walk around a corner to check out a cubicle and she just crawls towards you liek a ******* nutter and you **** yourself, and jump, firing your gun while pushing forward causing your char to take out the entire wall with w/e gun he's carrying. -------------------------------------

when tomb raider first came out i was scared of the T-Rex on the third level. as you walked into the lost valley you'd hear this distant thudding and then this giant monster would turn up and charge at you.
Actually i'm ashamed to admit that my mum killed this thing before i did, me and my little sister were too scared to fight it so we paused the game, and told my mum which buttons to keep pressing (back, jump and shoot (down, triangle and X iirc)), and then my sister hit unpause and me and her ran out of the room until my mum told us "the dinosaur has fallen down".
looking back i'm LOL'ing right now, but i guess that shows how young i am that i had to get my mummy to fight dinosaurs in tomb raider 1.

Haunts from Thief
They are fast, hit hard and if you get jumped by one while sneaking you just start running because there is nothing else to do.
If you are sneaking past a group, while they murmer "flames around you, flames, nothing but flames burning your flesh" "your soul cannot be saved" and recite some of the prayers of the order they used to belong to, then you step on something noisy and suddenly their voices all rise up in unison insisting that you become one like them. But then you've made it to a safe piece of shadow and eventually they give up and go back to their patrols, wondering if they missed "a chance to murder".

This is an odd thing.. many people mention F.E.A.R as being particularly scary for them but to me it wasn't, I can't play quake or doom because THEY scare me but I breezed my way through F.E.A.R, Infact, the only part of fear that scared me was at the very beginning, your team goes into that first building and in the first room one of your team-mates says something to you through a window on your left, I didn't expect it is all. That was it, the rest never bothered me and by the end when everything had gone ****-up and those ghost things are chasing you down.. meh.. I didn't feel anything. I have to say the same goes for Half-life 2, nothing scared me about that, I have a theory about it, things that are humanoid don't bother me, could that be it? Does anyone else feel that? The groke = scared the living **** out of me, HL2 = almost all the enemies were humanoid, didn't bother me. I realise this is actually backwards to what most people say, i.e it's a humanoid enemy that is most scary but surely there are others who feel the same as me? I can mow down an army of funny looking men but put one mishapen quivering THING against me and i'll run like a little sissy girl.

Vampires: Masquerade. First mission, that hotel.. Oh my. That was freaking scary! An enemy around, but you could not see him. And the litle ghost on his tri-bike.. I had to turn off the PC halfway through, playing in a dark room at 3AM :P

There where a couple of monsters in the first "Alone in the dark" game.
Espescially the first one in the first room. All of a sudden a freakin wherewolf jumps in through the window. Not ever having seen any game like that before (i doubt there where any earlier 3D horror games) made it so much worse.

Well most scariest is no doubt System shock 2.. its quite easy to live into the story... all those voice messages.. etc etc.. strange sound here and there.. It had a fantastic atmosphere to feel "alone and afraid"
i haven't tried to fear yet .. but will do soon as i get myself a better comp.

I think i should put Eve aside for a while and get me F.E.A.R. - heard about it, but never played it.
@ topic: Years ago that Yeti-like monster from Quake 2 (my first FPS, i think) gave me the creeps, when oc the only light in the room was the monitor, with headphones, in a new appartment.
Scariest game ever: Silent Hill - The Room. Period. Later in the game I spend like ages not leaving the room, but looking out the window or the door viewer watching "normal life" go by - i just did not want to go down there again. I then quit the game when even The Room began to be not the "safe harbour" anymore |

Genestealers from space hulk. Playing that with light offs, knowing they could (and often did) emerge silently from the wall on your back, and that your weapons would either jam randommly or be extremely short on ammunitions. Fear was lame. It never really scared you, it just made you jump by having **** happen real fast.
Anyway, I'm probably going to have to go with the aliens from AvP 1 and 2.
Anyone else remember slowly creeping along a corridor, hearing the constant "tick.. tick.. tick.. tick.." of the motion tracker, seeing no hostiles for a while... then.. you get two or three blips, they should be just up the corridor, but you can't see **** 'cause it's dark... then three aliens pounce on you and you frantically run backwards, shooting your pulse rifle seemingly at random, because you can't really see the bastards, just occasional flashses of claws...
That game really made my heart pound.

System shock 2 in general scared the crap out of me, and still does on after the first couple of levels which I know quite well. The atmosphere is so incredibly scary throughout the game.
Aliens Vs Predator 1 : The first level, up the lift as a marine, 'kin hell, that's scary bit with the montion tracker, the scrolling lights, and the alien that runs full pelt at you on the ceiling once you're about 10 foot down from the tv screen. After that, it's not so scary, just jumpy, as you get used to what to look for when they should jump out at you.
Fear...is a meh, you get desensitised about half way through, but the first few times you meet alma it really is brown pants time.
Blood is also really scary for some reason (even if it is based on the duke3d or doom1 engine), I'd go recommend you play it, the screams from when you shoot an acolyte with the flare gun are nightmarish, and again has a great atmosphere.
There's not really that many monsters that are that scary, Resident evil didnt really have scary monsters at all, just ones that made you jump, same goes for aliens and fear.
I'd probably cast a vote at the hybrids from system shock, just for the pipe dragging and moaning if they havnt seen you.

Jason in Friday the 13th on C64, not really Jason himself but as soon as the music started playing I killed everyone, just to be sure.
The idea of the game was that Jason was masking as other people and could transform at any given time to surprise you. Well, he need not murder people when I'm out camping, I took them all out for him.

I dunno how often i strafed into 'em while i was fighting some enemies there and suddenly you hear that slurp'ing sound and you get sucked up. gah...really got the creeps from that.
Resident Evil 2 and Doom 3 also definatly make my list...really had some good shockers in it.

Excellent use of sounds, well scripted AI (for that age), convincing environment, and oh god...

PS2's "Shadow of the colossus". The objective? kill the colossus that prowl arround the land (yes several). It's somewhat a descendant of ICO in terms of base, but much more darker and dramatic (thus the increased usage of greys).
It's one of those great games that are praised by the critics but never hit the spotlight due to a complex story and an audience that is more addicted to "SHOOT HERE KILL THERE SMASH ALL!" and not something that requires more brain power or a sense of stetical beauty

The aliens from the first AvP game. They looked scary, made scary noises, were bloody fast and due to the way the game was coded could surprise you every time. There were some fixed enemy spawns, but for the most part, enemy generation was random, each time through the game the you'd get different numbers of enemies in different random areas. You never knew where they were going to come from or how many of them there would be. In AvP2, like most FPS games, once you've played it through a couple of times you can just auto-pilot through the levels knowing where every enemy is, you can often even fire the shot that will kill them before you even see them in some cases (e.g. fire a grenade at an area before the crossing trigger area that makes the alien pop out in that area, *bang*, dead before it knew what hit it etc.).

One thing that made Doom III scary way more than the stupid "cupboard monsters" (which are what put me off the game too soon) was the sounds. With a decent subwoofer (and no, that doesn't include the crappy computer speaker sets) the environment felt rather... vivid, with all the hydraulic pumps and such making you twitchy as you were sneaking around waiting to be maimed at any moment The game just ain't the same with a proper subwoofer

Well, I probably won't mention anything not said in this thread, but here I go anyways.
1) Resident Evil 2, arguably the best in the series and don't give me the RE4 crap . Man, I love that game.
2) AVP 2. Marines of course, especially the first two, three levels. The background sound of the Motion Tracker, the gas streams and flickering lights. Oh yeah, pure terror.
3) Doom 3, before you have any equipment except the flashlight. I always wondered why an Elite Marine, infiltrating an outpost that has been severely infiltrated by demons and demonic powers starts off with a flashlight, but hey, it works
4) Although I've only played the Demo, FEAR springs to mind, rarely have I experienced something as horrifying when Alma suddenly materializes herself at the worst time, in the worst thinkable place.
5) The first Silent Hill. I won't even go into details here. Much respect.
Guess that's about all I can remember right now.

If you are going to check out FEAR, make sure you can play it with good settings. If you have to put everything on low to play it, then you are going to miss out on a great game, and it won't be as scary as playing it with high settings.
Also, here is a quick guide to FEAR graphic settings, if you have a crappy comp, you should be able to get the most out of it.
CONTAINS ONE SPOILER (A picture of alma), But, if you have played the demo, it isn't anything knew, and it's already been talked about in this thread.

An awful lot of Silent Hill A fair bit of Project Zero
The giant spiders in Tomb Raider 2. Always creeped me out.....
If you want to go into non-monster bits, the scariest thing ever was one section of Silent Hill 3 which was actually scary enough that I had to turn the game off. Only time that has ever happened to me. ----------

Resident Evil: Nemesis.
I've never been so scared in my life as that, I must've skipped a beat or something.
You've just ran away from an unkillable mutant 8 foot tall zombie guy who's just finished eating your mates, you run past him into the police station and lock the door, several minutes later after wandering through the building, you hear a window smash.
You KNOW he's coming for you, and there's nothing you can do, he's invincible and will stick a tentacle through your brain if you give him half a chance.
So slowly heart beating you get to the top of the stairs, the screen goes black and the classic Resi scene were all you see is the stairs on a pitch black background, and it's silent except for you footsteps. You get to the bottom of the stairs expecting to see nemesis running at you down the corridor, or bursting out of a door further down the corridor. The one thing you do not expect, is for that window your stood right next to to crash inwards and a massive 8 foot tall thing to jump at you roaring and ready to eat you.
I swear, I'm never playing a game like that in the dark again. ------

Edited by: Freyjan on 18/09/2006 15:28:20 Clock Tower for the Playstation. First time I played that game I must've been about 11 or 12 years old maybe. Wasn't a wonderful game by any means, but I have yet to find a game that can quite match its style of creepiness. Scissorman and those 'ka-shink ka-shink' sounds he made with his 6-foot long scissors while chasing you after he found you staring at your newly departed friend whose entrails are on the floor...fun times. I need to ebay me a copy of that game, I miss it...
Also, the section in Resident Evil 2 where the licker jumps through the interrogation room window. Scared the ever-loving **** out of me the first time I saw it. Was half-expecting something to happen, but not that suddenly.

Also entering the old sanitarium house where the hag was supposed to live creeped me out, every part of it, specially the attic. Then the Hag wich was supposed to be so scary was just actually dumb looking and stupid. And she looked different in every cut-scene AND The game.
I remember playing the marine from AVP. I remember playing the FEAR Demo. I remember playing DOOM III and those creepy spiders, holding the flashlight. I remember Resident Evil 4 alone 4 o clock at night alone in my basement with not a glympse of light but the television and the gamecube. I remember the flood from Halo. Them and also the huge bloated ones with a swarm of venomous headcrabs. That sound they make... and they tend to come out of nowhere a lot of times.
And also the regular headcrab zombies. They aren't exactly scary, but its pretty disturbing when you walk into a room and everything "dead" on the floor starts getting up.

I couldnt really think of any when I first read the OP, but from the replies the memories come (screaming? :) ) back
avp1 as marine - ugh, just plain old skool scary doom 3 when you first encounter the first half robot/bull jobbie (bursts through a wall) system shock 2 - hybrids and close combat weapons, and never having enough ammo to reassuringly spray at random stuff first time I saw a headcrab in halflife I jumped, but only cheap scares after that FEAR had me freaked out a good bit - nasty with the flashbacks etc max payne had a really fscked up part in it - with a crying baby soundtrack (always a winner ) clive barkers undying has a good deal of nastiness in it too think the stealth dudes in the original doom scared me a good bit too at the time ('fore I discovered the chainsaw, then I just enjoyed encountering em)
I'll prolly think of more
nice thread!
