Me, I'm more annoyed with people who mix numbers into their names, or even worse, can't be bothered to begin the name with capital letters like an adult.
To each his own I guess...

Most people can't even decently copy something.
For example, every moron knows that one Amarr ship is called an "Apocalypse". So how the hell is it possible people use the word "Apocelypse" in their sig.
And on a sidenote (and I know I'm gonna get flamed for this), I know from experience that the only reason most latin-based language (mostly french, italian and spanish) speaking gamers speak english at all is computers, games and internet. For some reason that is unknown to me, those societies just don't seem to be able to educate their people in speaking the world language. Maybe it's because they re-dub all their english television series/movies or maybe it's simply a problem with the priorities in their school system.
Strange indeed...

They are able to, but their first priority is to safe their own language and culture.
English is no world language (by far not yet). English is internet language and very useful because many countries actually teach English as 2nd or 3rd language.
Btw, why don't you speak Chinese, like 1/4 of the world population?

Edited by: Aidemorc on 21/10/2003 12:13:20 Just to clarify my point: I'm not ranting against misspelling as such (my written english is full of typos and grammatical errors - and we all write so damn fast in this game that even the best among us sometimes creates texts that only chatbots can understand).
Signatures functions as a hint to what our avatars are like - and they are published every single time we make a comment in the forums. I can only see them as personal commercials. Having to watch poorly made commercials (however clever the idea behind them may be) is fun the first time, but not endlessly.
You have all the time in the world to make sure it's not misspelled (unless that is the point you're trying to make), so why not?

In my experience, the problem with poor spelling and grammar does not lie with the foreigners, but rather with the native speakers. Some of the posts I see from American / UK players on these forums are frankly appalling.

Edited by: Indigo Seqi on 21/10/2003 12:23:08 I don't speak Chinese because English is the world's leading language in trade, politics and science, how obvious is that? As soon as Chinese is more useful to me in international affairs, I'll try and learn Chinese, no problem.
And as for the "would you want us all to be alike" thing: I'm not saying everybody should adopt English as their main language. I'm also not saying it is a terrible thing to speak bad english.
I said in the first part of my post: It's sad if you can't even reproduce the name of something you read somewhere. This counts for pretty much anyone, not only foreign speakers. If I'm doing stuff with a Korean guy and I'm dealing with objects that have Korean names, you can be damned sure I will get their names right. Because it's simply a matter of looking at the word in one spot and reproducing it in another.
And I said: English is a very important language to be able to speak. Many of the group of people I referred to earlier speaks English just fine (because of games/computers/internet/etc.) and there is nothing wrong with lacking a bit of grammar or spelling skills here and there if English isn't your native language.
HOWEVER, I'm Dutch myself and I tend to visit other countries in Europe a fair amount of times per year. And just about every time I visit these other countries, I'm confronted with people that don't speak any English at all. It just happens to be that the worst problems seem to be in the latin-based language speaking countries. That's just something I don't think is acceptable in todays world.
Then there are people with a reading disorder and they are quite obviously excused from any errors they may have in their use of written language, be it their native one or otherwise.
Before someone goes whining about my edit: I added a paragraph, chill.

Have any of you noticed the difference in pronounciation(miss spelled i'm sure) of english words and the way the are spelled. Its completly wrong in some cases. Take the word "University" for example. Its really pronounced something like "Yuniversity". I have a hard time spelling in english because english is a hard language to spell in. I've heard from people that it is the hardest language to learn because of this. ----------------------------------------------- Life is a sexually transmitted disease. ---------------------------------------------- (\_/) (O.o) (> <) |

I don't understand how you can think it hard to learn, I had picked it up by the age of 3.

You have my sympathies. English does have an absurd collection of spellings and pronunciations (I coughed up some dough - which I ought never to have eaten - while sitting on a thoroughly rough bough of the tree throughout.)

On the plus side, its grammar is absolutely minimal. There are no genders, very few cases, and words don't change their endings/beginnings when affected by prepositions (on the table, under the table, by the table, through the table ... it's always table, regardless.)
The former, and possibly the latter as well, is because of English being a hybrid of damn near every other language in the world, thanks to everyone in Europe invading us before 1066, and us invading most everybody else after 1600. This is also the reason why it's the most widely spoken language in the world. Not the language with the most native speakers (Mandarin Chinese) but by FAR the most widely spoken, thanks to worldwide business, the internet, etc.
English is the world language. It's a poor choice, but way too late to pick a better one now.

Its funny all of you guys are defending poor typists, because as soon as someone says something you do not like...its the first thing you attack.
I dont think is as much of not being able to spell, as much as it is people not realy being great typers or not careing enough to proof...why should they...we all know what they mean. |

That attitude's prevalent, certainly throughout the UK, and it's nothing to do with the internet or online gaming, it's because of crappy education systems for the last 30 years. It used to be that anything you handed in with poor spelling was automatically marked at zero, because if you can't be bothered to check the spelling/grammar/punctuation, how the hell is your actual work going to have any care taken over it.
That attitude died the death here back in the sixties, and the prevailing one now is "who cares, as long as we can understand what they meant." Trouble is ... often you can't.
133t? What the HELL does that mean?????

This debate comes up on every forum I have ever read, every now and then.
I agree with Baldour sometimes you cannot tell what people mean. Those people oftenseem to think it is your problem that you have no idea what they are trying to say rather than their responsibility to make themselves understood.
Correct of language has a lot of consequences beyond just making a point though as George Orwell noted way back when.
At school we all had to read this essay of his:
http://www.resort.com/~prime8/Orwell/patee.html
It still has a lot of relevence today and says a few things about how language is a thinking tool as much as a communication tool.
I doubt they teach it in schools these days.
On a lighter note. Theodin may be able to spell but punctuation is evidently not his thing:
"Where are the hero's and the brave, we live in a galaxy of fools and cowards"
What is that apostrophe doing in there?
Who are you to tell me to question authority? |
