Since I'm bored and waiting if something happens, I call out for each person to say their closest call from the old man with the reaper..
Mine was once upon a time when an IED went boom, and a piece of shrapnel hit me. Luckily it was just a scratch as all the piece did was a barely seeable cut to my cheek from which blood trickled at the pace of 1 drop of blood/minute. 5cm to the right and *OUCH*..

I got thrown from my horse through a solid wood fence at quite some pace lol Through my own fault, I should have guessed that my 1 tonne beast of an animal was going to have a hissy fit at a big scary Stick on the floor
Could have been worse, A metre or so further down the line the nice brakeable wooden fence was made of bricks
Broken arm, dislocated shoulder lol.

Hit by a car directly from behind while on my mountain bike. Driver was doing about 45mph. Went off the windscreen and over the top of the car. Bike ended up about 50m down the road, utterly destroyed.
I got away with a slightly swollen back and a reverse imprint of a BMW logo on my right buttock (really ).

I got knocked clean out playing football, fell from about 5-6ft (i can jump high) and landed on my back, almost broke the damn thing and was on a spinal board being rushed to a specialist hospital when i could finally talk, my first words were the only phone number i could remeber at the time

I stooped down to plug something in properly. Plug came apart in my hand.
Luckily enough, in stooping I had placed my left hand on my left knee, providing a convenient short-circuit bypassing my heart. The shock felt cool

Not really anything to speak of.
Someone threw a house brick into my face at close range once. It hit me square on the nose and bounced off. People kinda stopped trying to beat me up after that; what's the point if the loony doesn't even feel pain.
Got hit by a car, but got up and walked away, no injuries. And I once ripped my trousers on a rusty bench frame. When I got home an hour later to change my trousers, I found a six-inch long, inch-deep gash in my leg that I didn't know was there. ________________________________________________

completely trashed with friends, we rented a Rosalies with friends, first did some "grass skating" behind it on Saint Cloud park (very famous for its grass, now for our shoe marks).
Then we decided we could do better, went on the highway (paris ring....), and in a big slope down the rosalie dislocated. we bounced on a car (just bounced!), and we all 3, for some miracle reason, passed after the protection metal thing on the side of the road, falling 3-4m under
then we brought back the rosalie where we had rented it, and accused the guy to give us dangerous material
we got really close of ending in darwin award with that one

Got shot at while deliverying pizza in the wrong neighborhood when I was in college. Hauled a** back, called the people that ordered and made them come pick it up. Eating lead to deliver a large pepperoni pie - not a good trade.
Had to bail off of a moving train to narrowly miss being at the point of impact between the rail car I was on, and the dump truck that blew through the stop sign / rail crossing because he wasn't paying attention and/or didn't feel like stopping. Paying attention ftw!
Another time on the choo-choo, just happened to (pure luck) pick the right side of the rail car to ride on. Forklift operator (giant ones, tires taller than me - and I'm 6'1") set down some 70,000 + pound steel coils too close to the rail tracks. Front car of my train hit it and almost threw the car off the tracks. Had I been on the left side instead of the right side of the car, I would've been torn in half with pretty much no warning (was on a curve).
I've since stopped working at the steel mill and now have an office job in NYC. Not getting killed on the job due to someone else not paying attention > all!

Was in Warsaw once and not really paying quite as much attention as I should have been. Got jumped on a quiet street by a kid screaming in Polish for my wallet. Looked like he was off his head and he was waving a pistol around all over - so much so the gun went off and the bullet hit a wall. The kid seemed shocked and just froze, which was long enough to kick him in the nuts. The rest, as the old saying goes, writes itself.....

I had a particularly nasty strain of malaria in 1999 while on my ôgap yearö in Kenya. I had just started feeling a little unwell but decided to stay in a large town (Eldoret if you know the country) to watch the world cup rugby (France vs New Zealand I believe). If I had not stayed and had gone back to the small village I was on my placement through the ôgap yearö scheme I would have died. There was no easy way to evacuate someone rapidly as no airfields and my ôhomeö was effectively on a mountain! The day after the game I started to go into rapid decline and it was touch and go at first but thankfully I am still here to play EVE. \O/ _______

Being knocked off your back and hurled into the air by a fast moving vehicle is fun if you're a 10 year old child, it's almost as if the world is spinning in slow motion! Of course you then start bleeding uncontrollably from your right temple and the ambulance comes :(

Edited by: DeTox MinRohim on 15/09/2006 15:46:12 Probably 10 years ago (don't remember exactly), was driving peacefully a 3 lanes highway but the general traffic was a little faster than usual. I was on the left lane and the car in front of me hit the brakes too hard for me to slow down enough but I took the time to check and was about to go to the middle lane as there was enough space there... No big deal.
It was at this exact moment that I went over a stupid hole in the road that blew up my front right tire and I lost control. It was also happening exactly at the moment we were entering the Montreal tunnel so I went wee wee wee across middle and right lanes Bang on the right wall and bounce back wee wee wee across all the three lanes and traffic again and Bang to the left wall where my car finally decided that it had enough.... and stopped.
No injuries but the car was a lost... 4 cars bumped each other avoiding me and the worst happened was a bleedy nose for one of the bumping guy. The surprise was that at this speed and with all the cars around, I didn't create a major crash in that tunnel.
As if it wasn't enough... I was going to the airport to give my mother a ride to her home... I wasn't late...(garage gave me a replacement car 1 hour later) Although I'm not sure if the near-death experience is the accident... or that last part of the story when I told my mom...
"Ahem... I... hum... if you think the car looks different... well, it's normal..."

In Sydney, on the way back from Bondi, I was rollerblading down Oxford Street at pace. I was crossing a side-street, and a guy in a BMW swung off the main road at speed. I smacked into the front wheel hub, flew onto the bonnet (landing on my arm), twisted into the air and landed with my chest on the gutter on the other side.
Sunglasses still on, repacked my bag, threw a side-glance at the gigantic crease in the bonnet of the BMW, and said to the alarmed drive and bystanders, 'yeah, I'll be right mate' and skated off.
After about 500m, the adrenalin wore off, and I ended up limping/skating to the hospital for a series of X-Rays. Nothing broken, fractured fingers, brused ribs and a few stitches on one leg to show for it. Didn't really think about how 'close' it was until I got to the hospital.
Sidenote: I wasn't a n00b skater .. used to skate Killara <> Bondi pretty much every weekend, and City > Killara home from work 3-4 nights a week (tailing cars home ftw!)

We were back on our way home from the disco at 4 AM or so. My friend drove. I was sleeping a bit with my head at the window of the door. Suddendly I awaked from a noise, so I took my head away from that window and a moment later we rammed a tree on my side. All the glass came in and hit my neck and face on the right side. But I had luck that I waked up that moment before and took my head away from that door. Turned out that my driver had fallen asleep too and left the street in a curve. Well, his car was something for the scrap dealer, but we had no big injuries after all. Me the scratches from the security glass, that healed quite fast.
Had several more incidents on the street, like someone , who drove too fast with his car and trailer on the highway in the night, lost control and blocked half of the high-way. It must have happened just a few seconds before I reached that place. Nothing was secured, no lights, so I almost crashed into it, but could evade in the last moment due to some lucky light reflex that I noticed.
A few incidents more, where other drivers were testing my reactions, like a truck driver, who somehow didn't see that I was next to them and pushed me almost from the street. Two wheels on the green at 100 km/h and a trench and trees right next to you. Yey !
But also a few indidents in the first 2-3 years after getting my driving licence. I was driving at the limit as if I was immortal. Luckily I always reacted somehow right to avoid an accident and had also the big portion luck I needed. If I look back it's really frightening, how much luck I had. I'm thankful that nothing happen. So in the last 10 years I have driven a lot more carefully and not as if I play "Need for Speed". I know someone, who once was on the same school like me and just had his driving license a few months, when he killed a 13-year old girl with his car, who crossed the street with her horse, because he was too fast and reacted wrong / paniced. Not funny.

I had a few scrapes and close calls doing various sporting things like climbing and so on but the time I felt The Reaper standing next to me was when I got meningitis few years back. Woke up with a mild headache. No beers the night before so two aspirns and off to work. About 11.00 I'm thinking "Bummer. This is turning into a full on migrane" so I go home and take more painkillers and go to lie down. 16.00 I'm thinking "Err this could be meningitis" so I call my wife and tell her to come home. She calls a doctor who listens to a description of the symptoms and says "Would you like me to call you an ambulance or do you want to do it"
Thats a real "Oh ****! I'm too young to die." moment.
Its was shocking to see how quickly my condition deteriorated that day. What was odd was how calm I was about possibly dieing. Fortunately quick diagnosis and quick treatment along with generally being fit and well normally meant I made a full recovery and was back at work 6 weeks later. Scary stuff at the time though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was being super cool on my new Honda CBR 600 and doing stunts in a parking lot. Well, turns out I was going too fast for the length of the lot and hit the brakes hard to avoid the grass embankment at the end. Too hard. Did an endo and flew over the handlebars. I landed about 15ft up the hill and about 15ft from my bike. One of the guys with me said he thought bodies only bounced around like that in the movies.

hmm, let's see:
-pneumonia 5 times as a child.
-nearly struck by lightning (just hopped into a van when lightning hit the electrical tower 50ft away).
-motorcycle gearbox seized up while on the highway (luckily I had slowed a bit before it seized).
-nearly missed hitting a deer in the fast lane while towing a trailer (the car in front of me hit it and the deer flew past me as I passed).
-narrowly missed being involved in a 5 car multiple fatality accident (a truck wheel with suspension attached went past my windshield like that scene in twister, the car in front of me had a pickup truck land on top of it).
oh and my favorite: -narrowly missed being hit by some dude who jumped off the Eiffel Tower (I was standing about where he hit only 30 sec before). --------------
