Let's see if I can bring some sensibility into the thred.
There are a few types of frigate sized ships that a turret battleship can kill: 1. Stationary. 2. Stupid. (Moving straight for the battleship) 3. Slow and large. (Assault frigates that do not move perpendicular) A missile battleship can not kill an interceptor, but can kill the larger and slower frigates and assault frigates given a bit extra time.
In the cruiser category we find that a turret battleship is quite capable of killing: 1. Slow and weak (T1 cruisers that are far away or webbed and that do not travel perfectly perpendicular) 2. Stationary. Missile battleships, however, kill just about any cruiser sized rather more quickly, it is but a matter of getting the missiles to actually hit the target.
In the battleship category, well there's been enough threds about it, and suffice to say that tracking/hitting isn't much of an issue except for ACs and blasters. The only thing that, on large, matters in this category is time-to-damage and range. For this matter, one can rank the different weapon systems for long and short range (not taking the ships' other modules into account!) Long range worst to best: Drones Missiles Turrets
Short range worst to best: Very, very, difficult to say.
So, as far as missile drawbacks and advantages go, there's only a few ones that matter. Also note that while they do not do wrecking hits, they also do not do barely misses. Pros: Hit at any range for consistent and predictable damage Hit even at 0m range (a turret cannot, regardless of target size) Selectable (not reselectable) damage type Cons: Long time-to-damage
I cannot truely say that missiles do low damage, considering that they are such far reaching weapons that when compared to turrets the images given are always screwed because missiles reach much further with no damage deteroation. If I were to judge missiles, I'd say that they are rather fine in their current state. That turrets give greater reward due to tracking issues when these issues are overcome, I can only comment that this is fine. One cannot concievably argue that a weapon that is very easy to use at high efficiency should be competative with weapon systems that require vast amounts of skills to get to high efficiency.
Something that can be said about TURRETS, however, is that the way SENSOR BOOSTERS and TRACKING COMPUTERS work is not good for the game. A Sensor Booster increases both lock time AND range while a Tracking Computer boosts both long range hitting potency as well as short range. In essence, both of these modules widens the efficiency area of the ships they are fitted on in both directions, a long range battleship is given short range potency for free. This is wrong. Tracking Computers should give only optimal range and not tracking. A 240km optimal battleship with tracking nearly the same as a pulse armageddon, is wrong and bad for game balance. Getting close to a long range battleship should mean a tactical advantage, not only a necessety for yourself to do damage. - Three years old |
