Well if its Alienware, it probably costs 1000 dollars more than it should.

Teh Linky!
Its a good specced laptop, but as Dark Shikari says, its probably overpriced.
Also, with SLI, its liable to be hotter than the fires of hell on your knee.

* AMD TurionÖ 64 Mobile Processor (800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache) * Nvidia Mobile nForce 4 SLI Chipset * Starting at 1GB and up to 2GB of DDR SDRAM at 400MHz * 2 dedicated SO-DIMM slots for Dual-Channel DDR Memory
A64? Bad idea, needs a Core processor. Core 2s for lappies are coming in mere days.
Quote:
* Dual Graphics Cards 512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX SLI ENABLEDNVIDIA SLI and GeForce Go 7 Series * Connectivity o Video out: One DVI Connector o TV out: One S-Video out connector
Good graphics card, but two are ridiculous and unnecessary. A GTX is also overpriced, IMO.
Quote:
* Exclusive Alienware Design and Colour * Height: 3.55cm * Width: 47.63cm * Depth: 34.29cm * Weight: 6.80kg with battery
Holy crap that is the heaviest laptop I have seen in the past 10 years. At that weight you would be better off (and you'd save a few thousand bucks) buying a desktop.

1. Wait a few weeks for the Core 2s.
2. Don't get SLI.
3. Get 2 gigs of RAM and a 7200 RPM disk drive.
4. Get a laptop that weighs less than 7-8 pounds.

Monarch Computer: Desktops (notebooks coming soon) for about 50-60 dollars over build cost. Parts are at prices similar to that of Newegg, but unlike Newegg, they build it all for you.

Paper i tried the smae thing you are trying. Went looking for a performance laptop similer to my desktop.
Problem is normal laptop has fast processor but other specs are low. When u start putting in 2 graphics cards , extra ram, better cooling system, bla bla bla and the big monitor laptop gets really heavy. You want performance u have deal with the heavy weight. And the ridiculous price tag :) I couldnt find a light one, you would be lucky if you do.
BTW how is life oxford treating you?

Interesting, why no SLI, apart from the Power Consideration ?

1. Almost totally useless for all games (modern games are almost all CPU limited, though the Core 2 may change that). 2. Extremely expensive. 3. Takes up a huge amount of weight, space, and creates tons of heat.

Actually, I'd suggest not buying *ANY* new graphics solution (unless you've got no choice) until Vista comes out and we get some DirectX 10 hardware.
Anything you buy now will be outdated in a few months otherwise - and it makes babies cry when your 3 month old state of the art SLI kit is old-fashioned :(
I'm dieing for a PC upgrade but I can't upgrade anything without changing everything :(
Roll on Vista!

Wait, 4.2Ghz dual core? A Pentium 4?! How long does the battery last... 20 minutes?
You could get a faster machine for about 2000 dollars in the form of a Core 2.

Much better option, thought you were serious about a 4.2Ghz P4.
Mobile A64s are actually reasonable on power consumption

I had an Alienware, it was stolen after I had it for about 2 years (was ready to upgrade anyways) and I then got an XPS, which I currently use. I really like the XPS, and a friend of mine just got the latest XPS. I really like this computer, its light enough that I bring it to classes, but runs everything quite well. Overall I would reccomend an XPS, my Alienware was problem ridden and the battery was of extremely low quality.

I would recommend looking at sager notebooks for high performance desktop replacements. Their ODM is Clevo, like Alienware (used to be anyways) and are generally quite a bit cheaper. Also, their customer service is good (or at least used to be). --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

I actually made the dumb move of buying a gaming laptop, and from Alienware no less. Most expensive mistake I've made to date.
1. They get way too hot. Should be expected with the enclosed space.
2. If you are a power gamer you will see performance drop in the first couple of months due to prolonged periods of heat.
3. If you are not a power gamer, you probably don't need this beast.
4. The battery will become useless very quickly which makes it useless unless you have an outlet.

Yup, thats a very good computer. Seems a bit overpriced (not as much as the Alienware though), but its battery will probably last 2x longer than the Alienware and it'll run much cooler. Its also of course a lot lighter.

RIGHT NOW i'm using my Toshiba Equium m70 337 and it's fine for eve, plays other games great also like Rise of Legends and Darkstar one and even oblivion if you lower the settings. Cost? ú600. My desktop is for e-peenage, my laptop is for travel.

The Dell XPS is an awesome laptop (the M1710) but it is rediculously overpriced from dell.
I got mine from ebay, this guy Linkage is one of the best ebay sellers i have ever had the pleasure to deal with and the laptop is "buy it now" for ú1,200 the link i sent is the exact same laptop i bought, but i talked to him on the phone and got a bluetooth adapter and free delivery if i bought it today (give him a call, tell him you want to buy it now and would like to negotiate on teh price)
you will not be disspointed... ___________________________ ~Jiekon
