Edited by: Papermate on 21/09/2006 17:21:05 I think im going to get this computer then.
Mine cost ú2000 as opposed to 1,200 because i fully upgraded the processor and memory card which isnt upgraded on the ebay auction.
oh and if u ask why im getting such a powerful computer, its becaue this will be used as my "desktop" for the next 3-4 years at uni.

I got mine from ebay, this guy Linkage is one of the best ebay sellers i have ever had the pleasure to deal with and the laptop is "buy it now" for ú1,200 the link i sent is the exact same laptop i bought, but i talked to him on the phone and got a bluetooth adapter and free delivery if i bought it today (give him a call, tell him you want to buy it now and would like to negotiate on teh price)
you will not be disspointed...
Considering Dell own Alienware, I wouldn't expet the prices to drop anytime soon.
I've long decided if I am going to spend the money on a gaming rig, it will be a desktop system. The laptops just aren't worth the hassel.

Anything you buy now will be outdated in a few months otherwise - and it makes babies cry when your 3 month old state of the art SLI kit is old-fashioned :(
I'm dieing for a PC upgrade but I can't upgrade anything without changing everything :(
Roll on Vista!
Most newer GCs are coming Vista ready. My MSI 7900 GT is. Can't guarantee my processor is, but I would find it highly unlikely that MSoft will not incorporate slightly older stuff into Vista. As I tell my friends and my friends tell me, just go latest and greatest and Vista will give you nothing to worry about. MSoft will probably make more money on people upgrading to a better OS period than they would if they required completely new computers to do so.

You don't want SLi in your laptop for lots of reasons though. I'm sure the big ones have been listed.
Power consumption
Over-whelming heat
Weight
Redundancy
All SLi really does is transfer loads from 1 GC to between 2 GCs... sort of like Dual-Channel RAM. At least, this is my understanding of it. But, if you're planning on a 512Mb GC then SLi is rather moot anyways because you won't see any performance difference with 2 512Mb GCs... I can assume... for quite a while. 1 decent 256Mb PCI-E GC will run just about all games on high graphics settings plus a 256 7900 series runs [generally] $200 or so cheaper than a 512 and does it all without the heat generated by the 512.
edit - I'M LATE!! I'M LATE!! I'M LATE FOR THE DEBATE!! --- --- --- ---

211 pounds more for an extra gig? What a ripoff, wow.
It depends... if you want it to be more futureproof, its a good option. If you don't get the extra gig, make sure that the laptop has enough memory slots to add extra memory and still be dual channel (for example, my computer has 2x512MB, and if I added two more 512MB sticks, it would not be able to run faster than PC333).

SLI has nothing to do with the memory on the cards. What it does is allow two cards to process one screen by each rendering alternate frames. However, modern graphics cards are powerful enough that a second doesn't really do much in most cases, and having SLI on a laptop is a silly idea for the previously mentioned reasons.

1024MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x512) [Included in Price] 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024) [add ú211.50 or ú5/month1]
So in order to remain dual channel i would need to have 1x1024 and not 2x512mb right?
I will have to ask if that is possible

No, no, no. Once you determine the amount of ram you want in your PC, always break it down into two stick to take advantage of DC boards.

If your board supports 4 full-speed 512MB sticks, you will be able to upgrade. If it doesn't, you won't.
