Here's my simple recreation without all the effects. I tried my best to replicate the angle, but it was quite hard.

Now, Provence, Bantams are not the Frigate featured in the splash. They're in my render here, so compare if you wish. I gave them benefit of an exaggerated angle, but it still doesn't work.

Sorry it took so long, but I guess there's nothing 'quick' about 3D.

Thrawn, models may have changed, but they are still recognisable. Nowadays, when old model are changed, they are re-imagined, but with these models (as you can see from the station), they just gain complexity.
It is the Federation Navy Comet, the ship that you are looking for. Nothing compares to it in uniqueness, really.

I went ahead and took the liberty of buying a Bantam simply because I do not 3D model myself, but wanted some visual evidence of my own. Here, again, is the original box art.

Here's a shot of a Bantam at a distance, flying (basically; within a few degrees) in the same direction as those on the box art.

Here's a comparison shot of major components. (Note that I used MS Paint to simply cut and up-scale the original photo. There have been no enhancements done -- it is the same, blurry image).

3D rendering is useful, but I'd argue that photographic analysis is ultimately the more truthful science given that it deals with the facts as they exist, rather than the facts as we see them.

I was actually going to look at them in-game, but I would have been wrong in my analysis anyway. I didn't realise that they would look like that facing towards the camera.
I had it in my mind that the ship would obscure the exhaust.

I guess that makes more sense now as well, because the Bantams are flying to attack the Comets.
My thought process was like: engine trails = direction-of-travel

Looks more like a Federation Navy Comet to me. And that's definitely what it is -- you can tell based on the positioning of the engines, the wings, and the ridge running down the ship's spine. Very clear.



Lots of games do that, though. They dump a bunch of visuals -- screenshots, design art, rough models, etc. -- into the hands of the art department, and those are the guys who put together the box art. It's far less important that it be 100% reflective of the gameplay experienced by the player than something eye-catching.

And for the record, I still buy boxed copies of my games whenever possible.

Back when video games came in boxes... and way back when Eve was $50, I bought the aforementioned game and saved the box.

While I was out of town my wife redecorated my room and took a bunch of these boxes down to Kinkos or what ever and had them copied onto black matte.

Long story short, I have a copy of the original Eve Online box directly to the right of my computer.

And it is driving me crazy.

What is that fish shaped ship in the picture, and what type of station is it that the fish is shooting at?
