Back when video games came in boxes... and way back when Eve was $50, I bought the aforementioned game and saved the box.
While I was out of town my wife redecorated my room and took a bunch of these boxes down to Kinkos or what ever and had them copied onto black matte.
Long story short, I have a copy of the original Eve Online box directly to the right of my computer.
And it is driving me crazy.
What is that fish shaped ship in the picture, and what type of station is it that the fish is shooting at?
A link to the picture for to help.

I think the lia dia stations are that design. |

That is what it looks like, but those were not pilot-able at release either... It seems really odd that they would have an NPC ship on the cover...

I thought it looked Caldari but for some reason I remember it being Minmatar when I saw it in game so many years ago. That model has been replaced right? |

Looks more like a Federation Navy Comet to me. And that's definitely what it is -- you can tell based on the positioning of the engines, the wings, and the ridge running down the ship's spine. Very clear.

Lots of games do that, though. They dump a bunch of visuals -- screenshots, design art, rough models, etc. -- into the hands of the art department, and those are the guys who put together the box art. It's far less important that it be 100% reflective of the gameplay experienced by the player than something eye-catching.
And for the record, I still buy boxed copies of my games whenever possible. |

Flight of two Federation Navy Comets (flying with an Intaki logo?)
And what I think is two Imicus hulls. Although, it's way too blurry to tell properly.
However, there's no mistaking the Comets in the foreground. |

Wow, I couldn't even see them in the OP's blurry image. Those, I believe, are Bantams, rushing to defend the station. The give-away is the positioning of the engines relative to the profile. |

I had thought the same thing with a few various Frigate hulls, but it's not the Bantam.
These ships have quite distinct upper and lower thrusters. The ships in the picture have a more let's say 'complete' hull than what the Bantam does. And there seems to be no frontal bridge on these ships either.
While it's very hard to tell, it's easy to rule out some. Unless, of course, the 2003 model Bantam looks quite different in profile to what it does now. Then I'd be wrong. I'm not sure it's the Imicus, but yeah, personally I can't see it being the Bantam even from a extreme perspective view. |

Any idea where one still exists in game? I looked at a few logistics stations near Jita but couldn't find one shaped like that.

This is my biggest issue with the whole hunt. So many ships and models have changed how is it even possible to be sure?
I will say that if you look up a navy comet in game you can move the camera around so it looks exactly like that image.
Once I have this all figured out the next step, of course, is to recreate the image. Is the currently agreed upon Comet using Lasers? |

I still think they're Bantams. They're turned enough towards the camera that the protruding cockpit may be indistinguishable against the background of the remainder of the ship.
It's also entirely possible that -- as I pointed out earlier -- the image is a result of alpha or beta-level artwork and that those vessels never even existed in the game. But I think the Bantam is still the most likely culprit for three reasons: A) the placement of the main bank of engines, B) the presence of the wing structure on the starboard (image left) side of the hull (which would be wrong for the Imicus, but perfectly fits the Bantam, particularly if the other wing is masked from view by the hull), and C) the bulky lower portion of the ship protruding prominently. |

Ignoring the fact that... Nevermind.
Here's my simple recreation without all the effects. I tried my best to replicate the angle, but it was quite hard.
Here's the splash again.
Now, Provence, Bantams are not the Frigate featured in the splash. They're in my render here, so compare if you wish. I gave them benefit of an exaggerated angle, but it still doesn't work.
Sorry it took so long, but I guess there's nothing 'quick' about 3D.
Thrawn, models may have changed, but they are still recognisable. Nowadays, when old model are changed, they are re-imagined, but with these models (as you can see from the station), they just gain complexity. It is the Federation Navy Comet, the ship that you are looking for. Nothing compares to it in uniqueness, really. |

That looks really good, thanks for putting it together.
Some models do flat out change though, like the recent change to the Falcon/Blackbird. I know there were alot of models from 2003 that just simply don't exist any more. I still can't find the station in game. All the logistics stations use the "research station" model. |

Well, part of the reason it doesn't work is you have the Bantams facing away from us rather than towards us. Turning them 90 degrees to the right would position them in the direction the ships are flying in the original image.
For clarification's sake, the 'mystery ships' in the original box art are flying on a course roughly (though lot perfectly, they're turned a little more towards the camera) parallel to the large, protruding antennae array that juts out from the station. The Bantams in your rendering, on the other hand, are flying on a course to intersect that array, which highlights, rather than screens, their long bridge structure.
The give-away for this is the direction of the engine emission effects, which are totally illogical if the ships are turned the way you have them.
I'm not saying you should go to the trouble of re-rendering the image, but it's not accurate. |

I went ahead and took the liberty of buying a Bantam simply because I do not 3D model myself, but wanted some visual evidence of my own. Here, again, is the original box art.
Here's a shot of my Bantam at a distance, flying in (basically; within a few degrees) the same direction as those on the box art.
Here's a comparison shot of major components. (Note that I used MS Paint to simply cut and up-scale the original photo. There have been no enhancements done -- it is the same, blurry image).
3D rendering is useful, but I'd argue that photographic analysis is ultimately the more truthful science given that it deals with the facts as they exist, rather than the facts as we see them. |

I had it in my mind that the ship would obscure the exhaust.
Thank you, for clarifying that.
I guess that makes more sense now as well, because the Bantams are flying to attack the Comets. My thought process was like: engine trails = direction-of-travel

The joke Sol was attempting was any time any one asks .."what ship is that?" the answer is Templar, capital ship drone no matter what ship it actually is
It is similar to the "what song is that?" being Derude sandstorm in youtube
inside joke basically

While I was out of town my wife redecorated my room and took a bunch of these boxes down to Kinkos or what ever and had them copied onto black matte. Long story short, I have a copy of the original Eve Online box directly to the right of my computer. And it is driving me crazy. What is that fish shaped ship in the picture, and what type of station is it that the fish is shooting at? A link to the picture for to help. http://www.eve-tribune.com/2_29/Eve-OnlineHistory1_2.png
I remember that box, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was still doing publicity for CCP. |
