I realize that the issue of ship interiors has been something of a mild sticking point for a long time (I can remember reading the back-and-forths on whether or not there were even crews), but I was wondering if there are any concept art out there of the ships' interiors? Not anything necessarily vessel-specific, mind you, but just something to give a person an idea of theming?
And I know we get kind of a mild taste of racial interiors based on the walkable portions of the stations, but it's one small room, and I'm left wanting to see more (particularly of the bridges). Anyone know of any good repository for this kind of stuff that I could browse through (if it even exists)? |

Well, I guess I'm interested. I mean, do you think the Pod pilots never do anything in their ships even when in station? We clearly deign to get out of our pods and walk around, so I assume in safe environments, we tend to stretch our legs a little. What's more, I like to think that a holographic projection of us might actually walk the decks even while our physical minds and bodies stay locked within our claustrophobic little cocoon. |

This is something myself and CCP t0rfifrans have been talking about for some time now, some kind of ship inventory with a lot of techincal backstory and history of hulls in it.
What would you guys think of something like that? Would you be interested in buying some form of media completely devoted to technical backstory in EVE? Stuff like technical readouts, drawings, histories of hulls and their variants, that kind of thing?
Just wondering!

First, awesome.
Second, absolutely. Are you talking about something like an EVE version of this? Because, frankly, that was like my Bible for 4-5 years in Jr. High/High School.
I think anyone with even the mildest interest in the lore would want to know more about the ships... how they fly... what their crew compliments are... where they were first designed... what their interiors look like... what life aboard them is like. Yeah, I'd fork over $20-$30 for something like that. No question. |

Provence Tristram wrote:This picture makes me wonder about the larger ships even more. Do battleships come equipped with all kinds of quality of life amenities for the crew? IE, a Dominix comes with a full 'Ten Forward' style bar/strip club, natural-type (rocks, steam, plants, waterfalls) swimming pool, and meditation gardens; your average Apocalypse has a slave death arena, 'sins of the flesh' officer's club, and grand internal chapel/cathedral? The cathederal specifically was suggested as one of the primary reasons Caldari ships are so much smaller than Amarr (particularly at the BS level). The Caldari ships have crew ammeneties akin to those of a coffin hotel whereas the Amarr ship would have to have several chapels, cathederals...etc (because Amarr society is quite stratified and one can't expect a crewman from a Holder family to attend the same church as a freed slave (let alone the actual slaves aboard - who also need space to worship/be educated as to their proper place in the world).

They don't exist not even as a concept. EVE ships are just empty shells which look pretty ("design is the function") and so there is no need to figure what's inside or how do they work.
Of course, that job can be done retroactively, but personally I would not recommend it. "It looks cool" is quite incompatible with "it makes sense". I mean, how large would be the ammuniton magazines of ships firing artillery shells 1,400 mm wide and 16.2 milimeters long for a volume of 0.025 cubic meters? (I guess they fire them as killer frisbies...)

Before you go and the other devs go off and do it based on a tiny selection of yes's on this forum, I would suggest you put it to a bigger selection of fans at the next fan fest during a Eve auxiliary presentation towards the end of the ff, and judge it on that.
As for the suggestion, yes it would be a good addition to the Eve lore, so long as the effort doesn't pull dev staff from their main job. OR, CCP could get in contact with the guys who did this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Complete-Vehicles-Kerry-Dougherty/dp/1409334767/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1421679371&sr=1-3&keywords=star+wars+cross+sections
And base any book of CCP designed ships like they have done for the Star Wars ones. |

EVE Ships are not empty shells, far from that they have crews, there is fiction written about that.
I don't know how much time will I take, but I hope we'll be able to walk inside our ships and be in their bridges flying in space, the capsule concept can be reworked in many diferent ways, from the gameplay point of view and the fiction point of view, we can have both now, specially since we have Dust 514, soldiers immortal like the capsuleers, but without the need of a capsule.
For me the capsule is a restraint more than an advantage, something needed to make the gameplay work, for now.
There is a lot of people, that expect a lot more from CCP and this game in the years to come, for us EVE is limitless. |

The lore as it is now, you could not simply take away the capsule and have a full command bridge instead and it make sense. In the lore the capsule's primary function wasn't to give the pod pilot immortality, but was to provide the captain of a ship with the ability to directly control his his ship.
Let's look at an example: In a naval vessel, the captain gives the order to fire the guns, a crewman on the bridge radios the blokes at the guns and tells them the captain's orders, the blokes at the guns decide whether or not they are going to follow the captain's orders, and then the guns are finally fired if the blokes at the guns followed their orders (and they probably did). This whole process would take about 1 - 5 seconds, depending on where everyone is.
In a capsuleer's ship the captain thinks "fire the guns" and the guns fire immediately. The whole process takes less than second.
The advantage of the capsule is that it replaces the entire bridge crew and several other positions on the ship with the captain, while allowing him to think the ship into following his commands. Immortality was an after thought, added not by the Jovians, but by one of the empires.

Here is a little thought:
What if assets made in something license free like Blender (it is still free, right?) could be uploaded to CCP. Obviously there would need to be guides on making things .... but station and ship interiors can be purely cosmetic and for social reasons.
CCP just need to moderate the submitted assets to make sure they are in the same art direction, that there are no subliminal phallic images (yes boys, I know how you think!) and then position it for loading.
The key is making the right tools. Then it can be an afternoon's work once a week for some poor intern, who usually makes the tea and coffee and wants some game design work to put on their CV.
Edit: Capules - interiors are for station inspections to make sure your crew are doing a good job and to show off what a tight ship you run to other pilots.

You're absolutely right about that, I've readed those chronicles.
Wich does not forbid that we could have some new techonological advance that allowed us to control our ships outside the capsule.
Another option could be to be able to control and avatar, could be a holographic one, or a robot perhaps that would allow us to explore our ships and interact in a more personal way with our crews. EVE universe is always evolving. |

Yes.
Have you ever seen....... hmm you are younger.... OK back in the 1980s we were purchasing stuff like that for Star Trek and Star Wars. This was back when we have ONLY STTOS and only three installments of SW from George Lucas. But even then we knew that the "TIE" in TIE Fighter meant "Twin Ion Engine".
What I'm saying is, there's a market for that stuff and presently, as far as the media is concerned, there is no currently running Sci fi series on TV, so what you have is a huge void that can be filled. You might imagine that Eve players will get this stuff, but you also may find people getting into this stuff first and then becoming players (and the improvements you made to Industry will pay for itself at that point).

LOL, I was talking about the ingame assets. And there is nothing else than a few scattered concepts of some ships. It doesn't matter where anything is because it can't be targetted nor hit. Mess room? Ammunition magazines? Engines? Power plant? They don't exist. Nobody ever tought where would they be or how would they work.
This is why I say that EVE ships are just pretty shells. There is nothing inside.
Of course CCP Falcon & al can go and start putitng things inside, afterwards. Bu t he task is enormous and all in all... EVE ships are sjut empty shells. We can imagine them in any way we want, but most of them make no sense at all. Think about asymmetrical ships. Why would anyone bother having different engines of different sizes and powers at different distances from the CoG in asymmetric array? It's "cool", but it makes no sense.
And quite frankly, more than fictions about what there is (not) inside our ships, i'd rather buy (with money) a in-client replica of my appartment at the Greater Fool Bar. Or even the whole TGFB. Or the station where it is located in *my* imagination, not CCP's.
But hey, now I am slipping into the realm of avatar content, and this is a spaceships only game, will always be a spaceships only game and will never be anything else.

Hey CCP, as an idea if the cost of printing high quality glossy and making a book out of it doesn't match with the profits you could get from it, how about a completely optional DLC that we can pay for? What it would do is activate another tab or a button on the info page of each ship (or in ISIS) where we can see schematics and other RP data in a high res jpeg window in-game. Sort of like the ship viewer, but for the schematics data.
So those who have the DLC can have in-game access to this extra stuff, and those who don't aren't affected in their pew pew, mining, whatever. And you don't deal with printing costs, but may have to keep the schematics up to date. |

They've confirmed there are crews, and it makes perfect sense. Advanced as the human mind is, it can only control 1-2 high-order conscious tasks simultaneously. It can do loads more stuff unconsciously -- everything from sound filtering to regulating heartbeat -- but those are largely innate actions housed and operated by the reptilian brain, and have nothing to do with higher-order thinking.
The capsule gives pilots and inherent advantage because basic commands like "go here" and "shoot there" would be instantaneous. But the mind cannot simultaneously order the ship's internal drones to repair a broken water cleansing system on deck 4, react to blast damage on deck 8, maintain an ongoing conversation with a station agent, and plot an escape route. We're still human -- we're just plugged in.
Crews would be a necessary addition to vessels for the same reason capsuleers are -- because full automation has been found to be impractical, and the human element wholly necessary. You cannot simultaneously make the argument that crews are useless while at the same time propping up capsule tech as the end-all, be-all. Either people need to be involved or they are outdated and unnecessary, at which point we might as well sit planet-side and pilot all these vessels as drones.

Humans are still required as pilots. Thus, humans are likely still required for other on-ship tasks.
If there aren't crews, why are their windows; why aren't the ships literally just engine housings, platforms for the guns, and a tiny, protruding bulge containing the pod?
The ships are clearly -- CLEARLY -- designed with large crews in mind. You can't look at them and not see that. And my guess is that, even if we as pilots can't walk around during space flight, we can 'project' ourselves into the interior in non-combat situations as a hologram, perhaps even interacting with the environment.
I mean, can you imagine what a living hell it would be if we couldn't? You're talking about MONTHS of isolation inside our little egg shells, doing nothing, talking with nobody but the occasional station agent... nobody would do that. Why would they want to? I don't care if a capsuleer is "immortal" -- what kind of immortality would that be?
No... there are crews, there are in-ship environments, and we have a way of interacting with both. If we didn't, every single capsule pilot would have long ago gone totally bonkers. |

It wouldn't just seem less advantageous, you would absolutely be at a distinct disadvantage against any capsuleer ship if you weren't in the pod yourself. Any ship that doesn't have a capsuleer actively piloting it would have to be extremely lucky to survive against a capsuleer ship.
And Provence---
A capsuleer's mind can do all of those things you list, and all at the same time. That's what the capsuleer implants are for (not to mention the extra abilities given by the pirate and other special/skill implants). They expand the brain's (and nervous system's) capabilities immensely. A human equipped with just the basic capsuleer implants would far out-class even the smartest and best unaugmented human. Any implants that add to stats would only make the gap even wider.
The human capsuleer is necessary because human instinct and ingenuity in combat far outstrips that of a completely automated ship. However, every single other function on a ship can be done just as well - if not better - by automatons. Repairs, ammunition loading -- even the actual aiming of the guns is automatic. The capsuleer thinks "lock this" and it gets locked by the targeting computers. Then when the capsuleer mentally selects one of the locked targets and thinks "fire" the guns automatically swivel to track the target and fire.
You also have to remember that there are still lots of non-capsuleer ships around. Capsuleers are just the best of the best elite pilots. So the same Megathron hull can be made to be a capsuleer or non-capsuleer ship. That's why there are still windows and all that human crap. And in a capsuleer ship, there still needs to be room for automatons and redundant systems. That's why ships aren't just flying weapon platforms.
In MY EVE, the capsuleer is the only crew aboard a ship. The rest of the space is redundant automated systems and automatons.
When I finally do make an impact on this universe, it will reverberate across the entirety of it, and no one will be able to truthfully claim they don't know me.

Until then, I'll just sit quietly over here, minding my own business...

Well, thankfully your EVE isn't reality. There are crews... and I imagine yours is quite mutinous, considering that you pretend they don't exist.

(I guess they fire them as killer frisbies...) EVE Ships are not empty shells, far from that they have crews, there is fiction written about that. Sources: http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/short-stories/the-jovian-wet-grave/
http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/scientific-articles/ppcc-part-1-the-capsule-and-the-clone/ They've confirmed there are crews, and it makes perfect sense.
I not once said or implied that their aren't crews on the ships. Bridge crew and crew are not the same thing. Bridge crew are the officers and helmsmen, these according to the canon lore that CCP has given to us do not exist on any pod pilot's ship. Capsuleer ships would need crew to maintain the automatons, feed the crew, clean up after the crew, etc. The capsule allows the ship to function with a crew that is smaller than a skeleton crew, but most ships still do have a crew. |

100% with you here.
Provence Tristram wrote: If there aren't crews, why are their windows; why aren't the ships literally just engine housings, platforms for the guns, and a tiny, protruding bulge containing the pod?
Actually that's because most of the ships we fly weren't built with pods in mind, and would need a full crew to operate.
Capsuleer ships are retrofitted to be able to hold the pod.
Provence Tristram wrote: The ships are clearly -- CLEARLY -- designed with large crews in mind. You can't look at them and not see that. And my guess is that, even if we as pilots can't walk around during space flight, we can 'project' ourselves into the interior in non-combat situations as a hologram, perhaps even interacting with the environment.
Clearly the ships are designed with large crews in mind, but that's because 99% of the ships aren't piloted by pod pilots.
There is a very real possibility that holograms of the egger inside his ship are a thing.
Provence Tristram wrote: I mean, can you imagine what a living hell it would be if we couldn't? You're talking about MONTHS of isolation inside our little egg shells, doing nothing, talking with nobody but the occasional station agent... nobody would do that. Why would they want to? I don't care if a capsuleer is "immortal" -- what kind of immortality would that be?
Well, capsuleers are regularly on comms with each other. Also, there's a ton of money in being a capsuleer. Iirc .1 isk is enough to set up 4 generations for life all expenses paid.
Provence Tristram wrote: No... there are crews, there are in-ship environments, and we have a way of interacting with both. If we didn't, every single capsule pilot would have long ago gone totally bonkers.
Actually most canon lore has eggers being quite wonderfully insane. So that's a thing. |

Film CGI team + EVE assets + EVE lore + TV series writer + TV production company. Could it happen? Yes. Would it drive new members to the game through the roof? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not.
I've been saying in these forums for years that CCP has the potential to be more than a game company and change the way science fiction is consumed. Forever.
Imagine if say STTNG was more than just a show that we passively sit and watch. Imagine if the Battle at Wolf359 was not just "an episode" but in addition to being that and part of the show, there were players in that battle.
To this day, we would have people watching those reruns on TV or doing a "DVD/Netflix" marathon or something, but most of all, the chances for them to actually meet people who were in that battle. .Imagine the kid who was not even born before then and someone says to that kid "yeah I had a cruiser in that fight. Freakin' Borg cut a hole in my ship". Imagine being in that fleet, and being able to tell about it?
If this happened with Eve, nobody will be able to just sit and watch science fiction any more, or just read books. Those things won't go away and should not, but a "full spectrum media" of the genre could go a long way and Eve has the lore, and backstory (much of it player-involved) to meet this bill.
I hope it happens soon enough and with Eve, run by its international crew but still maintaining the Icelandic Viking edge. If an American game company picks up that ball and runs with it, it'll have another Wesley and be full of PC crap and would be too excruciating for anybody not on Ritalin (Like the rest of the world for example).

Either of those suggestions works for me, though I would definitely pay for a hard backed version. Things of interest;
- Deck layouts - Engine rooms - power core and capacitor ( we don't seem to fuel standard ships, an explanation on why would be nice ) - How ammo is fed and loaded from the cargo to weapons - sensors and instantaneous detection - Mining lasers and the technical side of things - How pods get into ships, and how ships are changed to facilitate a capsuleer - manufacturing in eve, everything from ammo to titans
Hope this gives you some ideas.

I'd also like to see some other things:
-Crew quarters. -'Typical' bridge layouts favored by the races. -Amenities considered standard based on race (IE Amarr on-ship chapels). -How hardpoints are able to accommodate vastly different weapon systems.

The crews die on a regular basis is because the game mechanics only have the pod pilot in his/her bath of goo escape. IF Eve was merged Star Wars IRL - a nice thought for the coming millennia - the ships will have multiple escape capsules life boats, for ship evacuations, and there would be no need for a pilot in a bath of goo. Crews have their escape pods, there is a crew survival percentage for every class, a little low for my taste, but EVE is a dangerous place for the people looking to live among the stars.
We as commanders of our ships can have effect here, we can give te order to evcuate ship whenever we want, that way we can save the lives of our crew. |

As for resources to cover the development- perhaps someone can go mumble something about 18 months to those folks who're playing -a free FPS that's funded by space ship pilots who subscribe to play eve-... on an old gen console. That uh, what's it called? Segabox or something? That, you know, some minor creative resources had to be diverted back to spaceship land? mmm?
Wouldn't that be awesome?! |

Just for some context, the artbooks I couldn't stop myself from buying online and in brick and mortar stores were about $35 - $45 each. I don't know the count, but I know they fill four of those 50 gallon plastic storage tubs. In-game items are being undersold, and on their own the concept is kind of empty... but paired with an occasion, I think it's a good mix.
The best thing about a physical book, though, is color reproduction. Print is handled in CMYK, while monitors use RGB. If you were to get really fancy about the digital images, ship them in CMYK for printing purposes.
One way to handle DRM gracefully is embed the name of a pilot onto the ships somehow, maybe the way you see pilot and crewchief names stencilled on military aircraft. Hopefully there's a way to automate this per order, but even if there isn't, you gotta work for that money somehow, and digital goods have infinite scalability.

Honestly,
I think it would be very good if we'd work out the technical details into a (buyable) format. It will help people who like to write novels for example, or fanfiction writers a lot! Not only that, but often idea's proposed in very popular series end up developped years later, and who knows... it might contribute :D |

I think it would be cool. No, SUPER COOL!
I personally would like to see the layouts of some of the industry ships (especially the larger ones). It would be pretty neat to see the network of internal mechanisms and systems like freight elevators, the Rorqual (in both travel and deployed mode), assembly lines, conveyor systems, resource processors, cargo and drone bays, etc. Maybe some of the usual modules one would find on such ships could be attached and we could see their inner workings as well.
It would also be pretty awesome to see cutaways with the crew (if any) in our ships performing their typical tasks of maintaining some of the internal systems, repairing damage, etc. Anything really.
Books, posters, downloadable media, wallpapers, 3D models, anything. You put it in the store and I will buy it.

On a serious note, yes. There's a geek & tech market you can (and should) dig into. People have been asking for that since '03, we've seen plenty of player created content over the years as well, from renders in the blender communities via fan fiction to technical background / element content in roleplaying groups.
Question isn't so much whether to market it, but how. Particularly since such user and community types tend to be rather high maintenance - it's not an eve thing, go fishing with franchises like Perry Rhodan or BattleTech for hints.
A major caveat you should however keep in mind is that the marketable value of immersive content is nill without added mythos. Simply put: hull history may sell a bit, but not for long, and not by much. Hull history tied in with storyline / dynamic content + extra's (things to do / share) is the proven better approach.
Funny thing, aside of that mishap with user designed ships once upon a time (remember the chaos and long aftermath), that was something which could have yielded a lot of useful adopt/share type of exposure. I'm surprised CCP hasn't hooked up with space agencies (private and public) considering some ships of recent years are right out of tech experiments from there :P Synergy folks .. explore it.
Incidentally, ever considered taking a page out of Jesuit notes? Get 'em young - paper model kits, cardboard cutouts, foldout postcards from outer space, explore the angles to give free & freely. Build up an experience base, then try commercial avenues. No matter the number of accounts subscribed, Torfi should not (again) forget that you're dealing with a niche market model. CCP is not a retail company. Again: remember the store drama over the years. You're not retail. Stay digital, enable players to make things real. It's the foundation right there either way.
On a less serious note, I don't doubt there's enough people who will buy good material not just for its own value, if it keeps the man away from game design and venture development. Too much damage was done.

OK.... So you've discussed this idea internally to death now? So the lore players love it. The PVP players see it as a waist of developer time (ignore please!) Sounds like to me you need to get this on a release schedule target if it is ever going to happen.
Many plus one's for this. It's real geek candy.

I've given this issue of commercial demand for extra media some thought. Here is the thing:
If players buy media content of any kind separately from the contract to play the game (subscription payment), how can that separation be maintained with respect to the in game media?
You can sell a physical model separately to the digital media. You can sell glossy posters, beer coolers, hats and other physical manifestations of media and yet keep them separate from in game media.
But lore and back story? I don't think so. It seems inherently doomed to undermine the in game media, and so corrupt the subscription deal that has already been made.
I'd counsel to avoid any discussion of trying to sell IP (images, lore etc) beyond the subscription deal. The deal is that you pay and you get, and what you get is ALL the lore, all the digital media. You get Eve, plain and simple, and that means all the IP to enjoy.
Having said that, there are many ways to leverage popular IP and to use it to generate margins in separate business streams. This is not a new thing, some publishers are better at it than others.
Much as I love you CCP guys, if we brutally honest, you suck at leveraging your IP. You are professional developers but amateur publishers.
You will know when you don't suck at publishing because you will start talking about leveraging IP instead of selling it.
Good luck, and god's speed. I have every faith you will get there in the end.
