You're already on the right track. Asking questions is one of the most important ways to learn the art of solo. Extensive reading also helps. As someone else said in this thread, get to know all the most common ships, study the common fits and tactics pilots will use in those ships so that you can react and stay out of that hurricanes medium neut range rather than only find out he has neuts once he's on top of you etc. Top rated fits on battleclinic and the ship fittings section of the failheap challenge website are good places to study the different ways in which ships are usually fit.
But of course the most important way is to just get out there and do it. Stick to tech 1 insurable ships until you are more experienced (read: a vagabond is not an "i-win" button). But what sort of tech 1 ship you fly is completely up to you. Frigates, cruisers, bc's, bs's. Any of them are fine, just choose the one that most interests you and is in your price range. When I say in your price range I mean that you should be able to buy at least a handful of them at once and it shouldn't take you too long to make back that isk. Solo pvp is very expensive, you will lose LOTS of ships, sometimes with very little kills to show for it and you have to expect to lose hulls over and over again.
Ignore all the nay-sayers. People who try to tell you frigates suck, dont learn in them are wrong. And they're just as wrong as someeone who says you MUST learn in frigates. That said, the bigger the ship the more costly the loss and the harder it is to avoid gatecamps, so frigates definitely have their advantages if that is what interests you.
Lastly, have fun and learn from your mistakes. Try not to get disheartened about losing lots of ships and after every loss question what happened during the fight, what you did wrong and what you could've done differently or better to improve the outcome. And then try to apply what you have learnt to your next fight.
Good luck. Latest PVP Video: Laktos Intolerance 2
