Highsec has it's own special rules and some of them are a bit weird.
Best to just take all that out of the equation while you're learning the basics of ship combat.
In lowsec you'll find many that will honor a 1v1 (if you explicitly ask before engaging). Several corps, such as my own, require their members to honor agreed 1v1s. This.
Although I had my first fair fights in highsec with duels some months into the game, but today I know that I was lucky fighting like minded players. The game works very similar to real warfare in certain aspects, where the better intel can decide a fight before it actually starts.
I'm my own NPC alt.

If you find yourself in a fair fight... you've done it wrong.

Hemoroids wrote:On several occasions I have both been invited and have invited other players to duel. I don't see the point of having a duel if the opponents fleet or corp members can just jump in and help with armor and shield reppers. I really enjoy the the game but pvp play seems to be open for improvement. Is there any way to ensure a fair duel or do I just need to adapt my style of play?
send him a convo and state that you are willing to duel him if he has the balls to accept your fleet invite. If he does accept, fleet warp to a bookmark where your friends are already waiting and then laugh at him. This is eve.
If you want to be "fair", do what I mentioned above but don't have any friends waiting. |

I think that the bottom line is that the majority of pilots who engage in poor sportsmanlike conduct simply can't stand on their own two feet when it comes to pvp. We know it's true and they know it's true. Very much the same as the gang mentality one finds in the real world. Human nature can't be changed so all one can do is go on to be the best you can be and expect losses at the hands of lesser men. In the mean time CCP is aware of this issue as this shortcoming is frequently complained about. Here's to hoping the future will let true PVPers shine. |

Join RvB. They try to provide fair casual PvP. They have a channel set aside for solo PvP, most people there actually want a good fight, so they don't typically cheat. Every now and then you might find someone with a Command Ship alt, but that is not technically allowed, just hard to enforce. |

Also, rarely you will get duel invite from a player that doesnt know, that he can win (in any way possible).
So if you got invited to duel, it means you already lost, since attacker either scanned you and knows he can beat you or he knows that his alt in Nestor can keep him alive long enough..
Ergo: dont use feature, its broken like whole empire pvp is broken. What was the last time you saw a PvP movie that happened in empire? |

What about disbanding the fleet when the duel starts, or not having the possibility to challenge someone to a duel while in a fleet...
That could be doable by CCP, right? |

Just using common sense is already in game and doable. Just because some people don't use common sense (not meaning you of course), doesn't mean the game is somehow broken or needs to be "fixed".

Though I'd have to say if they fixed station games then the duels on stations would be a lot better off.
Guys offering duels in cruisers only to swap out for a vindicator from a bowhead after the other guy aggresses...
Or the fact that interfering with a limited engagement in no way transfers that engagement or weapons timers to yourself...
If repping a guy with a weapons timer kept the neutral logi guys from insta docking you bet they would be less willing to actually risk their logistics cruisers or nestors.
But the ability to switch ships in space while being in a duel is the worst part. Not that you shouldn't be able to switch ships while being engaged or shot at under normal situations like fleet fights or wars, but being able to while being in a duel is what is broken. |
