The 9CG battle from earlier this year which some others have mentioned had at one point, more people in system fighting each other than there were in Jita.
I believe it was over 400, probably closer to 450.

It consisted of a 100 man SA fleet (Stain Alliance before the in-game alliance abilities) and another big corp (I forget the name) that had a fleet of 75 ships. These two fleets went up against a fleet of ~200 CA (Curse Alliance) ships.
What happened was the 100 man SA fleet faked like it would enter VOL- one way, but then switched and took a fast round about way via insta jumps. The other fleet then took up position where the SA fleet left. CA then put their 200 man fleet at the gate where they expected SA to jump in from. However, it was timed that both fleets entered VOL- from different directions at the same time (thanks to teamspeak and good planning). The effect was that the CA fleet suddenly had two groups of targets at two different ranges and eventually lost after a hard fought battle.
So that was about a ~400 ship fight back when CA and SA where still around and at war... (i.e.: old history for most people).
Not the biggest ever, but pretty damn big for the time and pretty sweet considering the tactical maneuvers.
(Note, the system the fight too place in might not be actually be VOL, I don't remember after all this time. It was a system in curse though)
I was on the Curse side, and the battle was in HWL, not VOL. I think the other party that fought next to SA was Atuk. Atuk jumped in from VOL and SA took the long way. It was a long and hard battle in which Curse took the most losses, but I can remember something about invisible fleets. The fleet that was not at the gate was invisible for the Curse forces around the gate or something like that. But at least the node stayed up :)
For me the biggest en most memorial battles where the ones in which Supremacy + friends invaded JQA/3FA territory in jan 2005. Several battles that lasted for hours where fought in VV-V, 250+ people participating and hundreds of ships killed (pilots from both sides grabbed new ships as soon as they could and rejoined the battle, several JQA pilots lost 4 or 5+ ships during the 4 hour long battle.).

a south op with IRON just a normal gang of battle ships flying around stain and we ran into a camp of 300 angry miners, then we found that G(now adays known as D2) was only a few jump out with a similar force. IRON and G(d2) both had about 100 each and we jumped in to a system with about 300 stain empire. IRON jumped on on the camp and where inside like 10 bubbles of all sizes, and G came from the other direction, warping on top of the snipers. It did not all go as planed but nothing ever does in eve. It was an exciting battle even though we lost, but i was the covert so i was kinda bored for the 30-50 min that this battle went on for.
This dosent count all the one sided battles i was on taking out POSs and Station bombardment, where one side would have around 200 people.

awwwww feel the lurv.... c'mon give us a hug
dont spose the 30+ bubbles on each gate and 600+ hossies had anything to do with it now did it? Or is your vitriolic reply down to your rears being handed to you a la plate a wee while later.....

hugging the ec- gate in ewok with 200 pilots, begging the fcs "let us jump! let us jump" the small group in ec- killed 1 bubble and 2 new appeared instantly ^^ no jump for us :( but the aftermath, after bob left and ascn hold the system, was *yummy*

Large battles (100+) in and around AZN (vs ASCN). Pure Blind, Tribute, Vale of Silent (vs FoE, vs FE, vs FE + .5), Deklein (retaking the IRON Outpost from Bob, XZH (vs Goons), Fade, Cloud Ring (vs Mass, friends and Mercs, later SE then SA). Outer Ring, Fountain, Delve (vs. Bob)

Originally by: Audri Fisher 600. BoB's infamous EC camp. warping around taking potshots at them with my corp. 3 guys lasted all week.
Yep, that was by far the biggest fight I've ever been in.
My fleet (70 odd ships) jumped into EC from gm and lagged out. Most of them CTD'd.
I was able to load and see the MASSIVE gate camp, and I was somehow able to get my inty out of the bubbles and warp to a safe spot. It took 15 minutes from the time I hit warp to the time I started warping. No one could see or lock me (otherwise, I'd have been space dust)
I then made a stupid mistake and warped back to a different gate to take a look. Didn't remember that bubbles pull you in even at 100km. Instantly my inty was space dust.
The biggest fight I've actually fired a shot in was when IRON took Dek back from NFC. (I was not in iron at the time, but I was in an allied corp)
We rolled a 80 man fleet into VFK against at least 140 pilots. I'm not really sure I can say who won. It was an incredible fight though. Much give and take. And NFC kept respawning at the station and warping back into the fight.
I saw 10 or more kill mails for the same 5 guys. All in like 2 hours. It was awesome.
I got nuked by a carrier's fighters. I was in a dictor. (don't ask me why I took a dictor to a fleet battle) Boy did I **** off the fleet commander by droping bubbles all over the battle.

The final CA vs. SA+ATUK fight in HLW-HP - I was in a 200 man gang and I remember local peaked at 413 (everyone pvping or trying too) before it got so lagged I logged out.

I was also on the CA side it was the biggest pvp that i remember but defently not the most fun. I think it also proved that the CA did not have a dev lag machine as the lag hurt us more then them. As for the invisable fleets, the warp in fleet would lag more but see the whole grid whereas the CA fleet were only seeing the forces they had already loaded so random ships were exploding from unkown forces :p

Yes, I also recall this fight I was also on the CA side. CA might have taken the most losses but if I recall CA was still on the gate at the end of the fight. Although Stain had 2 forces(ATUK-traders) one on the flank and one in the system next door CA had the intel and we decided to fight it out.
CA - figured we would have the lag advantage over people warping/jumping in. ATUK - was CA untill they turned on us and joined Stain.
This was 2/3 years ago so I can't remember exactly everything, but no war has topped the Stain/CA wars and never will. The server then could handle bigger Fleets then the server can ever handle again.

I see other LV have already posted but I think the biggest I've been in was the final siege on C-J6 against RA.
I believe local topped 350, all of which participated. I think 200 of which were in the LV gang.
It wasn't even fun. Most lag in any game I've ever seen. Capital ships were there too. ___________ Auction: Corpum Gear

skrypt i lost my CS ship to lag in that fight at freindly pos, local actually peaked 410. Activating my hardeners lagged me out and emergency warped me, and then RA had scan probes all over the pos, and killed me before i could even log back in, with a dread.. The shady part was they did it so fast they got me before I went invisible since i had no agro timer, we had all just jumped in. But that battle for me was the largest hate i mean lagfest i think ive been in.

Don't know what was the biggest, been in loads with 400+ in system and they're not usually the best.
What I do know for sure is that the ability to have very large fleet battles has been ever declining along with server performance for about two years now

350 people, QDF (Querious locals) vs CA in HED long long ago on the castor build and before FIX had formed. Not long ago i read someone writing about it in local, so i guess it was quite a historical event, althaught Querious locals reatreated after 3 minutes and lost 50 ships or so in that time.

The biggest fight I was part of was in Metropolis... We were mining... 1 hauler, 2 barges, and me in a figter. I was in a frigate, and 3 NPC pirates jumped in. Local peaked at 10. I've killed them all (the NPC pirates)....

That said that wasent the bigest fleet battle just the most rememberable
I would think the most memorable would be 4 GMs with maxxed skills in DED battleships warping on top of a gate camp and smartbombing the players.
