I would like to hear where everyone came up with their names. There's a lot of interesting ones out there and I'm curious.
Personally, anyone who is familiar with D&D or the recent D&D games from Bioware might recognize "Asimir" (pronounced A-sim-ear) as being the name for a race of people who were born of one angelic parent. Basically a half angel, half human.
The Kurdugal part is completely made up. So cmon, share.

Erty is the nick I use everywhere :)
When I was little (6 years or something) I used to just smash the keyboard when I wanted a name for a save or a character in a game and stuff like that.
And...well, once "Erty" came up. And I liked it, so I started to use it.
So from the beginning it's just an "asdf" nick, but now I've used it for so long and I really like it. I would never change nick.
This is my signature. |

From the Isacc Asimov Foundation Series:
A bit of a machiavellian politician type
Characters: Hardin, Salvor (8FE-) First Mayor of Terminus City. Famous for several quotations, including:
* "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."
* "It pays to be obvious, especially if you have a reputation for subtlety."
* "Nothing has to be true, but everything has to sound true."
* "Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what is right!"
* "A fire-eater must eat fire even if he has to kindle it himself."
* "An atom-blaster is a good weapon, but it can point both ways."
* "To succeed, planning alone is insufficient. One must improvise as well."
* "Only a lie that wasn't ashamed of itself could possibly succeed."
Set up the Priesthood to control the Four Kingdoms and eventually forced them to sign non-aggression treaties with the First Foundation.
Survived two Seldon Crises and was the only person to be in attendance at two appearances of Hari Seldon in the Time Vault.

Therefore I'm either adslrizla (FPS games) or agrizla (strategy games) - both of which reflect my prior connections with adslguide.org.uk (I did the "how it works" section a couple of years ago - and I keep meaning to update it).

My character's name is from an archer character I used to play in a few other MMORPG's. I had originally had a character named Archon...short, simple, and to the point. A server side loss in Asheron's Call caused my character to be unselectable so I made another character with almost the same name. It turned out to fit better than the old one, it's now the one I use for my main character in these types of games.

That was my name on the pre-release forums and the name I use for just about any other game. It just didn't seem to fit for Eve though.

And hey, Blue IS my favorite color so... It fit well.
And I do not use BlueElite in EVE because my first ORIGINAl character was BlueElite, i made WarElf an alt, and decided to keep WarElf as a main character, then last week deleted BlueElite .

My Unkle was called Guilch, and I forget the name my sister took on. I was Zezman, the rogue mage guy. Guilch was the warrior/leader, and I think my sister played a Cleric/Princess type.

[76]
The leanhaun shee or lianhaun shee is a fairy mistress of dreadful power, for she seeks the love and dominion of mortal men--if they refuse her, she is their slave and if they consent they are hers.
Most men find that they cannot refuse her. Only one lianhaun shee exists and she is more a force than a woman.
Each fairy woman who loves becomes one with her; and for the mortal man who longs for her she is the one and only.
She does not play with emotions; all who love her, live for her and their desire for her frequently destroys them. The more suffering she inflicts the dearer she becomes to them. The more they desire her the more she eludes them.
An impatient mistress, she creates such desire in her lovers that they will overcome all obstacles to embrace her. She never yields to them in mortal lands, but insists on their meeting in Tir-na-n-Og, so that men must pass through death to enjoy her.
On teamspeak they can call me by my real name or simply Lian, althugh its fun to hear them struggle with it.

My name came from Counter Strike.
I used to call my self at the time Viper but when I looked around to many people had that name so I wanted to keep my identity but be unique. So I changed the spelling to VYPER. Where the pit bit came from was my Clan days I used to be pretty good and we got up in the ranks in a few of the leagues we played in, in the end the guys used to call me the pit of despair. Don’t remember how it came about but it did. It used to happen if our team got taken out I would normally be left alone and I would manage to kill the enemies. From there I adopted the PIT side of what they called me and so I ended up with VYPERPIT.
This was kind of and in clan joke but soon I grew to like it so If you ever see a VYPERPIT in any game it will more then likely be me.
What can I say I rule and I wuv my name.

There¦s also a blackmetal band called Naglfar but that¦s not where I got the name from.

Gan Ning was a chinese pirate who lived from AD 175 - 218.
In his youth, Gan Ning did not have any rules and used his skills for assassination and plunder. He originally led a group of youths and terrorized small towns. In his twenties however, Gan Ning started reading the classical literature from Zhou dynasty intellectuals and as such sought to become a military general.
Evenyually he did become one of Sun Quans most feared Generals in the Wu Dynasty. If you need to know more about the whole Three Kingdoms period visit http://www.threekingdoms.com.
Also as some may have noticed he and many other generals of that era are featured in Koei's multi million franchise Dynasty Warriors.
I have modelled myself on this character and decided that I would become a pirate as soon as I bought EVE. |

When I was younger I used to drink a fair bit of beer. I could drink all night without getting too drunk or bloated. Because of this some of my friends gave me the nickname of bottomless beer-gut butler (Butler is my real life surname).
After getting sick of trying to think of names to use for games, I brought out my old nickname and took the first 2 letters of each word which left me with bobegubu. I use this name for all games I play so if you see this name in another game, there's a good chance that's me :)

Personally, anyone who is familiar with D&D or the recent D&D games from Bioware might recognize "Asimir" (pronounced A-sim-ear) as being the name for a race of people who were born of one angelic parent. Basically a half angel, half human.
Do you know Gullstaff sorcerer of light?

As for ths char, I'm an overall fan of wolves and werewolf part of the horror genre so I had to have loup in my name somewhere. To me it sorta sounded like a mix of wolf and dragon so I went with it lol.

Edited by: Jade Constantine on 27/10/2003 16:05:45
I'm glad someone is going around resurrecting all these interesting threads that I missed first time around.
Jade Constantine eh?
Well, I did actually had a fairly complete character background worked out before generation ... my rl friends and I in Jericho had decided the type of corporation we wanted and the type of goals we were going after, and so as CEO, Jade had to fill a couple of important roles as spokesperson for a mercenary psychological warefare and public relations corp.
"Jade" is I think, a working name, because in terms of character background she was a bond-slave-courtesan for the Amarri empire, Sarum family, and a very accomplished practioner of the oldest profession. Some of my old background stuff tells of her rising up the ranks of Amarr servitor class for spying and intel gathering and finally winning freedom and a stake in the great game of politics by playing off unnamed personages in the Amarri royal houses.
I admit I was influenced by the wonderful: Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey Which is the first book in a rather wonderful trilogy that mingles interesting sensual perspectives with high intrigue and lovingly described decadence.
I did my bit for carrying this off with the selection of social skills, high charisma, and Amarr ship technology, but I admit I may have got a bit too carried away with politics and the high profile PR game recently to play too much of the covert stuff.
"Constantine" well, its always been a favourite name of mine, both for the amazing Hellblazer comic and cameos from Lady Johanna Constantine and of course the relevence to earlier british history and Arthurian mythology.
Here is another excellent Johanna Constantine piccy here
The idea was to suggest that Jade had an extended family and connection to several old families in the heirachy of Eve.
Plus of course, it just sounds cool ;) Anyhow, months and months down the line I am still quite happy with the name and the portrait. And its nice to see that Jericho Fraction achieved quite a lot of the goals we set ourselves as raw noobs ;)
Still, lots left to play for.
(Hope that was interesting to some)
Love and peace

I made up the name on the Anandtech forums (a technical forum about PC technology etc) and at the time had been watching lots of anime. So I came up with an anime sounding first name--Techie.
The Zero comes from my influences LARP Vampire with a cool guy named FATHER ZERO---who in turn makes a reference to what is known as a PATIENT ZERO---who is the first person to have an infectious contagion. The Alpha of an Omega, Father Zero was our leader.
It was the same name I had in Beta---but Techie was more of M3G4's crafter and Station Manager when we had one of the player owned stations.
Now in retail Techie Zero really does not do as much crafting etc that his Beta version did, but I stuck with the name. EVE-I.com~THE Info source |

Farooq is the root of my in-law's last name and is of Arabic origins.
I like using a first and a last name on the off chance that I want to create multiple characters, it's easier for folks to realize that I'm both Naz Farooq and Rafi Farooq, for example. Sure, everyone supports saving Einstein's brain, but when you put it in the body of a Great White Shark, suddenly you've "gone too far". |

My most loved characters have been: Mundungu I (who knows Magic the Gatering will recognise this name easily), in Ultima Online, Drachenfels server. Mapi Nyo (Mapi is my wife's nick irl ), in Everquest, Vallon Zek (pvp) server.

Yea, followed by their D&D counter parts the Tieflings, or half demons. I just wanted to keep the phonetics the same. You can see I changed the spelling a bit.
And, I actually remembered where "Kurdugal" part came from. I was trying to think of a kind of naval/admiralish type name. Of course the name Admiral Degaul came to mind from Starcraft: Broodwar. I think the "Kur" adds a bit of Minmatar/Eveishness.

The original form was misleading cos Zegna fonetical is Zenja - i wanted it to look more cool so I replaced "j" with "y". And Here I am, Ermen's extra long Bio has given him deeper meaning. I am also called Ermen or [my favourite] R-men.

Kunming is a lake city in south China (If the city takes its name from the lake or the lake takes its name from the city, that I don't know)
We had quite an interesting chat, the other day, about movie and game producers who get the names they need from China and Africa, since they r the places that have the most "names" and the most unknown ones...
For ex. in Dune 2 the name Ordos comes from a river in China...
Interesting topic though, congrats Asimir for the little change of flavor on the forums.

Edited by: Scal Hart on 28/10/2003 09:46:45 In the beta I was Scal and when I finally got the retail this fall I just added the Hart to it.
Scal is short for Scalio, which is a misreading of my real surname and I've been using Scal or Scalio on the internet ever since, so if you run into that name somewhere it just might be me ;)
Hart is just something added, tho it has some connection to a nickname my grandfather has given me. And I like to think that you can either understand it as Heart or Hard.
Overall I'm not very pleased with the name, but I'm so far into this char that it's too late to complain now.

There are a number of places my name could have come from however I took it from what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest FPS's ever - Marathon. The second game in the Marathon series was called Marathon 2: Durandal, Durandal being the unstable AI from the first game that ends up helping you out and becoming a bit of a hero in the second game.
For those that have no idea what I am talking about think Halo only much better and a long time ago....M2:Dur blew even Doom and Doom II away IMHO

I usually selected names from novels and such before... But when I started out in EVE, I wanted my name to be something special, not just taken from someone else. I wanted a name that would sound like the way I wanted my character to be. A bit of a jester, a bit of a thief, but with honour in that. Just when I was about to give up on finding a name, my look came to rest on the box that I collect all the tidbits in that don't have a real place to put them to. And somewhere in that junk there was my old tinwhistle. So the name was born...

[157]
Edited by: Alynthir on 28/10/2003 14:26:40 Alynthir was an elven assassin I played in an old D&D campaign a while back. I played him for about four years. He had one of the most complete back stories of any character I ever played, which has helped as I've made him the center of a series of three books that my friends all tell me I should try to have published.
Born of noble blood and inducted into an elite group of rangers, Alynthir betrayed the code of the Order by killing a fellow student during training. The student had been suspected of the r@pe of another classmate. Alynthir taking the law into his own hands earned him banishment from the Order and stripped of his noble title.
Turning his back on his heritage, Alynthir eventually fell in with a group of mercenaries. Through them he was recruited by an elite society of killers and, from that point forward, was known only by the name 'Darklight'.
Alynthir's personal journey of self-discovery and subsequent redemption was what filled four years of D&D gaming and the three books I felt a need to write to end his story.
Deadly with a bow or a pair of short swords, Al was one mean bastard.
And now he flies a space battleship.
The Alynthir of EVE is an ex-Amarrian Naval Captian. He distinguised himself in numerous Minmatar border conflicts, eventually earning an Armageddon battleship command. However, in his first major battleship action, he was ordered by the fleet admiral to open fire on a Minmatar civilian transport filled with women and children.
He refused the order, lost his command and was demoted. Disgusted with the circumstances of his demotion, Alynthir retired from military service and took a job as the Chief Tactical Officer of Nexus Enterprises, a post he holds to this day. _____ CLS Civil Affairs Bureau

i have always loved your sig. the arrow's a nice touch. subtlety is so overrated sometimes :D
I was "online" meaning local BBSes at 300 baud in the late 80s. I had read a book and some short stories that totally blew my mind by this chap called Gibson... so i quite cleverly began calling myself Chrome (never mind the "real" one's a she). Also things like technomancer and cybermage, but chrome was the most "orignal" and i was the only one i saw thru the early 90s.
Well THAT changed fast. I have no real consistent "online identity" now, just make up whatever seems appropriate for the setting. For BH, here, since naming is done after you make the character, i was playing with the various appearance options for Beta when i had just gotten in (had already applied to Oracle) and got this evil clown lookin' dude, but couldn't think up a non-generic name (Insane Clown Posse? oops... Harley Quinn? Darnit...). Was thinking he looked like he got kicked out of the evil-clown convention for being too rough-trade, and here I am :D

i loved those games. The game manual even had the origins of the usage of the word in its modern form. The first one, well you don't know that Durandal's losing it, but you sure find out. Atmospherically for creep-out-rising-panic factor it's right up there with the System Shocks IMHO.

Bobby Wilson

[166]
William Gibson wrote a number of books often credited as "founding" the cyberpunk genre. He coined a number of terms we commonly use for electronics, gaming and especially internet references.
He had an insult in his books, to be called a "Wilson", which is basically a total screw-up. He explains (just once) in a book called Count Zero that the name comes from a real person named Bodine Wilson who had been a very skilled, but very unlucky hacker who had experienced braindeath a number of times from hitting heavy-duty electronic security whilst at his chosen trade. I enjoyed the reference as it is both self-deprecating, and yet so incredibly obscure that I can be sure only 1 person in a 1000 know the original source.
Sadly "Wilson" was taken when I got to EVE, so I wrote down what I *thought* had been the proper name from the books. Recently double-checked and discovered my mistake

Where to begin..
My first online persona was "ShadowFax", which is the God of Horses in the LoTR series. Some bastard took it a couple times though, so I decided to use a new nick. Kaclain Rider, which began as "Cackling Rider" but slowly evolved to Kaclain, don't know how. That was back in a mech game called Starsiege. When I joined in eve, I then took the name FireFox, which I continue to use, mostly because it sounded cool at the time. I later used Sedsiss, which was a variation of a name of a Cybrid warform in Starsiege that liked to eat humans.

My name comes from two sources, I wanted to be a business man who precariously balanced himself on the lines of legality. I selected underhanded business practices as my specialty on character completion. So as you might tell i was aiming to play a Talon Karrde type char from Star Wars, who i believe first apeared in the timothy zahn trilogy begining with heir to the empire. Rawne comes from my co-worker who was reading a sci-fi novel at the time, it seemed to look good together so i went with it, have to say i'm quite pleased with my name and have gotten several compliments in local about it.
