CCP can post whatever they like here, but I'm going to place my isk on it not going to happen, ever.
Hell, planetary flight "in a release somewhere after the last revelation expansion". That last revelation (oh what a good name to dig a deep hole with for yourself CCP, good going on that choice), is slated for about a year from now, ergo, not to be expected earlier then q2 2008, ergo, planetary flight not before 2009.
Let's do the subject again then ok ? My trust in CCP's long term planning hasn't exactly been raised in the last three years, let alone that I've got much belief in their planning for the future three.

Outside the ship?
It would seem that after faction warfare, the next big revision will be planetary colonization (doubt planetary flight any time soon) and walking around a station.

For those wishing to have a FPS environment in an EVE setting, I know of at least 2 mods being worked on, one for Half-life, the other for Unreal Tournament. Both are currently in the planning stages and have a ways to go yet. I am looking forward to both projects, the teams involved are very positive on 'getting things right', and ensuring they compliment the back story, nor re-write it.

The ability to move around outside of your ship and pod would increase the depth of gameplay possibilities by about a zillion fold.
I want to run a seedy ring of casinos and high-end gentlemen's clubs while bounty hunting in far-flung bars at the edge of the universe. Then, when the local residents forget to pay their protection fees, I might accidentally blow up some orphans with a Thorax.
I think I have to change my pants now.

The disco with the secret entrance on Paren station? Yep. Being able to stretch your legs, buy a new hairdo and clothes, custom paint your ship, ogle the Terran navy pilots... Ok, it was all chrome and the interaction could have been done on computer screens from your ship, but it was fun.
Would it fit into Eve? Sure. Our far off objective after all is to be living in a complete space opera universe.
Would I give it priority? No. Eve is already at the bleeding edge with single shard, big space battles, the player run economy and other stuff, I'd rather the Devs kept improving those rather than spend time retrofitting things we already know are possible.

OK, here goes my lead balloon. Save all the work in the avatars. Make it a planet side MECH. Flyers, Miners, Fighters, Bases, Refineries, Freighters full of minerals heading to space stations to feed the factories. Build your Mechs (whole new skills set/modules) on stations load them into freighters for planetary use. Take and hold the planet while your corporation mines all of the rare minerals from the planet, then move on. You want conflict? Imagine the coordinated space and planet side battle for position of a planet loaded with trillions in minerals. I am just scratching the surface of this idea. You keep the basic game as it is, but you add new uses for your spacecraft and a whole new mess of planet side vehicles/modules/skills.
No one has every really done MECH right. If anyone could pull it off, I have faith that CCP could do it as it has never been done before.

I for one would really love to be able exit my ship and walk around in a Starbase or land on a Planet and go exploring.
Something also I would like to see someday is a way to change the appearance of our ships. ( allow for different Paint jobs and Corp Ensigns on our ship)

Edited by: Sheerborn on 06/10/2006 20:21:48 Walking around a space station to sit in a bar and have some real interaction would be nice. No need for combat. RPing and just socializing in these places would add a lot of depth, even if it's weak in design.
Same thing with planets. Make a pilot depot/bar of some sorts ON the planet. So you just walk around and do the same thing. Maybe include a few minigames, make them customizable like a house? Would add some cool features, nothing to change the actual game itself. Would create immersion in my humble, exaggerated, bored at work, hungry, tired and horny little mind.
EDIT: Not horny anymore.

There is no point to being able to walk around stations... unless you can kill people in them.
Then all these small arms I have might be useful.
Speaking of which... why isn't there a USE option when you right click on corpses???

If we are to blue sky what is to come, and this thread appears to be doing that, we should remember Moore's Law as well as what a "VR universe" can be.
1. Moore's law is boiled down to this simple statement:
"Every two years processing power will roughly DOUBLE."
In the last few years there were some concerns that we were/are approaching the time when this will hit a brick wall...then new technologies and methodologies arrived and this law appears to be valid for another 20-30 years, barring yet more new and innovative ways of making computer processors in the future.
This means that the evolution of EVE doesn't have to be limited to JUST the pod and ships.
2. VR Universe An alternate reality to go/visit/live/play/work in. Gibson (novelist) envisioned this with his cyberpunk novels many years ago, and now there are the beginnings of what he was describing in a few places around the net. There and 2nd Life come to mind. (not perfect or complete, but the goal is one 'place' rather than shards.)
EVE-Online is probably one of the BEST examples of this as CCP is striving for one world as opposed to meaningless shards.
As EVE evolves and grows (assuming that CCP realizes the potential), the addition of the 'walking around' component would eventually become a part of the universe.
The pod pilot would become one PIECE of this VR "place" rather than just a fleet/economic/alliance simulator.
Imagine down the line that EVE grows and becomes one of those Gibsonian worlds. Interaction on a personal level in station or say on the capital city of Amarr/Rens/Jita or a fleet action around an alliance station would be just one part of the "world".
Think of the scenes in starwars (movie not game) on Correscant where there there is a living breathing throng of buildings/people/places and interaction.
The EVE universe could BE like that in look and feel down the line.
I'm daydreaming here, being at the beginnings of VR rather than downline IN a VR place, but we should NEVER limit our thinking to what is. We should hope and strive for what could BE.
Finally we should remember (and some of us who were here at the beginning do) that EVE was never given a shot in HELL of lasting six months...yet here we are three years on playing/living/working/fighting here and happily discussing its future with membership still on a beautiful UN- MMOG curve upward.
Who KNOWS what the future holds? I'll bet even CCP doesn't, but if they're smart, and they're listening, I'm willing to bet that they would want something like this.
A living breathing universe.
my 2 cents. ----- ------------

The hypocratic ramifications regarding this statement are unbelievable.
1- The devs freely accept changes to other peoples programs to incorporate "the eve world"
2 - Yet you change the font ingame to aid your style of game play - and they then try their best to "hide the said font" and make distibution of modifications very problematical due to the compression size of the res.stuff file.( Yes I can change the font)
Is it possible to defend the devs / ccp in this issue? - Imho No.
I am glad that when my time runs out ill be gone. You have shown your true nature. and to look upon it, isnt a nice feeling.
With no more respect.

Quote: For those wishing to have a FPS environment in an EVE setting, I know of at least 2 mods being worked on, one for Half-life, the other for Unreal Tournament
Since Keiron's mentioned it, I might as well admit guilt: I'm one of the ones plotting one of those mods, along with a team of cherrypicked members from the modding scene and games industry. It's in very, very early stages, singleplayer design, I prefer the term FPE to FPS, since I'd like it to not just be shooting. Eve deserves something a bit more original than a on-rails doom clone. (my opinion is also that a multiplayer game will always fall down in comparision to eve itself, so we set on the idea of looking at one person passing through the Eve world(s) instead - I'm really glad someone's doing a UT mod though - definately going to look forward to that if that succeeds too... I just hope we don't come up with the same ideas)
It's very, very, early days, and we're keeping a low profile to avoid any pressure or build any hype. Plus, to be perfectly honest, there's the "little" difficulty of working out what storyline to use... Eve is too damn big - we could have 100 themes, and only scratch the surface of what could be done. So, we're still looking at storyboards with our scriptwriter, getting pipeline and asset managements sorted in advance, seeing what voice actors we can get, possibly getting them into a recording studio for auditions, looking at what mocap we'd need, and trying to decide what processes are best before we ramp into actual production. and of course, trying to work out how many more members we'll need to start getting onboard to produce the mod in a reasonable timeframe. (yes, we are masochists, yes my scriptwriter will scream when she reads this, because we'll have horrible flashbacks of projects we worked on where others hyped it to death before any assets were ever made... )
As for "walk around" in eve itself, I rather expect that could be a long time coming. if Kali pt2/3 brings a new trinity engine along with directx10, I can't imagine that engine will be really designed for a FPE game... so it's possibly an engine after that? even assuming a procedurally generated environment (ref Avalanche Studios tech demos) that's a massive undertaking to go from a ship to on foot. 3 years? perhaps 5? only time will tell....
Till then, we'll see what we can do to sate the appetites :)

I would love to have the ability to walk around the station. Sure in EnB it was technically worthless, but it was fun. I'd rather walk up to my agent then just open their "window" :/
