Funny... Sat here trying out a few of my usual games on Vista RC1 and they all run with exactly the same speed and EVE actually is running faster than on my XP install (both installs are 64bit versions). theinq should be taken with a pinch of salt (which I have been doing for a few years)

BEST question is why would anyone actually need Vista ?
After all Eve, SUPO COM, NWN 2 all work in DX9 so who needs Vista for the upcoming few years anyways.

If you think about it with logic - Vista provides you nothing on the + side.
on the minus side.
-reduced game performance
-lack of 3rd party security software
-you need a layer to read the license agreement to you before you accept it
-it very likely sends information on what you do with your comp to authorities
-it costs alot.

Wow you guys...
1) Kernal locking was going to happen in XP but so many people complained about it. It is neccescary. Sony rootkit uses kernal hooks, game protection like securerom uses kernal hooks, most nasty viruses use kernal hooks. It needs to be stopped.
2) Game performance on a beta os... yes, benchmark this, it means so much 
3) People just need to upgrade and stop crying about it. If you have less than 1gb of memory, go buy some more, it's bloody cheap.
4) ZOMG it uses memory on the gfx card. Turn aero off then, or get a new gfx card.
5) Don't like it? Stay with XP or go to Linux :P
also, rc2 is out, and alot better

On that note, congrats to Microsoft. I have never seen them working so hard on making people move off to other operating systems before. We should send them a pie or something with a ôthank youö note attached to it.

Well I'm fortunate that I'm in EVE for the long term and since CCP won't be scrapping the non Vista version any time soon I'll wait till Vista has settled down before I think about getting it.

First, whole topic started with inquire link which is (as every sane person knows) allways full of brown thingy.
Second, 80% of whiners havent even tried vistas beta/rc1 and therefore should not comment.
Third, if you have done your reading your question is useless.
Fourth, there is no one whipping you to buy Vista. You can keep on using XP, some Linux or macOS. So why to complain?

Regarding my computers, I upgraded from Windows XP to Linux and don't see myself buying Vista.
Its like moving from a scooter to a motor-bike. Why would you go back to a scooter, just because there is a new model for sale.

I used Linux for a while, but it has a long way to go when it comes to user interfaces and programming frameworks. KDE and Gnome are possibly the most developed desktop environments for it, and they are still on the Windows 98 level. But maybe with time, it will catch up and surpass Windows in terms of usability and looks. I really hope so, because thats the key to getting non computer geeks to start using it.

and ive been runnin vista-beta and i love it, no slow down atall, infact, quite the opposite.
fyi vista might not like older comps, or cheap comps.

Dno if it's been said already, but Vista's going the only OS to use DX10 (darn M$ monopoly) so if CCP makes the Trinity upgrade DX10 only, all who doesn't use Vista's gonna getted raped. Surely they won't couse it's CCP and they'd lose a great deal of subs by doing it.. It'd just be a bad thing if they did since the DX9's kinda getting old. BTW I hate MS-made visual bling bling and their survailance fetish..

You say the DX9 is getting old based on what ? .. Dont tell me your gutt feeling.
It aparently is true that DX 10 has higher object limit and is more efficient.
We shall never know since we wont be able to compare platforms I mean running a DX 10 tittle on a Vista machine and in a XP machine with final version of Vista. Who knows if there is this game performance issue in the launch version but they are able to patch it up in the Service pack 1 . But Id say the point no one really needs Vista for a long time remains.
And it is true that the all this DX hooblaa is based on the test made by Anandtech on BEta version of Vista. They said them selves that they shall test the stuff again once the final version is ready.

Some older mmo's, as say, anarchy online, and probably this one, too, actually gets a speed boost in Vista, even if the 3D interface is used.

These type of discussions were around when XP came, everyone swore they would run Linux.
All those people now run XP, and complain about Vista. And that they will probably move to Linux.
Your words are about as much worth as a Civilian Shield Booster :P

Hrmmmm... I think I will reserve judgement until Vista is actually released. Once that happens, I'll track down some guy who dual boots Linux and Windows and ask him/her to compare the two. I'll then do some research about this DRM thing and see how it actually affects me. IMO, there is nothing wrong with DRM so long as it only manages the digital rights of the RIAA's music. So long as it isn't like that horrid root-kit, and doesn't screw up music that they DON'T own, I'm fine with it.
From what I've researched, if Vista DIDN'T use DRM, then Vista would not be allowed to play HDCP protected DVDs at all.

I have so far only experienced IMPROVMENTS in performance using my beta copies of Vista, I really don't have a clue what everyone is talking about when they say the Vista is terrible and sucks.
The REAL problem is that it has become fashionable to hate Microsoft.

If that's true it doesn't leave much choice in the issue of whether or not to upgrade. That's a real bummer.

I still wont pay 200Ç> for the miniscule performance improvement.
There simply aint logic suporting the move :) atm. Fortunatelly there are more villing quinea pigs than I am. PPl who feel the HW and OS investment is good plan to get the EGG timer to their desktop 
After all during the 1.5 years that I estimate it takes before there is enough DX10 content.Then one might do the move. The price of Vista will come down and as a whole it will be more patched up.
