Edited by: Xavier Cardde on 09/10/2006 12:22:42 I remember back in 2001 being interested in EVE... I figured I would be a simple pilot flying cruisers and trying to keep the law off my back. I suppose my early vision was nothing like the actual thing.
Then in 2003 I bought EVE Online in May from the shelves and fired it up. I was amazed by the depth of the game even then. The culture and future outlook were awesome.
Early EVE was a whole different game. I played for three days before seeing my first Cruiser... an Osprey... And I was amazed by the power of the mighty Osprey and shuddered in fear from it.
Money making was really really really hard, Id say that a million ISK was worth what 40 or even 60 million is worth today. I made alot of my money selling the location of Kernite in empire for 200K and thinking that was real money. (oh how i regret not hunting for harvester drones now)
Eventually I worked up 7 million ISK... a fortune to me. I made it mostly re-selling 150mm and 250mm Gauss Rails and CU Vapor Bores. Good money I figured.
I got my first Moa and thought of it as a mighty ship of the line. Tier 3 was the best in firepower money could buy back then and even the best pirates used them. At the time Teir 3 cruisers were hotsellers and the trade channels are alive with selling and buying.
I scored my first kill after being ripped off for a factory slot. I was able to kill and pod the Merlin pilot right outside of the station before the guns killed me. No CONCORD and I was able to instantly redock. I sold the corpse for a mil to the other guys who were ripped off.
I lost that same Moa in .6 security to a gang of early pirates... I was ****ed for weeks.
Other than that I remember seeing j0rt's dominix and remember my balls suck up into my stomach... The Dominix was an early warhorse and used almost exclusivly medium weapons and cruisers were the typical prey in the m0o camps of Mara and Passari. Not too long after the DEVs broke up their camps by sending in CONCORD special forces. Not long after that Russian pilot discovered the Armageddon and saw that heatsinks stacked without penalty ending the reign of the Dominix.
All in all EVE was different and stranger... a world where BS NPCs didnt exist and the early corporations started banding together into alliances not yet supported by CCP. 0.0 was wild and empty with little besides shiny rocks.
We have come along way and I pity those who werent there to see it develop.
(lets not forget about the FANTA commercials and the 100 mil piece of tritanium either)

I played Eve in 2003 as well... and then empire was truly dangerous. I remember you used to get attacked at jumpin in some systems (because the location was not near the sentry guns or the gate like it is now). Sometimes you got killed before everything even loaded in your client. Fun times... not.
Also m0o used to tank and jam sentries and stuff. Alot of the current mechanisms in Eve today came from the need to protect people from whatever m0o figured out. Definently had respect for that corp. And yeah, fun times when the devs chased them out from Mara...
I guess Eve is better today, but its not as dangerous.

Eve was alot different back in the early days, if people think 0.0 is the Wild west of Eve it was nothing compared to Empire space back then.
My favourite memories were...
Getting my first cruiser (a maller) and thinking I was the dogs balls. Seeing a battleship in action for the first time (it was a geddon) while hitting some npc station at a moon. Seeing a raven afterburning past my punisher for the first time while approaching a gate
I'd say Eve has definetly improved overall since then but there was somthing about the first few months that makes me all nostalgic now.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

I Petitioned against this evil man called, HAMMERHEAD, to get a response that this was perfectly possible. And To Later Find out that he became a GM.

Spamming cruise missiles on kestrels was fun, also hitting unprotected NPC convoys that would drop 2000 mining drones, zyd or mega, BPOS, skill books, even ships! It was pretty nuts.
Finding the NPC spawn at Planet XI in EC-P8R and thinking it was the craziest thing ever.
Mining bistot in Lonetrek and thinking it was amazing.
Fitting 6 MWD to my scorpion and flying 3 million m/s through a star.
Getting my first cruiser (Thorax <3) and thinking it was the hottest ship ever.
Getting ganked at the Aunenen jump-in point before getting a chance to warp off, since when you jumped you didn't cloak afterwards. _______________________________________________

Making my first million trading antibiotics
Running missions for CONCORD and later bribing my level 3 CONCORD agent until I had +6 sec status.
Seeing a cruiser NPC for the first time in 0.0 (6-CZ) and thinking: "Wow!" (No cruiser NPCs in low sec in those days and no BS NPCs at all.)
The fuss people made when Zor accidentally ended up in a lvl 3 mission, before lvl 4 missions were available.
Hearing people say they would never fit anything other than 1400mm howitzers to their BS, even though they didn't fly Minmatar.
Mining Jaspet in Crielere when it became high sec for a little while, but the roid content wasn't changed.

I remember starting back in beta, and finding myself utterly unable to complete the tutorial due to lag (was unable to lock on to the roids); finally managed to jump out of system and spent hours doing homework and zapping plagioclase roids in my uber noobship...and almost losing my noobship due to angry NPCs.
I have to say, though, ignorance was bliss; I had no idea what sec rating was and I just flew willy-nilly about the universe without a care in the world... ------------------------------------ Tech2 Superweapon ftw:

Wow, that was a while ago.
When they first introduced shuttles, there was a bug with the Amarr version and it flew backwards!
I flew 36 jumps to pick up my new Probe (before the current superhighway system).
The Tempest with large artillery was THE ship to have until all of the whining got it nerfed into uselessness. That's true of just about every battleship in the game at some point.
Used to be able to pop 3 npc frigates with one torpedo :-).
I really miss the days when the game was one big mystery and we were all just trying to figure it out.

Summer of 2004, started my trial as a caldari pilot. I just flew back and forth from the station and belt trying to make some money. Back then i only made about 1m and never got to the cruisers. I still enjoyed it alot though, i dont know why but the mining really appealed to me back then (funny because now i have 80k sp total for mining and 4m in guns).
Also, back then i felt as if EVE had more atmosphere... Probably because back then the ships did turn into a wreck THEN blew up, there were more warp sounds (i think), and there was less lag. I also miss that little half circle on the lower right corner of your screen that showed the system, that thing was awesome even if it didnt do much.
Oh yea, back then battleships were still semi-rare, a few of my friend's freinds warped in with their megathron and apoc, it all looked so amazing to me.

In no particular orderą..
My first corp CEO misspelling the corp name.... the same guy later falling asleep while mining in an indy and getting blow up by rats.
M00..... 20 ships, 50 drones, 200 cargo cans at a gate camp... The same guys later being airlifted deep into 0.0 by concord.
The first fleet op I ever participated iną. hunting down Lord Zapp in his new Dommyą. I donĘt think we got him.. but it was fun.
Red Alliance pilots dupping cargo ships full of Mega and selling the isk on ebay.... the same guys later being banned.
Curse Alliance of Pirates. Proof if you repeat something often enough everyone eventually believes it.
During the beta.... roll backs... noooooooo!
OMG.... battleship belt rats!
Corp wide mining operation to afford your first battleship.
Buying my first combat ship... fear my Condor! Later upgrading to a Merlin! feel the power!
Hunting Red Alliance haulers deep in Curse.... they just kept comming and comming. Oh... and they used to logout when going though gates back then too. Some tactics just seem to never get old.
Back when cruisers could fire torps and cruise missiles watching some guy blow himself up when he launched torps, microwarped to his target, his target stripped his shield before he got there and the his own splash damage blowing him up.
Wondering what would happen if you put Bad Mojo and Gypsy Djinn in a small room and gave them both baseball bats. You wonĘt get this one unless you have spent any time on team speak with themą.. if you have you probably just fell out of your chair.
Stacking microwarp drives..... Woosh!

I remember mining Arkonor in dead end empire space, before it was moved to 0.0
On my 1st day (may 8, 2003), i remember getting my isk by mining omber in a 1.0 system until i could upgrade my ship
No BS for months ingame, Cruisers were kings in that time and the 1st player to get a BS was Lord Zap, he then used it to camp entry point in empire space and nobody dared to fight against him
No autopilot, no highway
NPC pirates at gates up to 0.8 system
1m isk was worth over $20 on ebay in the 1st month Unlimited BPC that were worth 1/3 of the BPO
A Tech 5 mining laser given to a player by mistake (well, i think it droped from a GM in a jove ship)
Techell making a fortune by having a monopole on Miner II and selling them at 5m each (which was a hell of a lot of isks back then)
Ah, so many memories

Actually, this was after release, the Devs had to rollback the game once because of an exploit that was used by many players and gave them billions of isks back when 1m isk was a real fortune
The devs got overwhelmed by that exploit to a point that they had to close the server for a while and rollback it to almost a day before that, so that everything was back as it was before the exploit started being used, they then gave 100k isk to all players as a compensation for lost assets and isk

I would love to have the old login screen and music back, to me, that was part of the eve experience. Yup, it may sound silly but I have so many fond memories....well I would have if my memory worked
Aye, the good ol' days were fun. Eve were a big place with kernite, omber, plag, scord and veld in every high sec system. Giant secure cans were actually useful then as we had no 'special' ships like the kids have today.
All we had were frigs, cruisers, battleships and indy's, none of this rubbish tech 2 stuff
The old system before the cloaking after you jumped really ****ed me off and stopped me from doing missions for over a years after someone popped me when I had to do a crap delivery job. I think there were a shed load more pirates about then too, you would rarely go through a system without someone trying to get a shot at you.
Exploration was a load of fun. It used to be nice going into any system and finding junk with your scanner. Unfortunately very little was of use, maybe you'd find an old station or something, most you'd have is a few frig rats. Some things use to look pretty cool though.
I can remember seeing my first bs and nearly crapping myself, the sound of the lasers compared to my crappy frig potato guns sounded awesome.
The forums were a shed load more mature back then, people would have their dissagreements but you didn't have the retarded, no-brainer replies you get these days. Maybe it's justa a sign of the times though, anyone can afford a PC these days and getting on the internet is no problem.
So much has changed, it's just the little things for me which make me feel as though it's not the game it used to be. Maybe I have been playing for too long (nearly 4 years) and am getting too cynical and protective.
/me still wants option of having original login screen and music.

I started right before Beta was ending. I played I think about 5 or 6 days of beta, when Armageddon Day came. They gave everyone maxed out skills, and a good chunk of ISK. Too bad I had no idea what I was doing, cause I was being killed everywhere.
Then the wait. It was a few weeks before Beta ended that the Game went live. I was like a little kid waiting for christmas. In my short time in Beta, I got addicted to the game. So much so, that I played Homeworld and Terminus just for some kind of space game fix.
Then when the game went live, I had Credit Card problems. I still have the original CD I bought, with the manual and key. It took another week or so to get my CC problem resolved.
The game was different. Way different. I remember agents really sucked. They would send me on courier missions 30 jumps away. I had a condor as my first ship after the Ibis. I got the condor to be fast enough to out run the Guristas Plunderers at the gates throwing missiles at me.
I had no idea about mining really, althouh high end ores were available in empire for a short time.
I lived up in Torrinos early on. I remember m0o used to camp in Mara, and I gathered a bunch of new pilots around Kisogo to take them on in ibis's. There were about 20 or more of us flying at m0o in the starter ship. About 3 minutes later, there were 20 or more cargo containers floating around, which they used to keep around for the lag factor.
I also remember how horrible the connectivity was back then. People complain now, but I remember the roll-back. That was the worse. EVE has improved by leaps and bounds from those first few months. But, I do miss the exploration early on. Everything was new. Nothing was given to you. Mining was done in bantams and merlins for security. At least for us Caldaris. That first cruiser was a pain to get. 14mil for a Moa, and we had to *shudder* go to Daras to pick it up from Cornexant Corp.
We always thought Jove was gonna open up in a matter of weeks. We plotted an planned how we were gonna get there, and what we would do when there. Like I said, things were so much more secretive. The devs were still more at work just making it work than actually adding new features and planning new regions.
Over 3 1/2 years of EVE now. I take long breaks now, but I'm still an addict.

The server would go more than 23 hours without being rebooted...
100 v 100 fleet battles were possible...

After beta I remeber starting the game on the first day of launch and there were skill training problems.
Ninja mining ark in empire space, and power gaming the first 3 months of the game.
Obtaining blueprints like crazy, 2 days after launch to get a iteron mk2 print, 6days after to get a vexor, 13 days after for a thorax, 3 weeks to get a dominix BPO. Profits were amazing and there were only a few sellers.
Traveling all over eve without autopilot in beta, then traveling all over eve with autopilot, but highway system. Then the highway system, then no highway system again.
Remebering TTi being the biggest corp in eve, everyone hating ragnar. The rise and fall of all the early alliances, M0o's antics throughout eve. Techell corp cornering the miner 2 market, then becoming the most powerful manufacturer in eve, then came NAGA. Lots of crazy bugs agent missions giving insane standings, standings being so easy to change.
Asteroids not regenerating for a long time after launch, the devs going on vacation after launch so nothing got fixed.
The jove events that happened.

No shuttles yet, that was fun having ships spread all over the freakin galaxy. I still remember the original forum where they were talking about scheduled bus service (Interbus!).
Then there were the little donut status indicators on your targets, those were fun. As was the mini-radar on the bottom corner. Then there was the old market map that highlighted the highest and lowest prices on a starmap. Bright green = good, bright red = bad. I liked that one too, definitely miss it.
The mad rush for construction space when they had the 1isk rentals that didn't time out. The server was live for 5 freakin hours and I had to go 9 jumps to get one!
Oh, and the server was live for 5 freakin hours and somebody ALREADY had my first choice of character name! That was BS of the first degree!
And speaking about rollbacks, what about when the first increased the rat difficulty, and put rats on most of the jumpgates in .6 and lower? Everybody in lower sec got trapped, and almost all of them got podded in like 2 hours. Whoops.
Then there was the rush after downtime finished to sell your minerals before the NPC buy orders got filled and prices tanked.
What really stunk though was getting chosen for the first batch of pre-alpha testers, I was so freakin happy about that. Then it was really depressing finding out the server was live for 3 hours a day. And those 3 hours were in the middle of my work schedule. It was pretty funny though when they had a sound error one day during alpha and every sound was replaced by a 'Mooooooo'. And 15 minutes later, it was really annoying, I still wonder if that is where the m0o name came from.

- npc spawns that could actually kill you and same ones allways scrambled with every ship. - npc spawn that spawned on top of you whe you were guarding mining op. (could be just my good looks) - Missions that were really really boring , had huge amounts of jumps and had allmost zero reward. - one size fit all MWD. - Area effect torpedos. - Missile spammage that allways killed pod. - Shield tank on every ship. (including mega,apoc,thorax...) :) ....

Edited by: Kay Han on 11/10/2006 06:00:31 i started march 2004 with eve. What i remember the most is:
-Mining low mines in a MOA for my first BS.
-Flying mostly afk from empire to delve, to start mining high mines for my first BS.
-Losing my Moa, when warping to a belt to check out the shiny new 0.0 ore.
-cap recharger II¦s only costs 5 mill.
Damn.. eve was fine at this time. only 11k peeps at peak times. No Blobing all over the place.

Irritating but I actually liked it when missiles could hit other things than it's target. I used to hide from rats behind asteoroid.
Oooh... and the asteoroids that keeped on growing when no one mined them. You could find valdspar the size of small planet in way off systems.
And of course /autopilot, the command that changed everything :-)

Really? I dont remember that. That would be so cool! They should bring it back.
Ditto with the missile thing.

Nah, splash damage caused more problems that it solved. #1 of all was that it made missles almost totally un-useable in empire space. If it carried too far, and hit the wrong guy, CONCORD!
Almost as absurd was the anti-ship mines. Drop one off, and maybe nobody hits it for a while. Then while you're flying around in 0.0, somebody would hit that mine 10 jumps away, and Surprise! Concorded in 0.0! Oh, and they were lag-tastic too.

Easy way around that...confine splash "damage" to non-player objects. So that asteroids and other non-player act as obsticals, but there is no way to **** off other players or get aggroed by Concord.
I dunno...would make the game more interesting IMO, but I obviously got outvoted.
The one thing I still dont like that hasnt been changed is the fact that planets have no collision detection. I hate flying through planets.

Npcing at the arse end of JK-Fix then having to fly back to gehi to repair because armour repairers were rubbish.
Hiding behind a roid and chaining sansha juggernauts for hours on end.
Being hunted by Setec in empire space
Ignoring the travel advice to avoid Mara and seeing m0o in action. Then dying.
Travelling from Curse to yz-LQL to npc in my Moa with 425 artillery. It was about 170 jumps, no instas or mwd and my corp mates were npcing to buy an unlimited armageddon BPC from RUS
Seeing a load of people parading battleships at the Crielere Incident event, and getting blown up again.

sounds like fun times, I think it would be cool if some weapon collision detection was in the game. Hiding behind objects and such. And splash damage, I'm sure they could fix it to reduce concord deaths, but I guess then people would exploit it. ---------------------- I fly Amarr and Gallente ships Amarr because they peow peow - and look cool... Gallente because they are effective |

I may remember totaly wrong, but accidental splash damage from missiles where only one of the reasons why they changed them. The major reason was that it took a bunch of calculations to check if a missile or torpedo hit anything during it's 45-60s flight time, while the system we use today only checks this once-ish. (Anyone remember the nice "necklaces" you got when you fired torpedoes at interceptors?)

I remember when i first started i had no concept of it being an MMORG, i didnt understand what i meant as this is my first and only MMORG.
I joined up with some guys (FTO Cruise, Mandrill) in a newb corp and set a goal to make 3 battleships, 2 geddons and 1 apoc.
Spent 1 month mining omber for my precious geddon and still remember that feeling of when i climbed aboard.... ooh was great times. back then a bs was a serious achievement :P
Spent time in an empire corp and enjoyed all the missions and fun empire had to offer then joined an alliance and the game has gone on from there really.....
Today eve seems so serious, when you see the general way the community speaks to one another its amazing we are all still here. Eve has a fanatical player base which is the reason eve is still here but sometimes i do think that the obsessiveness of the game gets to people ( i remember the Xetic war and the 2 deaththreats i recieved, couldnt believe people took it that far).
Back in the day it was so mellow and with only like 5k people playing it was nice and quiet with established warzones in the usual places pvp and carebear were both happy. Seems more like Counter Strike nowadays. Round Draw...boom headshot! stabbed vagas, ability to log off in alliance space and disappear in 60 seconds, complexes spewing h4x isk out due to poor programming etc etc
With the new regions opening up i suppose it will start that empty space feeling again but if there is something of value there (precious ore, gas clouds, complexes, moons) then it wont take long for one or two of the big alliances to just claim it all and blockade it all up.
Eve certainly lost that special shine it used to have, maybe its age and the alliance life where by law you have to hate to the bone another entity who wear a different colour but seems we dont have the grand scale anymore, in fact it feels its a very small universe now.
Perhaps its time for the 'first ones' to pass beyond the rim to join the others and leave this universe to the younger races :)

... buying my first bestower for 1.2m, before I even created Karma.
creating Karma, and thinking I knew how to start out well :P buying my first iteron II for 1m ... equipping it with a miner I, smartbomb and civilian shield booster... then heading out to mine... with just enough engineering skill... I could run the civ booster indefinately, and no NPC pirates could get my shield down below 80% and in the case there were more than two... well that's what the smartbomb was for ;) and so I spent many a day... but then, I Was unemployed and had a lot of anime to watch ;)
being scared to death of gate campers... hearing rumors of m0o putting up blockades every which where...
losing a vexor full with all of my belongings to three player pirates before the instigation of gate sentry guns.. still a bit ****ed at it actually... I opened first on one of them with my one of my three howitzers, removed half his shields with the first salvo. but before I could open fire on the other two... I lost my internet connection for five hours straight. :P
and thus, my two year long exodus from EVE started. _________________ "No Worries" Karma, fool on the hull. |
