What exactly is okay to put in a sig? I mean, half of the SW-related BoB sigs were removed, and half were okay (for a while there at least). Are we talking about SW copyrights, copyrights in general, Eve-related content, or something else? Certainly some of the sigs I still see contain so-called "copyrighted" material in them? Would just like to know, should I ever decide to make a sig of my own.

Farrellus Cameron Sturmgrenadier Inc R i s e	Posted - 2006.10.11 21:35:00 - [29] Technically the rules say that you can ONLY put content DIRECTLY related to EVE in your sig. Now, when they choose to enforce that rule is another matter. Just like any rule in life, you can often get away with breaking it as long as you don't attract a lot of attention. BoB attracted attention, and so ISD (CCP) put a stop to it. Copyright may be part of the issue, but it's not clearcut about whether it would be considered actual copyright infringement. It might be considered "fair use," and even if it wasn't it'd be hard to show actual damages. More then likely, the real issue is the likelihood of the copyright owner actually going after them. Lucasfilm is very aggressive in protecting its copyrights. However, it has also tolerated a lot of fair use. If they think things have gone too far they can send a "cease and desist" letter; although it's debatable about whether they would actually pursue any real legal action and even whether they would actually win. Outbreak's sigs technically use copyrighted material because every one of the photos they use is copyrighted, and there's even a separate cause of action by each of the models individually in certain jurisdictions. However, unless they are getting all of their photos from the same source, you're talking about a whole bunch of different people, instead of just one entity like Lucasfilm. The likelihood of any of them even knowing about the use, let alone caring enough to go after CCP, is slim. The reality is that there are too many people with too many sigs for ISD (CCP) to really patrol and enforce the rules universally, so it's just a matter of whether you get their attention.
