Edited by: Pesky LaRue on 12/10/2006 00:23:26 1. check every piece of loot via "view market details" as you fly to gates so that you don't undersell/reprocess something that could net you millions
2. run through the tutorial twice. then do it again a week later.
3. don't trust anyone unless you know them in RL (and even then, use your best judgement!)
4. don't play EVE while tied to a chair.

Ahh yes the ol' chair mishap, heres some advice which has changed the way i play EVE For ever, Its a harsh lesson but everyone has to learn it.
"Do not fly what you cannot afford to replace"
Thats all fine and dandy but everyone has the 'Bright light syndrome' Get the biggests and meanest ship you can get and then self proclaim that you're king of the world! Then loose it...Its a harsh lesson but that Battlecruiser crippled me, Since then i've allways been cautious and even though i can afford a battleship i cant afford to replace it so i dont buy it.
Summened up, You will learn this lesson by you're self in time
Mining: Ore theifs are NOT as common as people say they are(any who argue clearly dont know how to mine safley)
Once you learn youre 'Do not fly what you cant afford to loose' lesson take risks other wise space can get rather dull
And dont be afraid to ask n00binating questions! If you give a man a fire he will be warm for a night, Set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life. |

If buying an item with multiple sellers in the same station (i.e. 3 sellers of widget-q at a station, one for 5.0, one for 6.0 and one for 7.0) Purchase the lowest priced ones first, or the market will happily take the lowest priced items and sell them to you at your selected price first (i.e. from above, purchase two widgets, if you select the seller for 7.0, you get two widgets for 7.0 each, but it pulls from the inventory of the 5.0 seller first, who gets 7.0 per unit even though s/he is selling at 5.0).
Which can be a real bummer if someone has grossly overpriced something and you accidently buy from them first (or in the case of extra zeroes on the price, at all).
Not that this has happened to me.....

The first thing I wished I had done at first character creation is make sure that Charisma is the lowest I can get. I made the mistake of "balancing" my attributes to be roughly across the board before I knew what I wanted to do in game. At first I wanted to just carebear it up and do mining and building all the time. I had just left SWG and was a jedi/Master Shipwright and wanted to continue in the shipwright vein. But I got my first taste of pvp and got that rush and did a 180 and focused completely on combat-related training. Of course I got 2 more accounts and started training for industrial characters to take care of my "building" needs. Not to mention the nice fat wallet from mining high ends :-)
The other thing I wished I had doen from the getgo was do all my learning and advanced learning skills at the start. I waited for about 2-3 months before I did them. It didn't really cost me much in the long run sense I got them out of the way early. But I made damn sure to do them on my 2 alts all the way up to advanced 4. Now one of my alts is nearing my main's SP.
Best advice: if you are into combat/ratting, get into something that can make you the isk, once you get into it, then train all of the learning skills and advanced to 4. You will thank me later on beleive me. With advanced learning skills you will be getting rooughly over a million SP per month easy if not more.
In essence: take the first 1-2 months getting into something that can make you isk, then start all your learning skills and then the advanced learning skills until you get to 4. Then everything will be fast as hell.
For instance: training cruiser from 4 to 5 will take you, lets say 45 days with minimal attributes. With advanced learning skills and some nice +2 or +3 implants that same training will take you 25 days. Can't beat that.

Have goals.
Find a corp that supports your goals.
If you want to make a lot of ISK, get a torp Raven into 0.0 and go NPCing. This is a lot easier if you're in an 0.0 corp/alliance of some sort. I wish I'd gone 0.0 sooner.
You will most like lose your first few PvP encounters due to adrenaline-induced errors like failing to turn your tank on. Don't panic.
Read the ships and modules forum, then experiment with variations on the template setups.

Random tips that came to mind: - Nowhere is 100% safe - No single ship/setup can perform all tasks, pick one and do it well - If it seems too good to be true, it probably is ;) - Some T2 ships look quite a lot like their T1 versions - Friends, knowledge and tactics are more important than skillpoints

This is good advice. When I started playing I rushed interceptors only to find I really couldn't do anything useful with them. Take some time to browse through all of the available skills and train the useful ones up to 3 or 4. Also, bite the bullet any get advanced learning skills done as early as possible.

Edited by: Simon Jax on 12/10/2006 14:40:58 A couple of things I've learned for mission running:
- In combat it always takes you longer to enter warp than you think it will!!! - The mission details will more often than not list the faction you are going up against. i.e. - Gurista / Sansha / Mordu. Look them up for damage type and tank accordingly. - By default, whatever is chewing through your armor will swallow your hull before you can warp out. If you aren't sure if you tank will hold or not, equip a Damage Control to give you that extra few seconds.
And just a few good ol' forehead smackers:
- If you are running a courier mission, double check that you moved the good from your inventory to your cargo. - If you like to read the mission details before accepting the mission, don't forget to actually accept the mission before leaving station. - Most guns use ammo. Leaving station without ammo will guarantee that you will run out. Most likely when you need it the most.
But, the most important thing to remember:
- Murphy's law applies to EVE even more than it applies to golf. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Be prepared, and again, don't fly anything you can't afford to lose.

As already said, ALWAYS view market details on unfamiliar loot. Hell, even familiar loot can fluctuate in price by a substantial amount. Tied in with this is selling practices - if you are just selling loot outright for whatever you can get, more often than not you are sorely shortchanging yourself.
Here's what I usually do when selling loot: 1) Check market details; see how much you could buy one for in your area. Next, check how much people are paying for them. The way to do this is to have the upper market window (Sellers) sorted with the lowest price at the top, and the lower market window (Buyers) sorted so the highest price is at the top.
2) If there is a sizeable difference between what people are selling them for and what they are buying them for, you will want to consider a sell order. Let's say you have 52 150mm railguns. You see you could buy them for 6k each, and you could sell them right off at 2k each. Looks like a good opportunity for a sell order.
3) Go to sell your item, and click the Advanced button on the lower right. Near the top is a field with your asking price. So, those rails were selling for 6k each? Sell yours for 5k. Another thing to keep in mind here is distance... if everyone within 6-10 jumps is selling for 6k, but someone 10+ jumps is selling for less, don't worry about them. The other thing you want to look at is the time range you want your sell order up for. When I started I usually did 3-day orders, mainly because I could only have 5 orders at a time and wanted either a quick sell or to clear up the order slot so I could put other items up. Now I've got a few skills, I can put up 21 orders or so, so I usually let orders run for 1-3 weeks.
To check the status of your orders, look in the Orders tab of your wallet.
It's a nice way to make money even while not playing, as well as a nice way to get rid of excess loot.

If you get killed in PvP and it was a good fight and you had fun. Tell the other pilot.
The very first time I got killed in PvP I fought another pilot for about 5 minutes and then a friend of his showed up and they pwned me quick. Rather than get mad I messaged them and said hey that was a lot fo fun. They didn't pod me and in fact gave me back my loot. I still run into them both sometimes and we go hunting together.

Jack Daniels is my co-pilot.
1. Know that a high priced named WCS does not work better then a regular. It only uses less CPU. 2. Don't go into Rancer and announce to local you just bought your very first battle cruiser an hour ago. 3. Don't warp back to the station while still under aggression flag after your first attempt at piracy in low-sec. 4. Ctrl-Space is a good key combo to know. If you get stuck on something going into warp this will take you out of warp.

Some things I'd want to tell myself as a noob:
- Dont wait for drones to return if your tank is breaking.
- When a target is shooting at you approach it from an angle, not straight ahead, it will miss you more often this way.
- Don't get (too) comfortable: If somebody is ratting/pretending to mine next to you in a low sec belt, he might attack you when you don't expect it...
- Drones are good, but they can really be a pain in the ass sometimes...
- If you warp to a random moon in 0.0, you might run into a POS.
- Don't forget to re-insure your ships when insurance runs out.
- Always get the best insurance.
- If you want to do PvP: join a corp with 0.0 access. Get a JumpClone, fly a Frig/Cruiser with cheap enough fitting. Dont be afraid to die.. you will make up whatever you lose on ratting for an hour in 0.0.
- Eve is not a game you can play for 30 minutes :(
- Watch the combat movies and read the comments, sometimes you get good tips/ideas.
- Don't bother with immature people: if you block someone you will not need to listen to what he/she is writing...

1. Having medium turrets and the cruiser skill does not qualify you to fly a cruiser. Support skills will make you feel like you didn't just waste a few million ISK on a shiny piece of garbage.
2. Mining is not nearly as fun as you think it is. The novelty will wear off. Luckily, shooting at other players is more fun than you think it is, and the novelty will not wear off.

+If you know you'll be outnumbered WCS is your friend.
+There is more to PVP than the tank or gank mentality. EWAR, drones and leadership have all enriched the game greatly.

Edited by: master bates on 14/10/2006 11:50:15 Specialise in the ship you enjoy most, if you wanna be a small fast fighter then train for assault frigs/ interceptors and max out that skill. If you wanna be an uber cruiser pilot then you should max out the cruiser skill, support skills are key. Same for the battlecruiser, battleship etc, if you max out the particular spaceship skill then you get maximum bonuses. check the bonuses, its no good fitting hybrid guns if it has energy gun bonuses and vice versa(there are exceptions) tech 2 stuff isnt as difficult to get as you may think, most of it requires lvl4 in one skill i.e. tech 2 armor reps, tech2 shield boosters, the main tech 2 stuff that requires long skills are ships , guns, drones, missiles. dont take player age fully you may be 3 years old character wise but only have 1 years worth of sp, and even then it may all be in industry. a group of frigs can pwn a battleship easily with minimum losses. if you are in a gang and the fc(fleet commmander) is drunk, leave the gang cause he will make mistakes. when in 0.0 everyone is hostile, unless you know them, even alliance members be wary of everyone. when travelling low sec/ 0.0 pipes check the map for amount of ships destroyed in the last hour, if a lot has been killed in one system then there is most likely a gate camp, so dont go there.
dual accounts ftw
oh and dont do drugs, stay in school
edit*** invest in a notepad, as previous poster said, use it to jot down favourite ship setups, skill scheduling, mission notes, market notes, building notes. keep your buddy list written down, use your address book for hostiles, much better to know that if there are 20 green lights in a system then you should leave missions

2) support skills matter more than you might think
3) if you dont have anything targetted activate your modules (ie click on each one) they will start to blink. now when that target comes along just left click on it and all mods/guns you've clicked on will activate as soon as lock is finished (PS this might get some getting used to...and also much fun for your gang mates when you lock and shoot a gate rather than a wartarget!)

Specialization is key to success! You'll never fly as many ships as well as the people who have been here for years, but with focused training you can fly a particular ship as well as anyone. The guy with 30 million skillpoints can still only fly one ship at a time, so with focused training you won't be far behind him.

The old adage "buy low, sell high" works well here. Keep a list of expensive items and track the cost across 4 or 5 regions. I've bought a couple items for 1.5 mil and 2 regions distant I sold them for 5 mil each. Buying and selling can make you as good a return as missions do (though prap's a bit less exciting)

This post is really good... some points of wisdom.
-In most aspects of fighting, be alligned to something while fighting so it's easier to warp off to survive.
-Survival means not lossing that ship you put alot of time and money into.
-To compliment previous statment, Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. Treat anything you fly into battle with as already lost.
-Don't take that nice new shiney HAC and go into PvP with a PvE setup.
-In the long run it's cheaper to build your own ships.
And there is so much more that I could add.

Give piracy a go at some point. No really do. I didn't do it for my first two years in game and was considering leaving the game. I gave it a go as "one last role of the dice" and now I'm back enjoying the game as much as I ever did. I dont pirate much any more but I found a new interest in PvP
Implants are over rated IMHO. I haven't used them except junk implants that I couldn't sell for over two years. It means I lose less when the pod pops which still happens from time to time
Clones are NOT over rated. Mine has always been updated 1 million SP before I needed to to make sure I never forgot. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Got Lag? Dev Responses

From a noob who has only been playing a couple of days...
--learn to use the map
I was running simple delivery mishs while learning basic skills last night. Get mish, click on set destination, undock, hit autopilot...play XBox until I hear that I have reached my target system...
last night I noticed a delivery was taking a while. I finally looked at my course and saw I was on jump 12 of a 35 system jump. WTF? I wound up taking a shower and then playing my XBox until I got there. After the delivery, I choose "shortest route" rather than "safest route"...changed it from a 35 system jump to a six system jump. Worst 16k ISK I have earned yet.
