This one is finished as far as I can tell. They're just slowly turning it on to see how we responded to each new activity the NPC's do.

Otherwise there is not actual reason to engage them... though still wondering about all those noncombat haulers and autopilot shuttles and interceptors with no offensive modules that seem to have been killed by them.

Yeah, AI is difficult. So most games go with just making things harder to defeat through overpowering stats. Take a look at boss mobs in just about any game... insane hps, huge damage, but still dumb as a post.
Or often times, AI will cheat with perfect information that players can't always get, or have to work towards getting but can't access instantly. Games that cheat like this are annoying and quickly become un-fun to play. The trick is to let the AI cheat, but subtly such that players don't notice it.
In Eve, Drifters cheat. Concord cheats. Faction police cheat. The latter two we accept as being "the law" and allowed to warp directly to (spawn on) people. And Concord is the be-all end-all punishment for crimes in security space. So their stats can be tough and their damage uber.
But drifters?
There better be a good story on this one why the AI cheats, the devs cheat by buffing them, and they drop nothing.
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all.

When I see an NPC dynamically adapt to a player I'll be impressed. Putting superweapons on them doesn't count.
Very cool lore teasing though. I've never seen this kind of thing in EVE. You should do more.
Lastly, terrible name. Drifter. It makes me think of old cowboy movies. (Watch out fer that thar drifter, son, he's packing plenty of iron. Eyup.)

All i can handle is the seekers in empire, and there a very welcome add to a daily routine, that being sad love the vids and forum posts about the battleships there good fun to look at after a long forced brake from EVE.
In general though i hope the Seekers will be actually worth killing soon, those scraps are stacking up after hunting them down for a couple of hours.
Keep up the great work CCP ! |

Frankly, i''m less than impressed.
I couldn't even judge the power of that new 'AI' you came up with, since you're obviously hiding it behind overpowered cheating mechanics.
I'd be a lot more impressed if you finally came up with a decent AI using the same abilities and ships/fittings players have to work with. Or if it absolutely HAS to be exotic, at least something comparable. |

Hot damn but the ships are sexy!
Having been up close and personal with them I was a little dismayed that their size did not reflect their "BATTLESHIP" status and I thought they were cruisers to be honest. I've seen the super weapon videos but I never even got that far - two of them circled me at incredible speeds their normal weapons were ripping my Megathron to shreds even under full rep.
I landed a few good shots but then it was run away time as warning bells were screaming structure alert loss of ship imminent.
I've lost my cool in PvP before because I've failed to anticipate battle kicking off - this is worse. Warp in and engage is at lightning speed and damage is horrific.
Just for the challenge of doing it? Good stuff. For the lack of any satisfation or reward otherwise? Not again.

Darkblad wrote:War Kitten wrote:Anyone can just beef up the range/speed/HP/whatever stats on an NPC and make sure it harder to kill or harder to survive against. Someone managed to kite the Drifters, so you increase the range on the doomsday? Gee, seems like fair play. That's not so much showing off new intelligent AI. Intelligent AI would disengage, warp away, or do something within it's existing mechanics... not have a developer rewrite its mechanics. Agreed! It's no change of the AI but just adjustment of the offensive - and defensive - stats of the NPC. Series of my observations: SisiSubcaps could survive the Super Weapon. Increased that damage. Jam could blinfold the Drifters completely, also preventing the Super Weapon in the Process. Sensor strength got increased. It was possible to get the Super Weapon fired without taking damage when your ship was in warp at that exact moment. TQDrifters pointed. Kiting the Drifters, keeping distance above 200km prevented the Super Weapon from firing. Range got increased. Got hit 258km away, but some suggest a range of up to 500km. After all, they're as smart as they were in the beginning. They attack you when you're 77km or closer to the structure. They attack you when you're 28km or closer to the Wormhole. They follow you to where you warp to in the system as long as you're in the same ship. They just got boosted to ridiculous power.
Ya I agree that's kind of stupid. Don't get me wrong, I love the new drifters as a concept. But now it seems they went from being able to be solo'd as long as you properly set up a ship EXACTLY for them, to now there's one guaranteed loss at least. That's not "intelligent AI" nor does it even represent EVE's sandbox principle. Now they've not only broken the sandbox tenant by eliminating the ability for players to creatively combat these ships, to also buffing them to hell and back for the sole purpose of "artificially making their AI more intelligent." When again...all it is a buff to their stats. not a better AI.
So I'm sorry but CCP turned the Drifters from an awesome new Meta game all about an NPC (like burner missions were in the beginning before they were completely nailed down.) to basically an NPC that now breaks the core tenant(s) of EVE. The sandbox element and the meta element.
So...ya...totally nuked my love for the drifters there. As again...they now represent what I never want EVE to become. A game that drifts away from the sandbox and all about player choice/emergent gameplay, to a theme park. Nice job on that one CCP!
So CCP are these things now just a test bed for new concord NPCs or something? As they are now not very good content on their own. They were until you buffed them like crazy. Besides the lack of a loot table. But they were still fun just from the emergent gameplay/meta that came as a result. Now, they seem to just be a set of NPCs in the game you guys are using as a dynamic testbed for whatever you have coming down the pipe. When the concept of these NPCs on their own was awesome in their own right! So you shouldn't have buffed them as much as you did. They should have stayed the same. You could have easily taken the data that you accumulated and used that same "test bed effect" on Sisi. Instead of ruining an AMAZING NPC on TQ.
So for the future - please leave content like this alone once you get to where the players really enjoy it and create an entire meta around it. At least until you get all the stuff you have planned for said content to be full realized. Then you can dynamically buff them as much as you want. (Within reason of course)
EDIT: Also as "War kitten" pointed out. CCP have just basically done what EVERY other MMO does with Mob bosses to the new drifters. Buff the hell out of them if they deem them to be two weak for [insert X number of players here]. Which as I said numerous times above -is not what CCP is supposed to do |

The only real recorded kill of one of these is from a capital ship (Chimera of all things) and many losses of ships that can handle the hardest of NPC's everywhere else in space solo. Seems an NPC battleship that takes multiple players or a capital ship to kill might be just a little OP.
How about posting the ships types and combinations of ships that successfully defeated the Drifters.
Devs are pro at only providing one side of a story, just to make themselves look good.
Statistics and graphs are only good if you have all the relevant information available to make an informed decision. So far Drifters are simply a way for CCP to unbalance the game and take isk from players with an OP mechanic. 247 to 1093 - Has CCP found a legitimate way to rob players of their hard earned isk?? Is there a risk vs reward component here? Is the next iteration likely to require a fleet of carriers and dreads to destroy 1 NPC Battleship?
I imagine the numbers of Drifters killed won't change much. Most players are smart enough to know when faced with a lose, lose situation and will simply avoid it. I asked some friends who live in lowsec and their thoughts on Drifters was; Avoid them, they aren't worth the trouble to kill.
As for Seekers - I imagine you will continue to see low numbers, possibly declining numbers of these killed. The reward for killing them is not worth the effort. I popped 5 of them and with the time and ammo spent could have completed a lvl 3 mission and made 5X as much isk, they don't drop loot at all so there is a 100% loss there too.
If your going to spout off about something, provide accurate detailed information, not just the bits that you think make the change look good. How much does a Drifter pay when killed, what does it drop?
