Still new and in a Gallante frigate, I've been trying drone complexes and been frustrated by my inability to fit out against them well.
My standard load is railguns (mixed 125mm and 75mm because I don't have quite enough powergrid to go pure 125), which are great when the drones are at range but can't track fast enough to hit them close in. So I can clear a drone complex, but have to do a 80km+ kite, which is rather tedious.
If I switch over to electron blasters, they seem to not have quite enough reach to hit the drones reliably at the drones' preferred orbit distances, even on medium- or long-range ammunition types. So furballing with the blasters isn't any faster than kiting with railguns.
I've been flying Incursus for firepower and speed, but it only has one drone, and that one drone doesn't carry me through the whole complex. I could switch back to an Imicus to get three drones out there, but would have considerably less space to fit out the main ship.
I've already got a couple of levels in motion prediction, so I can't improve the railguns easily that way.
Advice?

Small rails should be able to track the drones no problem. What range you can effectively hit at is also determined by ammo load-outs. Have you tried loading Anti-matter rounds when they get in close? Also, what level of complex are you trying?

Rail guns, even small, will have problem with tracking at short distances. The best solution is to install a web so you can hit reliably. The range of the rail is often preferrable to the blasters damage, but with a web+blaster combo enemies goes down _fast_
With a web the enemy will slow down by 70-90% giving you the ability to decide fighting range, for example to close in for blasters, or simple slow them down so rails can hit.
I think that's the solution to your problem.

Like the guy above me said, get a webber. Its easy to get in your optimal if the enemy is moving at 25 m/s.

Best ship for drone complexes is the Triston- Scrap the hybrids and go for 2 standard missile launchers + light missiles. Tank it out and throw in a ballistic control system. Webbers in mids + an AB and you're good to go :D
