Why did I neglect to say that the main forum page was unnecessarily small as well as individual posts when this was all in beta?
Anyway, yeah, the front page text and forum icons seem to be much smaller than they have any need to be. It would be easier if they were bigger. A more intuitive way to get back to the forum section you arrived at a thread from would be nice too. For example, in this thread, why doesn't "EVE Information Portal" link back to the EVE Information Portal? |

I for one would appreciate the text being a bit bigger.
On a bog-standard 1080p resolution it barley takes up half and I have to zoom in several levels for it to be comfortable viewing on a 23" screen.
Other than that, looks good.. more feedback to come later. |

Are quotes still huge?
Edit: yes they are... I'm glad CUP is finally getting around to fixing the forums, but I really hope they plan to continue works. About the only major request I see of the players is font size (which even then we have complaints about scaling correctly on high res already). Most of the rest, things like fixing post count, were bugs discovered, not acting on player feedback. ,
There was a lot of feedback on the quotes tag for one. The like button, a LOT of players either called for its removal or a dislike button to at least make it useful. Email updates, picture, font color and size (yes yes, its all coming). I can't remember the full list, and I really can't be asked to type it out a third time, I'm sure someone will though. The new forums look better but are still missing about 75% of the features found in other modern forum software. |

Nobody seems to have said anything negative here yet (this must be a sign of satisfaction; well done), so I'd like to claim "FRIST PSOT!!1" on that front by saying that I really, really miss the old almost purply colour of the list of threads on the old forums, and the black backgrounds of posts. It doesn't quite feel like home, and it feels a bit more wall-of-text-y.
It also seems that because the char pictures are so much bigger, the minimum vertical height of each post is approx. 60% greater, so you can view less posts per screen. I think that one might be a bit more of a problem.
I guess my question is: are we going to have the ability to customise that kind of thing? I don't really want a range of themes or anything but some kind of 'Classic forums' view would be nice.
EDIT: I just thought I should add, in fairness, that getting people to use EVE Gate by integrating it with the forums is a really good idea and these new forums are generally a real step forward. Don't want y'all to think I'm being mean. |

Okay here's a little issue. Let's start at the beginning. I'm the kind of guy who likes to open thread(s) in new tabs. So usually I click on a topic with my middle mouse button and hey the thread opens in a new browser tab and everything is fine. Well... that works well so far however the thread also opens in the old window too. A bit redundant isn't it? Fix that please. Happens for forum sections too. So when I want to open let's say General Discussions it opens in a new tab and the old one.
While the text color / background contrast is nice though after reading a lot of text over an extended period of time it can stress the eyes a lot. Some slight increase in background/text contrast would be awesome as well.
Nonetheless... nice forums guys. In contrary to many of those whiners I actually like the idea of having a fixed width. Didn't look at it so far but I guess its 960 pixels right? Although I run at 1680x1050 I never liked websites that are primarily for the displaying text (i.e. forums, blogs etc.) that stretch over the entire width of the monitor. It makes reading long passages of text an incredible pain in the arse. |

The amount of forum settings is very limited.
Where is something like getting to select date and time format? I have no problem with the current format, but some prefer the mangled USA style. Another example could be addition of which weekday is is. Generally an option to pick a date format string of your own.
Selecting timezone (if you dont want UTC/evetime)
Where is the Block Images and other non-text content?
Where is the Don't show signatures? The "Signatures - show [ ]" seems not to apply to other peoples signatures, only your own, i.e whether to include yours in your post.
Where is the base fontsize option? (oh happy firefox: zooming with CTRL+mousewheel, optionally with 'zoom text only' checked) Really not a good situation we are in. Unzoomed, the text below this editing box, which displays "last 10 posts", is using a font where the capital letters are slightly less than 3mm tall. Counting pixels, a H in that window is 8 pixels high... The text in this window is not much better unzoomed. You can get away with that on a typewriter, but not on a computerdisplay at a reasonable distance from the screen.
Where are the avatar options? Large, small, OFF!
Why must it be impossible to use the forum without javascript enabled? You can read it, but not post, the reply/post buttons dont even show up if you dont have it on. Old forum delivered, if you could live without the style and smiley buttons working, this does not.
Why a bunch of other stuff, that is going to get a bit of time to prove itself.

Don't know why I'm bothering posting here since CCP has ignored almost every last bit of feedback on these forums during the 2 phases of testing. -However, clicking a thread title while not logged in takes you to the last page of the thread, regardless of whether or not you've read it. -giant tooltips on threads and subforums obscure the thread beyond them making it a pain in the ass to click anything. -godawful waste of of vertical space means more scrolling with an already beat up mousewheel. -there is much more I could ***** about but since every other customer complaint and suggestion has been summarily ignored, who cares? You're gonna do what you're gonna do regardless of how bad your players hate this piece of crap software. |

Where is the list of complains with 100+ items from the first "feedback" thread? This devblog is obvious copypaste from "test forum second version change notes". In two months NOTHING have changed. Only 10 major flaws was fixed. Why you need to write new forums from scratch if they are so primitive and their security is questionable? Where is the IGNORE button which is a basic one even for student written boards? Why we should post our feedbacks or test this forums if you even don`t react on feedback? You just ignored our feedback so the curses and torches are deserved

Yes, they can. You won't quit over it anyway. And even if you do, the next generation of players will grow up with the new forums anyway. As for the rest, yes that is a disappointment, but one can always light a candle for CCP's web cell understanding the difference between presentation design and usage design, at minimum for simple operational and commercial considerations (as more and more the EVE forum activity has been going down, with activity shifting to seperate online communities and independant media). After all, it is an element of the virtual world which exists for the customers, and not for the validation of "look I made an awesome design that looks good, what does it matter how it is used - by extension the bane of EVE's gameplay continuity).
So, iteration once again becomes a topic. But without much hope, as indeed virtually all the acknowledged feedback, was discarded. Interestingly, not just the technical angles, but primarily those design elements where people provided feedback on the basis of their daily use of the forums - and not how it looked as a picture.

That's called an awesome design, for making the presentation look good. This is not about actual use of forums. Similarly, it's a bit silly now that the forums are here in EVE Gate, but the actual site with commonly used things like Customer Support, Account Management and such are now fully seperate.

The forum (and EveGate in general) is alive much the same way a brain dead patient in a vegetative state is alive. It's there, it works, but don't expect much action.
Performance on both Gate and the Forums is painfully slow. I put up with EveGate because it's a convenient way of accessing my mail when not at my home computer. However, I tend to avoid using it because it's so damn slow to load up anything. The old forums performed remarkably well considering the quantity of data it served up. This one is painful to use.
Please, work on either server performance or untangling the spaghetti code. There's no reason any modern piece of forum software, whether built in-house or purchased, should run this slow. |

I'll second that comment. The look and feel is really nice. I like the color scheme. It's easy on the eyes and has good contrast (a plus for me due to color blindness).
As for performance, I know it's not my connection, as I have a lightning fast connection at work (where I am now) and a 30 Mbps connection at home that actually delivers its advertised speed. EveGate has always been slow for me regardless of where I access it. And I see the same issues on the forum. |

Nice forum, good job! Just a quick question: why do you translate the game in German and Russian and don't offer a forum for this languages? |

Was going to suggest turning off the images, but they are using table cells with very large minimum fixed heights, so it doesn't have much of an effect. Well, okay, each individual posting is its own table, each stacked on top of the next. (For any pro Web devs out there, you have my permission to snarf your cola right about now.) In other words, in spite of the pretty pictures, the code itself is adhering to seriously outdated standards.
Beyond the boxes being too tall for short posts, I love the look. The code though would have someone on my carpet for a serious talking to.
I think I shall now poke around to find out what all those canned Ajax libraries they are using do. They may explain some of the quirkies of opening forums in new tabs if the page is not really grabbing new pages, but making Ajax calls and then refreshing the URL to make it look like a page call.

Second complaint. Why is it when I click a thread I am dumped half way through the thread? For example clicking on a thread for the first time can dump me on page 8 out of 11.

I'm really glad that CCP went ahead and launched the new forums despite laundry lists of (easily) 50+ bugs being unaddressed. The above statement is also factual and accurate. |

Where's the option to disable (or have smaller) portrait images?
Whilst Avatars might be your new, current 'shiny' project CCP - I do not come to the forums to view pictures of people's characters. Having a huge chunk of your screen taken up by the portrait is ridiculous. |

Team Occam's razor seems to be living in their own alternate reality, so let me tell you - THESE NEW FORUMS _S U C K_ The performance is terrible, amount of wasted space is staggering, the readability is very bad, the whole "like" button thingy is a stupid idea, bbcodes aren't fully implemented, not to mention the fact that 90% of the feedback from both testing phases was blatantly ignored.
Another half-finished release from CCP! Way to go! |

Your a d*uche - shut up.
Forums are nice work CCP - they look great, good performance on my end, so no issues there, and lots of options.
Me likey.
I would suggest you add a button which says *You are a D*uche* or "Herp Derp Alert!" for posters like RandomToon987 so I can tell everyone else what a complete moron he is, other than just typing it. |

OK, what the hell is going on here?
As usual, I always visit the Forums first before I log into the game. This time I was locked out.
At first I thought maybe my Internet connection wasn't working but hey, I was viewing the Forums.
Then I thought maybe my eve account had expired so I checked and no, still lot's of time on it.
Then I thought maybe I was banned from the Forums, but wouldn't I receive an EMAIL or pop-up message with that information?
Then I decided to check the Information Portal, saw the sticky post about New Forums being alive. After reading the Dev Blog about it, I clicked the link, lo and behold I ended up here at the New Eve Forums, came to this Forum section and thread and after reading it, decided to ask a few questions.
I didn't realize I was in Eve Gate, probably due to the fact that I had only checked it out once when it was first added and never had the need to use it again after that. Anyway, I'm looking for the reply button and all I see is Join, Evelopedia and Forums so I click the Join (Thinking that's how you log in) and ended up at the Eve Download page. Went back to Forums and redid the whole dance again.
After a while I noticed way at the top in small text 'Home', which I clicked and took me to a page where I saw 'LOG IN' at, Geez Louise . After waiting for it to load up my character, I came back here and wow, there's the reply button.

I don't know, maybe I'm still half asleep or still feeling the effects of a bad hangover but I can seriously say that I am not a happy camper. My first thought is - New Forum is not user friendly. It is slow loading, there's wasted space on the sides of the thread, larger page layout with less text space showing. WTF is up with listing the last 10 posts (In reverse order)? No need for that. Another thing, why list 'Likes received' at the top? I don't care if someone else likes or dislikes what I have to say. I pay for an account so I have the right to speak my mind without being judged or rated. We get that already from other players in the form of troll posting.
I'm sure there's other things I'll find but I'm gonna stop ranting now and ask some very important questions which I would like CCP to answer.
How do I check on, edit and or answer my forum post - Faction Standing Repair Plan ?
According to your Dev Blog, it states all the posts in the old Forum are out floating lost in Cyberspace. Since nobody can access those posts, how do we transfer them to this NEW Forum?

This is serious biz which needs to be addressed asap.

Here goes my first round of thoughts about these new forums, from a web developer point of view :
Usability / logic
- The middle click button opening the link in the same window is highly annoying, to say the least. This is something you should never, ever, ever do : preventing users from using their browser like they want to. I cannot stress enough how much irritating this is (not to mention I really fail to see the point of using a javascript call to open a link).
- The "Forums" link, in the main menu, should go in the left navigation, with other EVE Gate internal links, instead of staying in the right menu, which looks dedicated to external links. It should also, of course, looks the same as the others internal links.
- The text preview popup, triggered by hovering a thread link (and link only), should always be located at the same place on the page, regardless of the link length, to avoid the messy feeling when you go down with your mouse above each thread.
- The same preview popup should also be delayed a bit before it appears. One second of hovering should be enough to make sure the user is willingly keeping his mouse over the link.
- Post titles should always bring you to the OP. There's an icon link beforehand to go the last unread post, and pages links as well to quickly access different part of the thread.
- The forum settings hidden in the Profile settings is not exactly straightforward. Maybe a shortcut, next to the Forum Rules and Archives links on top of the forum page would help.
- The "Expand to quick reply to the thread" text somehow suggest I should click there in order to expand the quick reply block, which is, of course, not the case. Please avoid such imperative forms outside of Call-to-Action zones.
- Clicking on the "Preview" button should bring me to the post preview section of the page, because I want to preview my huuuuuuuge post when clicking that button.
- The text contained in a list should be aligned vertically with the start of the first line, and keep the bullet point alone to increase scan-ability in text-heavy lists (like this one).
- The min-height of posts is a bit too much. I think 64px avatars and 100px min-height for posts would be a good compromise.
- The width of the forum posts, on the other hand, is perfectly fine. 500px max for text lines, otherwise it becomes unreadable.
- Extra bonus : The "EVE Technology Lab" should really go under the "EVE Technology and Research Center" category, where it belongs. Things in this forum are often highly experimental anyway.
Features & bugs
- An ignore list would be a must. Not that I don't like you guys.
- The "Remaining characters" counter on top of the message box is reset at 6k when I preview a post, and wait for me to edit the text again before updating (setting focus to the textarea without editing does not refresh the counter).
I'll make another test pass later, but please, for the love of whatever viking god you believe in, get rid of that link-opener javascript. It's driving me nuts. |

Someone over in the 1.4 issues thread beat me to making time to poke through the all the Ajax. Apparently the page is trying to phone home every 15 seconds regardless of whether anything has changed, most probably bogging down the servers far more than necessary.
For more details of the study in coding and network inefficiency, give it a read through over there.
Though it would explain why roughly every 15 seconds the page steals the scroll bar away from me and resets, setting nested scrolling windows back to the top again, making things below the fold very hard to read. |

While his language and behaviour is terrible, the observation that the team persists in merely their own perception is unfortunately accurate, even if only by perception. But hey, that defines reality. We had two public testing rounds, with very constructive feedback, tons of it actually. During those rounds, and between the last one and delivery, it is a bit of a mystery what was actually done, since roughly 90% of constructive, well argumented and managable feedback was effectively ignored.
I'm sure the argument could be made of time constraints and resources. But we saw that delivery has been delayed several times already, just as we have seen with Incursions how such delays can actually be positive, just like split delivery turned out to be. So why not take the time to build for the commercial perspective. Style is one thing, but it is the substance that is the extension of gameplay here. And in that regard, the strict application of style over substance is not a good thing. Especially since style and substance are so easy to combine, with full adherence to usability, as well as common and current standards of online media and communities.
