I'm a new player (3 days olds) interested in staying around for the long haul. I've purchased and trained all of the learning skills (analytical mind, etc.) to rank 1. I'm just curious when would be a good time to start hitting the learning skills hard.
I'll have Caldari Frigate 3 tonight and I have one of each frigate to play around with. Would you reccomend me training the learning skills now, or waiting until I can get and pilot a good cruiser or mining barge?

Train them to 3/4 at first. Huge boost for a small time investment. Hold off with lvl5 and advanced until a few months in.

I started with the learning skills during my 14 day trial. Trained 'em all up to level 4 before really branching out to anything else. Pushed Analytical Mind, Instant Recall, Iron Will, Learning, and Spatial Awareness up to lvl IV really before doing anything else. Never did empathy for some reason... got to get back to that.
There are many different ways to go, this is just what I did. It helped down the line reducing traning times for other skills.

Theoretically, training them up all the way would give you the most benefit... though it all depends on how long you plan to play EVE... for many people, training the advanced skills to level 5 won't pay off as they won't be in the game that long...
The suggestion of training the basic ones to level 4 is sound... in addition, depending on what you want to do, you probably can get away not training charisma at all...
If you plan to stay in the game for a long time, I would push the advanced skills to level 4 fairly early in your career as all later training will go faster... but of course that will mean you will have less skills that actually allow you to fit things...
it's all a matter of balance...

I trained the attributes to 3, learning to 4, and have spent my next month and a half learning the skills I need to enjoy the game--combat, mining, hauling, and a good selection of ships frigate through battlecruiser. Then at roughly the end of month 2 I am going to go back and spend about 1.5 months getting learning V, and the secondary attribute skills up to IV (except charisma).
I think this will work well because it gives me lots of play up front, and the learning skills for my long term plan (probably 2 years). If you are in for the long haul, some of the skills take 30+ days, and the learning skills really pay off.

I trained the basic learning skills to 2/3 in the first few days, then trained some very basic skills and rushed intel and mem to adv 4. Then I spent a few weeks training mostly intel/mem skills and only after that took per/wil to adv 4. Again trained some skills (int/mem/per/wil) and finally took cha to adv 4. Took me about 5 months before I was done with learning skills, but I've trained very little skills without the appropriate attributes fully trained up.

I started out training what I wanted to play with, and working on learning skills as I was learning to fly what I'd already skilled up for. I finally finished up the advanced skills as far as I'm taking them 9 months later. I'm now a year old with 15M SP; another player who started the same day burned on learning skills right out of the gate, and she now has 17M SP. In another year I assume we'll still be 2M apart, so the percentage difference due to my slower start will keep decreasing.
I think my way worked just fine: play, enjoy, and do learning skills now and then until you get serious... then max them out.
Of course, if elite learning skills come out, it would be well to be ready to start studying them.

Install EVEMon, pick your short term skills to get into the game and have fun and then only train the learning ones it recommends. When they are done, pick your medium to long term skills and then train those learning skills it recommends. Then win EVE.

Assuming you are a genuine new character (not some alt), you'll be training known skills for a while before you afford to purchase all learnings. Like it or not, but mission running is the only decent alternative for new characters... mining is too slow and not so profitable, don't even think about manufacture or resales (no capital). So, you have to get the needed skills for a mission runner. Out of all, kill missions give most ISK, so you guess where I'm heading with this reasoning.
As soon as you bought one learning skill (memory first, then intelligence, then learning, only then the other three), level it up to L2 ASAP, or even L3 if you have nothing else interesting at the moment. Having L3 in all 6 of them is enough for the time being... that is, until you manage to run all L1 kill missions without a problem in a frigate.
Next stop, get them all up to L4. It could take a few days, but you can spend the time doing missions. Train for a cruiser and cruiser-sized weapons. And because you have enough money saved, and enough standing from running L1 missions, you can finally get your cruiser into a few L2 missions to increase your profit even further. Diversify your skills, get decent engineering/electronics/navigation skills on one side, gunnery/missiles on the other side. Heck, Social, Connections and Negotiations would be nice too... Science L4 and Cybernetics L2 come to mind as interesting also (you should be receiving implants from storyline missions or agent rewards).
If you're already well past 1 mil SP (and have at least L3 cruiser), now would be a good time (if you didn't do it already) to train for battlecruisers... and take one into the (hopefully) available L3 missions. Depending on race and setups, this can be sooner (Caldari/Ferox) or later (Amarr/Prophecy) for "safe" completion of L3 kill missions.
NOW, and only now, is a good time to start with L5 basic learnings and L4 advanced learnings. Training L5 advanced learnings is almost never a good idea, unless you really feel you need nothing else to train for the time being. __ Always question everything. Including yourself. |

The rule of thumb I'd use, is keep your learning skills the highest level ones. So before training anything to 3, get the related learning skills to 3, etc.
5s take a long time, but lead to the advanced learning (which give an additional 3 points in a matter of days, and a fourth after not too much time more)

truthfully?? I would look into the type of character you want to be and then check out your stats at creation. Not having the right attributes can be a big bummer when you go into training the skills for that character.
Take the learnings in steps as you need them. you will need them but getting them over a couple months is not going to kill you time wise.
again check into your stats at creation since you have just started this is the best time to make sure your stats are right for the job you want to do.

Learnings to basic 3 - ASAP Learnings to basic 4 - Train them overnight, train functional skills while you play
When you have all the skills you want to level 4
THEN do your adv learnings to 4

This is a bad suggestion and will cost our dear poster a lot of skillponits.
EVEMon only suggests learning skills when it will shorten the current plan you have. If you have just 2 months in there at a time, it will never suggest that you put the advancaed learning skills in.
Here's my suggestion: remember this fact: the amount of SP you gain per minute is: [skills primary attribute] + 1/2 [skills secondary attribute]
That should provide you with sufficient motivation so taht you don't put them off for too long. You want perc, will, mem, int at advanced lvl4 and learning at 5.
Since you're still very new and it's not too late to start over, if you want a combat character remember: Perception is most importnat 2X more important than all other attributes. Memory is next most important followed by willpower and Intelligence (although these last 3 are all quite close). Charisma is junk.
If you want to choose the race that has the best possible stats, it's Caldari, Archura, Monk, and then you put +3 perception and +2 memory.

Edited by: Kogame Tomika on 19/10/2006 19:25:17 Okay, I know that I am new here, and am still learning the curves, but so many people hack on Charisma without ever wondering what type of play the other person is planning. If you are a mission runner, social skills are almost invaluable. Training Connections to level two takes about 3 hours. And gives you a huge bonus to standings, far more than you would gain via pure mission running. Gets you into Level 2 missions almost immediately. Negotiations is also a very nice benefit to have early, as you will get proportionally more pay with it trained up to even level 3.
And then there are the Trade skills. I trained these almost immediately, especially, Trade, Retail, Accounting, Broker Relations, Procurement and Marketing. Because of this, in three days I was over 10 million ahead of my friend who started within hours of me, and did nothing but run missions and rat.
So Charisma is invaluable... to a certain type of player. Its probably not quite as important as, say Perception (training ships takes one hella long time) but its not "junk." It all depends on your play style.

Train learning skills when you will be able to have fun playing eve with your current set of skills for awhile. When that is, I dont know, depends on the person. Some people it is right of the bat. Was about 3 months before I started working towards advanced learnings. ______________________________________________

I got them all right away... I had something like 2.2 mill SP total with 1.8 mill in learning. I didn't mind getting them like most people seem to. Plus, it's fun having just 1 million SP less than my friend who started playing 5 months before me but waited about 8 months in to get learning skills.

Looking back at when I was 3 days in...the best advice I could have been given would have been to kill off my charecter and get one with different attributes.....
forget what everyone says about balance and diffenet attributes leading down different paths, trust me....by far the mostly valuable attribute is Percepetion, get a charecter with the highest starting perception attribute and you will be laughing all the way to the carrier

Get all the 6 learning skills to basic 3 ASAP. Then train other skills until you can make good isk in whatever your choosen playing style is. Then train the learning skills to Advanced 3/4 while still being able to make good isk. ------------------------------------------------ Just because your not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you! |

to repeat what many have said here... All basic to lvl 4, then in a little while, when you got isk you get the advanced and bump them to 4, doesnŠt take very long. Tehn you should know what your ideas are about EVE in general and if you think you want to play it for more then 2 months. When you've bin in here for some time like me and know you are not quiting in the next year, then it is worth it to train them all (or selected depending on training plan) to lvl 5. helps out in long term, not short term. I got both my chars to 5 in all and no regrets there as I use it all alot.

19d, 2h, 18m, and 12s until Caldari Industrial V is finished. Watch out, EVE. You're about to get HAULED. |
