For the few of you who haven't been paying attention the last few years, EA is completely, and totally EVIL.
As further proof, as if we really needed any, they are including spyware in BF2142. The spyware will monitor your activities, where you visit on the web, programs you use, and forward it to advertising companies.
Read more here.
So: who's gonna buy BF2142 now?

So does that mean if I visit pron sites I'll see ads with hot girl on girl action? I'm okay if its animated gifs or something.
No, but on a serious note. I'm now not buying their game. And thats some major bull**** they're pulling. We need to get the word out, so that they have no choice but to change....you know what ****'em. They'll be lucky if even bother to buy Spore. And I'm not a bandwagon jumping kind of person either. I'm not buying another thing with EA on it. Too many other games and game companys out there that I can pick and choose who I spend my money on. *shrug* ****'em

My list of companies that I won't buy stuff from just increased.
Too bad if that was the company that was releasing spore, because that's a game that I actually intended to buy.

Wasn't planning to buy bf2142 anyway, after they screwed up so badly with patch 1.3 for BF2. How could they ever build a new game, with the same engine, that has problems that aint being fixed first before making a new game.
EA is totally bull****ing its own market. I have seen it happen with Novalogic before, now its happening to BF. Its sad to see that those dumb**** americans at the top only think in dollars. If I invest this I will get % more in return. Its sad but that the truth.

I think there is some concern in all the wrong places on this one. It's a data miner to report traffic habits to best determine what ads will show up in game. I'm in market research and we do a lot of advertising consulting and unfortunately, this is where a lot of advertising will be going due to the sheer amount of awareness it can bring a brand. A lot of software companies are looking for dynamic ways of advertising and the one EA is using is looking to be the most successful and there are a lot of companies that are toying with this idea.
EA doesn't care if you goto www.ilovemysistersbigole*******.com. All they care about is if you are surfing site that heavily refrence realworld commercial goods. This allows EA to go to Nike, Ford, Kraft, etc and show them their penetration as well as audience.
Many of you may not be aware of this but there are trackers at virtually every website you go to and a lot of websites use those refrences as ideal places to advertise. The only difference here is it is done more efficiently.
And if you think EA is going to collect personal data and sell it off, you are crazy as that would be a serious breach of privacy. Besides, if they wanted to do that, they would have done so already as you have to enter in a valid e-mail to play the game.
You could also kill the process that collects the data. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

Its been done in the past, remember those client cards u get in every store u frequent visit? They monitor everything u buy, and then sell info to advertising company's. This is just the same, and I hate EA for that. Alot of kids play BF they all get this disgusting ****, and adverts. Its not the kids that are victem of this, but the parents because the kids want to have what they see in the adverts. Are atleast there sense of products might involve to some named more expensive products.
EA doesn't give anything about the people who play the game, aslong they generate bucks for them.

Not quite sure what you're talking about here.
The ads in game aren't going to fly down and blind the person playing the game. The will fall into Billboards and areas where advertising in the real world is expected, similar to COH. This is the equivilant of driving down the road and seeing a billboard with a brand or product on it. You are being a little dramatic about what this will do. I think having real world advertisements in a game like BF would be pretty cool and add a bit of real world depth to it. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

Although I see how you are correct in the observation of people being overly paranoid, I also see that your slant on the good of these dataminers as being a little less than objective. I'm sure from a marketing view that this would be an effecient and valuable tool but, from a comsumer perspective it is way beyond the bounds of what the product should be offering. A game should not be collecting data on a totally unrelated use of someones pc.
I have been with the Bf franchise from the start and I'm sad to say they have lost me on this too. Btw(Forgotten Hope mod was the most fun for me)

I doubt there would be anything wrong with killing the process and I'm sure someone will make an app to make sure it stays domant.
It is a related use. Its for dynamic advertising. The only reason they are collecting data is to show to advertisers how much penetration and awareness EA can get into different areas of the market.
I'm not going to argue that EA is a sack of douchebags. I haven't liked them since thay tried their hostile takeover of Ubisoft, however, this type of advertising will become more and more common very soon and you are either going to be stuck playing indie games or reading books because video game production is going up fast and companies need a way to fund it and of course still pay themselves well. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

You're kidding yourself. People will not let advertising get in the way of playing a good or decent game.
Also, without the advertising you will see game prices go up to cover the production costs. If you would rather pay $80 for a game without the advertising, I think a safe assumption would be that you would be in the minority.
If them tracking all the websites I goto will help keep games at current costs, then let them scan my travels through the web. I serious doubt we'll see a Bang Brothers ad in a game anytime soon. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

You can think of me what you will. But at the end of the day, if companies, who have real estate to advertise, do not make money through advertising, then the consumer will absorb the cost. Spyware is not a prerequisite for advertising, and if you need adverts in the game then you're doing something wrong.
It's not about the game companies actually needing the money as much as it's about the advertisers seeing an unexploited market.

Hey you know what, I've participated in my share of RL marketing groups. From new type of hashbrowns to even taste testing a new formula of beer. You're in marketing, guess whats missing? The money, when I do test marketing for someone they pay me. Yes I got paid $60 to taste something like 10 different beer flavors over about a half an hour.

And you know what the difference is. MY CHOICE! If I decide to goto "Ilikebigboobs" thats my choice. What EA's doing isnt. What they are doing is amounting to making me purchase a game so they can sell my surfing habits to advertisers, when I'm not even playing their game. And thats my point. And even though digitalOverdose is trying to say its no big deal, it is. And dont let him convince you otherwise. If you pruchase the product and there is a disclaimer telling you what is going on, it is right. They are not breaking any laws and they are not doing anything unethical. They are collecting data so they can determine what to advertise in game. This is not a focus group, taste test or a two week trial period, therefore you are not going to get paid. Your reimbursement is going to be a steady price on video games as the cost of making those games continually rises.
If you think it's none of their business to track where you are going, hit ctl+alt+del and kill the process. Do you think you're going to get an email from EA asking you, "so how about those big boobs?" Never
What they are going to do is look at a mass population and determine what the most popular sites are that they can pull in to advertise for. It's a bit pompus to think they really care about what websites you, as an individual, are going to.
But again, you can either kill the process, miss out on a game or just relax and have fun. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

Do you have any idea how many qualitative and quantitative groups and studies I have been involved with regarding this issue? Generally when people are sat down and clearly hear what the "spyware" will be doing, from a reputable company like ADOBE, we see that most people are not as concerned because they have been educated on the purpose.
The "spyware" you are comparing this too is not a far comparison. Your comparing this to near viral tracking apps that are malicious and root for email addresses and other personal info. That is not what EA's, Adobe's and Norton's "spyware" does and any comparison to it leads to speculation and false fears.
You, like most others here, obviously can't see past your eyebrows on this topic. I have sat in the groups and I understand what is going on and have seen hundreds of people ,that make up a geographically dispersed nation both in America and Europe (England and France), and accept the "spyware" after understanding what it's purpose is. You wont convince me that this way to get into advertising is wrong because I have physical proof in my studies that it works and it continues to test well in the general population.
P.S. We also calibrated these test by interviewing computer savvy groups and those groups showed positive results to this info gathering too. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

All right, please explain it to me as you would explain it to them and we'll see if you succeed or not.

I'm the mediator, a rep from the respective company is the one that layout though the jist of my posts in this thread layout the basics. These companies do not care about individuals. They look for trends like 3% of the users/players visit an NFL site at least twice a day, "Great, 3% of our base is roughly 1.3 million people in the US. Bob, lets see if the NFL would like to advertise the playoffs with us in our game." That would obviously be more for EA's case. Adobe would use their tracking for the exact opposite. They would look to see what communities it's users venture into and then they would advertise themselves there.
Back to EA a moment. One of our recent clients involded in the gaming market is looking at doing something similar in their upcomming game. They sent over some early projections but based off of our volumetrics, they will make almost as much selling advertisement space in the game as they would on the game it's self which is planned to be used on future game development.
While you may think all the money goes into the top tier of the company, it actually goes towards production. A ton of money is saved by selling off game world real estate. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.
