Harek, That is great to hear that it worked out and picking up another language is always great as well. I am also in the process of trying to learn JSL (Japanese Sign Language); I find sign language in general very beautiful and much more expressive than any other language.
The community here is great and very supportive of it's members. We are all here together and want to help each other. (Even if it means showing love with guns in-game, but that's another story)
I do hope CCP learns from this and tries to take more effect to make more adaptations for people with disabilities.

I'm sure hiring a interpreter wouldn't cost that much for them; it would be worth it so those that can't hear are not left out; I know how depressing it can be to be in these settings and not knowing what's going on because you can't keep up with what's going on.
Singled out those comments:
WoW has *at least* 16 times more subscribers and Blizzcon attracts over 50,000 people (i think the last one was 70-80k?). Blizz' "fanfest" is literally 50 times the size of CCP's. I think it's rather unfair to compare the two.
Then there's the interpreter: They would have to find someone who would be willing (and able!) to interpret EVE specific terminology (and other rather technical stuff) in quite a lot of different English accents in real time.
For 6-8 hours a day.
For 3 days.
I'm not sure what people think this costs, but this can easily go into the quadruple digits, if you can even find such a person. At best, you'd get the cliffnotes version of what's going on.
While i am supportive, i have to play devil's advocate here, and there's a lot of costs involved for people trying to make it possible. I'm glad the German interpreter is working out, but please don't be too one-sided on this issue. It may seem cruel, but i think it's very rude to expect special treatment like that and also expecting that it's an utterly trivial thing to organize, especially with any sense of entitlement.
If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

From what I've been told there are around 24-27 sign linguests in Iceland. None of whichwhich are ASL fluent. As somesomeon else has said you then have the issue of people not being aware of eve terminology adding to the difficulty.
To have made things easier the large scripted talks would have been needed by the interpreter before hand to practice but also fully understand the talk.
But either way we are trying our best to help this individual. I just wanted to add a few facts to the discussion.

awesome to hear. I live in an area with a rather large deaf community, and can remember seeing deaf interpreters at concerts and various other events. and on that note I wouldn't be too surprised to see that there is some overlap with the EVE player base. As far as the overall costs of fanfest I can't imaging getting an ASL interpreter or two would be all that expensive. Although I don't know much about signlanguage and know even less about the differences between the various kinds. this thread alone seems to include American, English, German, and Icelandic.

a) artificially constructed to match a spoken language to begin with
b) isn't really that old as far as languages go or old even as a concept
c) doesn't evolve in a way that normal languages do

Because different spoken languages have different grammars, not just different words. It's easier for people to learn sign language when it shares grammar with the language that they're familiar with.
Remember sign language isn't just for deaf people, it's for people who want to talk to deaf people as well.

It's such a hideously amateurish event I'm surprised anyone even bothers to turn up. Watching the hosts on the stream yesterday sent my Cringe-O-Meter into meltdown. |

Not defending CCP here but what do most people expect regarding the professionalism of FF streams? Yes sure, they're meh, but what you guys want, BBC and CNN employees or Bill Clinton doing the show there? Yes, even after so many years...I think FF is for people getting the chance to meet some of the guys that keep ensuring eve is dying since 2003 and meet corp mates and whatnot, but apparently people are expecting too much. Sure, the prices aren't cheap.
As for the sign language help. CCP must mention whether that is present or not before you purchase the tickets, it appears they did try and are still trying to come up with a solution so I hope it works out for you, but please remember that if something like this isn't written somewhere, it most likely won't happen.
As for CCP's communication regarding contacting them on behalf of Eve Fanfest tickets and sisters of eve spouse program, there I must agree, CCP were absolutely horrible. I wrote many months in advance regarding questions about that that were not mentioned, I contacted them 5x via their contact information, they never bothered to reply to me, not even once. Therefore, I decided not to go. I to this day do not understand why provide a contact form if people don't reply, might as well not provide it at all. |

many an FC has had to do this in fleet. it's not hard.
so seeing as the OP is able to read english the solution isn't that feckin hard now is it.
sit beside him and type on your laptop what the presenter is saying.
not a perfect solution but better than nothing.
it will even work both ways if the OP wants to ask a question. |

I am deaf too and can understand your frustration. Personally, I think you're nuts to have tried -- the accents and crowd noise would have killed me. Kudos for giving it a shot.
There are a lot of things CCP could do (or any event organizer), loop systems, CART, captioning, etc. it's frustrating to feel like the only guy in the room that can't understand, and I wish more people would take us into account.

to the OP of this thread im sorry to hear.
We have a deaf person in corp, but we always make sure to have someone in fleet, typing out in capital letters in fleet with all the commands, and short summearies on whats going on on comms when we are just sitting around on a gate or something. has worked out nicly in corp and most guys are happy to help out that way.
But yes it is very unprofessional of ccp, after an ongoing conversation over time, to not be able to provide any assistance,... |

You do realize this is Iceland we're talking about  If there are interpreters then they will be trained in Icelandic... not in English. And flying in a foreign interpreter who is specialized in English, no offence to OP, but that's not worth the cost or the effort for just one person.

Just a thought on the cost of an interpreter. Now bear with me here as it might seem like a slight tangent.
1. We have voice to text
2. we have databases
3. we have 3D holograms that can talk, dance and sing.
Mesh these this things together and you could have a multilingual database interpreter that takes spoken word and has the 3D hologram doing signing in the language of the viewer. |

As a hearing person I'm a full supporter of the deaf and hearing impaired community. 100% and all the way!
While I understand Iceland is a smaller county and probably lacks any ASL interpreters we should always, always try to find way to include everyone. There is something wrong we we dont try to do our best to include everyone in what's going on. Whether it's attending FF or playing EVE online.
I would love to see CSM and CCP work together and develop a blueprint on how we can make the game more accessible. I know it will not only benefit deaf players but hearing players who often have to turn the volume down at night because people are sleeping in the room (I've heard people mentioning this on coms several times already).
I've also taken a semester of ASL and it is based on American words. Some people think it's a universal sign language and it's not. I encourage everyone to take a class when possible. As an avid traveler I often do not speak a word of the native language and actually communicated with facial expressions and hand gestures. Something I picked up while trying to learn ASL. I remember asking for direction and not understand the person response but based on their hand gestures and turning their hand left, right, straight and listening for numbers I was able to find my way more than once. So there are useful application in learning ASL.
So I stand by you Harek and will fight with you and not give up as well. You have allies and were here to stay! |

Well that sucks to hear, i would have personally made my own arrangements, you could probably look in to doing something yourself for next fanfest and invite other hearing impaired players along as kind of a group thing, would really show CCP how its done, and who doesn't like doing things better than CCP can :P
That being said its a shame you felt it was such a let down, i hope you manage to sort something out for a future event, i remember my trip to fanfest was quite the blast, although i was more there to meet people than for the actual presentations, we hope to see you posting your success story next year :) |

Could you get someone to fast-type the words on a screen as they are spoken? Might be an easier alternative ?

Yer Fanfest has been going downhill for years,
I only go because its an official PL meetup thing and most of the PL people only use harpa as a wifi hub and don't even bother going to any of the roundtables and only go to the main things in the main hall so we can put the PL flags up and shout JEFF RADER when they play the "This is eve" vid |
