My ol faithfull Optiquest 17" has finally died on me, so I'm looking to replace it with a 20"+ widescreen LCD, of which I have narrowed it to these two candidates:
Gateway 21" LCD, model FPD2185W
Dell 20.1" LCD, model 2007W
I'm leaning toward the Gateway, as it is slightly bigger; on the other hand, the Dell is a bit cheaper. Feature wise, they are about equivalent and both monitors are editor's choice just about everywhere they are reviewed.
Anyone got some feedback on these monitors? How do they fare in Eve?
And what about the banding issue discussed here , should I be concerned about this?
Note: I still have my Dell P1110 21" CRT, and plan to run both monitors - but not while running Eve (nope, there is no such thing as too much desktop )
(please, none of "I'm using [other monitor] and it's the bestest in the world" - it took me long enough to narrow it to these two!)
Tx!

I can't speak for the Dell, but I've seen the Gateway in person, and it's nothing short of gorgeous, only thing to top it is the most recent line of Viewsonic LCDs, the ones with the shiny black bezel, and those don't rotate, have PIP, or the USB hub. |

I have the Dell 2005W FP. Incredible monitor in DVI mode. Its the same LCD panel as the 20" wide Apple monitor with better electronics behind it. The Gateway looks to be the same exact panel as well, but I can't speak for their electronics. ---- EVE-Central.com - Cross-region market view and trade finder |

I did.. I went to my local computer superstore and checked out all the lcds.. anything under 2ms was crap for games.. though I'll admit they did look very nice for static images.. better than my crt..

Your average LCD nowadays produces very little ghosting, so little that it doesn't really bother you. The difference between 2 and 7ms is tbh like, nothing. Other things are more important imo, like viewing angles - nothing gets up my armpits like having to sit directly in front of the screen to be able to see proper colours. My advice is throw all the numbers out the window and go down to your store and watch the screens in action.

Check out the Samsung 20 and 21 widescreens. Very nice. I also like the viewsonics mentioned above. The gateway wins hands-down for its flexibility, but I think you would do better to look at some of the other options.
If you are really feeling sexy, head to the TV section and pick up one of the Samsung 31inch LCD monitors. I have a samsung 41 that I use for home theatre, and I would think the 31 would be just fantastic for gaming.

Although Gateway on the whole do make shoddy product, the monitor in question is just fantastic, well worth the money, I have one and don't regret the purchase for a second. I suspect its a Samsung screen with a gateway rebadge :)

And one more thing - the price difference between 20 and 21 is gigantic. Do yourself a favor and buy *2* 20 inch monitors instead of a 21. Once you go dual-screen, you will never, NEVER compute any other way. I have one regular and one widescreen monitor. I play EVE on the widescreen and browse the forums on the other monitor at the same time. Also, you photoshop junkies will like widescreen as well - one screen for your workspace, and the other for palettes, windows etc.

I have the Dell 2007 20' widescreen and its absolutely gorgeous!! Usually i wouldnt recommend a Dell product but this monitor is a dream. They even rate the screen at 16ms when infact its closer to 6ms. I cant say enough good things about this monitor, add in the fact that its amazing value for money and you really cant go wrong....
Also, i placed the order on a Monday and it arrived the Tuesday the day after.... now if that isnt good service i dont know what is!

I'm going to agree with Dark. I've seen nothing but rave reviews for the Viewsonic 2025. Would be the one I'd get if I were upgrading.

I've got a Westinghouse 19" widescreen now that is great for a cheap LCD. A little backlight bleed at the edges that I never noticed after the first couple days. Other than that nice and clear w/ good color and only $220.

Anyone have the banding issue with their lcd in Eve? (ie: smooth gradients are not that smooth and 'band', check a sun in Eve)
Rakeris: yeah, 30" would be uber, but waaaaaay too expensive.
Scorpio: about them 30"+ TV screens, well, same as above, outta my league cash-wise... And for the price diff 20" vs 21" is only about $100 for my two candidates. I heard the Samsungs have some light bleading at the egdes, so i decided to rule them out. And I will be dual-screening, with my 'ol Dell (trinitron) 21" CRT 8) (been dual-screening for years now, can't go back )
As for the Viewsonic: (taken from PC Magazine's review) "Though not the best for gaming or action-packed movies, the ViewSonic VX2025wm delivers great image quality and is one of the best deals around for anyone who wants to trade up to a 20-inch widescreen LCD monitor."
True, the Viewsonic fares pretty good, but the same review site lists both the Gateway and Dell as Editor's Choice, and that's why they made my shortlist, and the Viewsonic did not. Also the Viewsonic's stand is adjustable in _zero_ ways. Oh, wait, it's got tilt, no? Also, it's only $50 cheaper than the Gateway, but has none of the extras (which I will admitedly probably never use, but, meh, me likes it! )

Very enlightening, Dark. FYI, almost every high end LCD 'montor' DO have USB ports. USB ports on keyboards are much less common.

This is hard concidering both companies are absolute garbage for servive and delivery. Therefore, we will have to look at quality of product.
The Dell monitor is much better, if they actually send you what you ordered, not damaged, it will last you a very, very long time. An office I work at they all have 21'' widescreen's in their programming department, they look fantastic.

um im 27 and i dont buy candy and my montor does tilt but as for hight adjustment i just make a riser stand or i could go out and with my extra cash i saved on my power bill go out and buy an lcd stand that would let me move it around everyware i do have to agree with you on the movies part i tryed watching season 2 of bsg and it was too damned dark but thats what my tv is for anyway so ya ------------------------------------ darklegionca - One name.
