Hello guysÆnÆgals..
The other day on my way home from work I went into HMV to pick up a couple things, and seemly noticed the Anime section, with most notably Dark ShikariÆs big blue robot that he has plastered all over his sigÆs on one of the DVD boxÆs. Seeing as I usually see this robot when I visit the boards, as he seems to get into a lot of threads, I wandered what all the fuss was about and got a copy of it just to see what it was like. Now iv never been a fan of Anime or Manga before so was intrigued to see what it was like, and quiet surprisingly I really enjoyed it. I knew it isnÆt always a good idea to pick up a series half way through however itÆs the only one they had ôGhost in the Shell û Stand Alone Complexö so I thought I would get a taster. Most surprisingly I can remember seeing a player created EVE advert with the blue robots in, and thought that the child like voice it had was just a joke, so it came as a shock to see a group of them talking to each other like school kids, however it was very amusing.
So the point im trying to get at now, is, can anyone recommend me a good series to get into or to start off with, as there are literally hundreds to choose from what I saw.
Cheers
"You've turned this into a boring court battle of language. Congratulations." |

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 29/10/2006 14:22:05 The best anime to get into are probably the more mature, westernized anime. These rarely have many anime cliches at all (or in the case of Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop, basically none--no giant eyes, etc). Here's a decent list:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Cyberpunk scifi at its best) Cowboy Bebop (Like Firefly except better: cowboys in space) Last Exile (Awesome steampunk-like anime series with a great story, incredible animation, and just plain overall awesomeness) Appleseed (Anime-ish sci-fi film from the maker of Ghost in the Shell) Hellsing (Badass vampire-killing ownage) Fullmetal Alchemist (annoying main character, but overall good series) Neon Genesis Evangelion (People have split opinions on this one... but its worth watching, regardless of the emo main character) Serial Experiments Lain (will blow your MIND)
KickAssAnime is a great sub group for these if you want fansubs. I don't think they have Hellsing though.
For manga... I'm haven't had as much experience. The only manga I've read are Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! (pronounced Yotsubato), so I really can't say much. But Azumanga is funny as hell... the manga is much, much better than the anime, primarily because converting a 4-panel comic into a TV series is a major challenge to any director

I second this and add Elfen Lied (quite gory, so be warned).

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - never seen it, but planning to Cowboy Bebop - very good Fullmetal Alchemist - pure love Neon Genesis Evangelion - good all the way till the ending. I still dont know if i like it or hate it...its kinda hard to decide, especially after seeing D&R and EoE. Others i dont know, but for some strange reason i like some of the more "kids" animes: Naruto - funny as hell, and if you filter all the fillers and crap it also has really good story, and its a damn timekiller too, they are at 206th episode right now.

Manga: Battle Angel Alita - Cyberpunk setting, mature and violent. Battle Angel Alita: Last Order - entertaining, not as good as original series. Eden - Interesting Series, gets a bit boring after a while tho.
Anime: Akira - Bladerunner of Anime Ghost in the Shell - ORIGINAL Movie is WAY better than stand alone complex imho NGEva, Hellsing, FMA as already mentioned are pretty good. ---

NG Evangelion is the weirdest movie/series ending ever tbfh...
But for a beginner, i started on Ninja Scroll..
anyway, heres some good un'
Ninja Scroll - simply awesome.
Samurai Champloo - I love this, blend of 17th century samurai swordplay with very 21st century attitude
Spriggan - good short movie, to get you into the sci fi mould (as Ghost in the shell storyline can be a little daunting at first)
Trigun - brilliant series, funny and intelligent
Currently im about to start collecting 'seven samurai' i wonder if anyone has an opinion on this?
Ok heres a tip
Go to asda, and buy the anime box set, its ú14 and contains Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll - best box set ever tbfh
Undercover Brothers It's great being Amarr, aint it?Ö |

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop (already mentioned, both are awesome) RahXephon Macross Plus Gundam 08th MS Team The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
I'm not much of an anime watcher, and more of a giant robot fan, so my choices are a little skewed. I'd still recommend them though. :p
I haven't seen it, but I've heard Black Lagoon also has massive amounts of win in terms of guns and explosions. -------

Edited by: blacknight9 on 29/10/2006 19:50:49 I would suggest to begin with Berserk (one of the best story in anime series from my point of view). Trigun is second best and then u should go with X-tv ,Hikaru no Go (also a good series), Bleach, Naruto and many many others.
But if u want a good database u should check AniDB and AnimeNfo.
Also i would suggest looking for trailers on Youtube. Have fun watching anime

Oh come on, Shinji is not emo, he, unlike them, is really troubled.
Lately i've watched Ergo Proxy, and i wholeheartedly reccomend it. Dark Cyberpunk anime with awesome characters and a beautiful and interesting (love her, dammit!) main goth-looking character, what is there not to love? It's not for people who like anime which are all about things ~actually happening~, since it's mainly character development interwoven with story.
P.S. Elfen Liedis also worth watching. Starts cruel, soon after you go "wtf" and later on it's cruel again. Massive gore, includes lovely love story. Got a sweet spot for troubled love stories here (Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied, see the progression... but then there's that damn black sheep, Chobits which i also love, and i STILL don't know why. Someone erase it from my mind. ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I be needin' some sig love. *sigh* |

GITS, Cowboy Bebop, and Full Metal Alchemist would be the ones out of Shikari's list that I can second as being good for beginners. If you find you really like one of them, Gundam SEED, Evangelion, The Slayers, and Trigun would be good ones to follow up with - there are a lot of great works out there, despite the general population's opinions .

grimpak's anime guide:
Hellsing: vampires with big guys yo! and the new Ultimate OVA's own btw RahXephon: people say it's a clone of NG evangelion, but tbh, evangelion is overhyped, and RahXephon has a better tune to it. Serial Experiments Lain: cyberpunkness Gankutsuou, or The Count of Monte Cristo: anime version of a classical book that has become one of my all-time favourites. Texhonlyze: weirdness x 100 Haibane Renmei: good drama anime with smooth atitude. The crest of the stars/banner of the stars saga: THE ultimate space opera. Cowboy Bebop: ftw. Azumanga daioh: comical ftw Excel saga: comical + nonsense ftw Jungle wa Itsumo Hale nochi gu: like excel saga, but much more laughs (KITTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!) Full metal panic: guns + comedy. Escaflowne The movie: ye classical "good vs evil" tale with a twist, and great gfx and soundtrack. Earth Girl Arjuna: good to see with your kids, if you like something more... "ecological" Ah! My goddess: the one and only harem anime. Ergo Proxy: more cyberpunkess Juuni Kokuki, AKA 12 kingdoms: top quality anime, and very mature plot, with chinese mythology added for extreme greatness Wolf's Rain: more ftw-ness Honey & Clover series: dramatic slice of life series.
can't think of any other ones

As far as I know it hasn't been released anywhere but Japan yet, but there's a website somewhere (I've forgotten the name) where you can download fan-subbed episodes. -------------------------
