On April 28th everyone will be able to access the new Opportunity system. "Opportunities" are a new way to discover the basics of EVE Online in a more focused and less linear way, replacing the old Tutorials.
We have experimented with the Opportunity system for a while and have received great feedback, so that we feel confident to publish this new system now to everyone. But if you don't want to receive notifications of available Opportunities, you can simply turn off the notifications in the notification settings.
Read more about the new Opportunities in CCP Rise's latest dev blog Opportunities in New Eden ... or how I learned to play EVE.

Some friends have gone away, and are thinking of returning. They need a refresher. Will it be possible to reset the opportunities system, so that they can all be obtained again, for those that want or need to have a refresher?

^^ This.
The opportunities system looks good on Singularity. I haven't gone all the way through it, but the 2/3 or so that I've seen, I like.
You naughty, naughty people don't remind new players to bookmark the wormholes they jump through, so I predict lots of frigates piloted by lost newbies in Anoikis. But hey, it's content! It will probably make wormholes seem as much a scary frontier as they were meant to be.

Resetting is an interesting idea that we haven't really talked much about. I'll bring it up with the team and have a look into it. I would definitely like your friend to be able to come back and start fresh!

I'm not sure how I feel about the ideas of opportunities being expanded further beyond the NPE, as that begins to suggest an expectation for players to achieve them. EVE being a sandbox society should be a reflection of the player himself in the purest sense, without dev meddling. |

Along with resetting, also please add a feature to keep track of the number of times we've completed (mined: 14,205 asteroids), and set up an achievements page. |

We do remind them.
Also it's not on the suggested track of opportunities. They can go and do it if they like the idea but Aura won't suggest it.

I'm still leaning toward small rewards for players completing "opportunities". I'm a firm believer at giving new players small sums of skill points to apply to any given skill book he/she chooses. It would give them a sense of immediate accomplishment and a sense of character progression just starting out. And it would also be a quick way to learn about how SPs work in EvE versus XP in most other games.
If not SP then at least a little isk to go their way. WHy? Simple: how many people in EVE would mine if it wasn't rewarding? How many people would engage in missions if it wasn't rewarding? The list can go on... driving force behind pve isn't just "content" but also the rewards tied to that activity.
Time for some fun in the sun by the pool, Cheers |

Achievement systems are a great teaching tool and I know that achievement systems have a bad rap with a portion of the EVE player-base, but as long as their primary purpose to communicate what can be done, then they can be a force for good.
Achievements get a bad rap when they fall out of teaching and into grinding. Mine 10,000 asteroids is a bad achievement. Mine an asteroid is a good achievement. Mine ice is a good achievement.
I hope that CCP doesn't shy away from this system and additional opportunities fleeing from the specter of achievements, but rather just makes the effort to make sure that repetition isn't a key driver for the design of said system.
Achievements are a tool, they can be used for good or evil. I hope the player-base also understands this as well. |

CCP, what system are planning to replicate the initial influx of cash that helps many new players get past those initial losses?
Also, since I can't look right now, do you have opportunities for finishing combat anomalies and combat signatures?
And, have you considered giving better guidance to players on the difficulty of combat anomalies and combat signatures besides reliance on an external website or having a really good memory? |

Funny you should mention that:

As a long-term suggestion, I would basically tie the opportunity groups to the activity groups that corp advertisements use. And allow corporations to see the completed opportunities of applicants. |

EVE being a sandbox society should be a reflection of the player himself in the purest sense, without dev meddling. The achievement itself is its own reward; killing a titan should be remembered for the event and not as some tickbox item. EVE is built on the premise of player justice, and so rewards should also be something that players decide and create for themselves.
I'd be careful of too many quality of life and automating features because that is tantamount to taking jobs away from the player. Sure people feel good about not having to work as hard at first, but feelgood impulses are generally self destructive in the long run. I like it. It just adds a way to track progress in new ways and may encourage people to move outside of their comfort zone to achieve new things. As long as it's not tied to non-cosmetic rewards, it does no harm either. So I'm all for it.

Give the combat section a PVP subsection where the new player must in some manner aggress another and bust that PVP cherry early in the game for the NPE and that will do a lot to retain them. Bring on the excitement and unexpected results soon in the game rather than maintain PVP as some deep dark "end game you gotta skill for X years and have X ISK piled up before you can try it" aspect that has players grinding until they get bored out of the game.
Get some element of PVP in some manner, any manner, into the NPE and it'll work wonders. My best suggestion would be to give single missions to multiple players where they all have to fight over the mission item and they can keep running the mission until they bring back the item. Give them free frigates for the mission too.

I love the opportunity system and how it is much more "sandboxy" than the old crash course.
HOWEVER:
1- IT. NEED. REWARDS. Seriously That's part of the pleasure of running the tutorial. If you don't want to tie a specific reward to a specific opportunity, why not having each completed opportunity fill a progress bar, with numerous steps giving (very basic) rewards (skill books, civilian stuff, etc...) Use the delivery system for the rewards, and it gives you an excuse to teach it to players.
2- We should be able to hide the opportunity pannel on the left side of the screen. Make it an option, please.
3- The opportunity map is ugly. It needs to be pretty and appealing! That's one critical part of the UI for new players, if needs to make them want to stay. I am aware that there are plans for this, but having a decent map -instead of randomly placed opportunities in a window- is something that should be present day one when opportunities were released.
4- As the number of opportunities increases, so does the confusion with all these alveoli that look exactly the same.

I do have one question regarding the old career agents. Besides serving as a tutorial to new players they often served as a quick repair to faction standings, where a player could just blitz trough the missions and have an easy boost to his standing. It might be argued this is a broken mechanic (wich, tbh, I think it is) but never the less it is in the game.
I suppose that with the "New Opportunities" systems, this agens will be retiring since their job becomes meaningless.
So, my question is if this is the case?
Although standings are not important for some of the players, for me they are, and I just might be running all of them while I still can. |

What we do with career agents is still an open subject. It's possible they could remain in some form but on the other hand it might be we strip them out with a sufficiently developed Opportunities system that includes some means of providing rewards.
It's very much something we have to think about some more.

And sorry ... rewards are a bad idea.
The point of rewards is not to reward, but to create addiction. To make people go for one more. One more. One more.
It's simply a bad idea to have them.
