You want it to be one way but it's not. There are plenty of altuistic corporations who do do a public service (like "Eve University") and do help the community as a whole by increasing player retention. There are plenty of roleplying alliances who have goals other than wallet and region expansion.
Totally free space can be difficult, but with some compromises there can be areas where non-aligned neutral corporations can enjoy 0.0 space without devoting themselves to an alliance.. a mid-point between the very successful "pet" arrangements the major alliances have and total laissez-faire openness.
The motivations of space holding alliances can support more ideas than that of the jealously space holding NBSI alliance. Frankly if I were starting an alliance I'd want to try something new and interesting instead of the same old thing. How dull.

I've helped summarize this for you. Feel free to edit your original post: Myth #1: Players not leet as me are noobs. Myth #2: Why bother with those not leet as me? Myth #3: NRDS? What's that?

Your just repeating your contentions, Nez. You've been given counter-examples. Deal.

One thing that I always found odd about the TBB arrangement was that instead of funneling new players into EVE-university so they could learn something, they were instead given free reign in Geminate, where all they really learnt was how to leg it if a hostile entered local... I believe you called it "Lockdown".
These things weren't mutually exclusive. We (Eve University) brought new (<2 month old) players into 0.0 and taught them how to live, earn, and eventually fight there. BTW, legging it when a hostile entered local when your in a mining or ratting kit is a great lesson for a new player! Without these experiences many player might have gone through Eve thinking it was either about Missions or Trading, or getting ganked at gates by older players. I tend to believe that new players who started with us were much more likely to stick it out with Eve (and 0.0 space) then others.
Yes, Eve university does teach players skills for 0.0 space survival in Empire, but it is best to learn about sailing at sea. A number of people from my current corp (most notably Mark Weston who you quoted) do take new Eve Uni rookies out on expeditions every couple weeks into Pure Blind, and help them learn the basics.
Eve University recruits also learned fighting as well (as our past opponents will relay to you no doubt).
I know I am getting side-tracked here.. just to show you people get passionate about different things in this game.

K the roleplay motivation falls under playstyle choice and hence is out of self-interest, which is fine.. I can't imagine anybody having a problem with that. It is however worrying that your words imply that other types of playstyle e.g. NBSI territorial conquest is devoid of "cause" or long term objective besides blowing stuff up. Ofc you wouldn't know otherwise as you have had zero contact with the reality of 0.0. There is no greater cause than fighting side by side with your brothers in arms to conquest territory or defend it, in the name of your alliance..... a pilot living in 'free space', simply cannot imagine the emotions that stirs within the player.
To narrowly define altruism as self-interest in disguise is just sophistry.
Quite off-base in your other comment. Our corp lives in EC-P8R currently, which is about as "real" as 0.0 space gets. We try to help out neutrals there too, in our very limited way. (Perhaps you were refering to the neutrals there). Life in IPS during the BLUE days got pretty real too.

I have to also point out ofc, that you were never actually a guest in 'free space', but rather part of the host alliance, so your altruistic argument doesn't work.. I mean you were part of TBB, nobody gave you anything for free.
I thought Mark was clear.. he started in Eve University, got the benefits (giving little in return initially). Then he stayed on to help BLUE (Eve Uni's alliance at the time). This is the story of most the older players in that fine corporation: He got something for free, then gave something for free.
