There are currently people on trade selling armageddons on trade channel, but are actually Omens (cruiser). So please check your items in the trade window BEFORE accpeting.
I saw some selling an arma cheap so i convo'd to see if it was a scam...

I thought one had to repackage the ships before moving them to trade window? A person just tried to sell me a condor as a scorpion. The item was named Scorpion, which had me somewhat surprised.
Unfortunately the person obviously didn't think my sense of humor was up to it, and logged off before we could both have a good laugh over this. Since he likely reads this thread, I am not holding a grudge, mate. And you can move the alt from the gate now, as well. ;)

I am not a newb, just got overly busy at the time of the trade. Too damn many windows, too damn many convos, too damn many trades going on. The scam was for an Apocolypse.
Yeah, I knew that the guy caved a little too easy when I asked for 89mil. I knew that he was acting all newbish saying he got the ship from a friend who was quitting eve. I even knew to tell him to repackage the ship before I took it. And I knew to check info on EVERYTHING that you buy.
But Two people were tryingto trade with me buying my stuff, and three others were convoing me, and I just said "F' it.
89mil-3mil = 86million ISK down the crapper.
Thats a whole f'n week's worth of income dammit.
What a pi$$er.
So I went out and killed stuff.

Sorry to hear that Booth, but thats the point, its only takes a split second mistake and you've lost alot of ISK.
Im not one of those ppl that think scammers should be banned by GM's as, in a way it, adds realism to Eve. But raising awareness of current scams might be a good idea for all traders.

But..
I said where ....I named the price and then we did the deal via the market ....
for 60M on a Skorp the seller will meet you most of the way......they want to sell 2 /3 jumps and a SELL order isnt gunna hurt them....is it .....
Ps. I am mad and paranoid ......who told me that ????!?!?!?!?

I saw the same people trying to scam (not that anyone doubted it). My main gripe is not that I'm gonna fall for it. It's that
1. People that fall for it are mostly going to be first time BS buyers. That's a huge loss for them.
2. Both scammers tried to sell to me. It took me all morning to find a good Battleship deal cause people like this were just wasting my time. Even if I'm not naive enough to fall for it, you still waste a good half an hour of my time to jump to your system and back and check the trade window and see a fricking omen or condor inside. I guess it's gonna be market transactions from here on for me.

Yeah I had a guy **probably** try to scam me last night on a Megathron BP. Guy named Robert Hanson (or something like that) was selling a ME3 megathron BP on trade channel, no price listed originally. When I convod him he initially asked for 12 mil. After I told him to go fly a kite, he re-convod me and said hed take 9 mil. Since pickup location was only a few jumps from my position, I said what the heck. I got to the system, and when he got there, we go to do the trade. Being halfway intelligent, I checked the BP stats and number of runs left, and discovered it had 0 runs remaining. Of course when I told Robert this, he freaked out saying something to the effect of "OMG I got ripped off.. I bought this BP from a guy earlier because he was selling it cheap". He may have been telling the truth, but cynicism says probably not. I hopped back in trade channel after that to see if hed try to sell it again to someone else. He was still in channel but didnt post again at least while I was still in there (course he probably noticed me back in there and knew Id call him out).

Yes, thats my worry aswell, i see the new guys in our corp working for their first bs, mining for up to 3 weeks sometimes to get the cash. If someone like that was to get scammed i wouldnt be surprised if they quit eve all togther.

I am fairly sure that what saved me was the experience from other games. If that makes me stupid, like implied above, then so be it.
I was quite annoyed by the fact that I had to come all the way to see the condor, of course, but I can live with that. I could have taken the loss as well, even it is my first BS and I would have been broke.
I bought a real scorpion from a rudely named ;) but otherwisely outstanding character later on in a deal that was as perfect as it can be.
The wasted time part is something that even a good, experienced and not-stupid player can't avoid if this spreads much more, I think.

Ah, the old bait-and-switch scam. I first encountered it in Diablo 2 where it was a real plague.
I really hope that it does not become more prelevant or this can really hurt person-to-person trading.

You can avoid an item switch scan by accepting first without putting any money in, checking the stats, then accepting again after putting in the money.

Trade is trade, scammers are everywhere... so long as it is not a bug in the game that can be blamed on programming then it is not supposed to be redeemed by the GM¦s.
I know it can be sad to have something like this happen to you but if you cant take it then you anyway wont make it in this business in the long run and probably will just quit sooner or later. Just be paranoid and play safe and then you will come out with your isk ok.
ps. Am very happy that this thread comes up and hope most people will read it for there are some that just dont know that there is a rat in every corner gnawing away at your wallet and waiting till your money falls out...

Agreed, it adds some realism into the game, however the ease at which someone can scam 60M isk off someone, transfer it to thier real character then delete the scammer, is unfair. Although tbh, i cant think of a way round it atm.

I like the one where someone offered me a Tempest for 40 million
then when I got there, she said 35 million isk when its ready and 5 million trit up front
and then when I said forget it and left the station, told me its was a one time deal
more like one time scam

There is another way to beat the scammers.
Buy from reputable corporations only. I would never dream of buying a battleship from a character from a) a n00b corp b)corp with less than 10 members. Is it really worth trying to save that 2 million ISK on trade channel? Think about the time you save and buy from a reliable supplier - often they will be able to throw in some extras as well, or give you a better deal in the future (flexible mineal deals anyone?).
This may not work for pirates tho as a lot of corporations won't sell to them.
DP Inc sell Scorpions and Megathrons and ME 5 BPC's of both btw :P

Scamming is a lot like telemarketing; It doesn't matter if 1000 people hang up on you and call you dirty names as long as you convince 10 people to sign up for the garden hose of the month club. One 60M scam is worth a lot of work to some people.
That's why we need to be able to view people's alternates on their character info screen. At least then scammers will be putting their reputation on the line in working their nefarious trade.

if CCP would recognise in their EULA that property in eve-online has real monetary value (for example, sale value on e-bay) scammers could be IP-tracked and charged with obtain property by deception, or whatever similar local law applies.
Pity.
To those that think scammers add realism - get away from the game for a few days and back to reality. In "reality" you cant create an alter ego then convienently delete it a few days later (no, you arnt a spy in a bond movie). In the evil real world, scammers go to gaol and have armed robbers using them as blow up dolls.

Tri Pulsar also scammed a friend of mine with the same trick, and after speaking to their corp CEO we were promised that this would be investigated, and money returned (not sure if the money has been returned yet since my mate is on holiday for a week).
But after reading this it seems like Tri Pulsar is still up to his scamming tricks....

Well, I will have to say that this game has been fun as hell. I have scammed more than any other person that this game has ever seen. I have lost interest in this game, and time has become an issue for me, so since im gonna take my playing elsewhere, i thought that it would be fun to have a drawing to see who gets my billions. Here's the deal...you post how much I scammed you for, and what all I got from you. (be honest or I wont enter you-- I have every1s name I've scammed) Now if you win the drawing u will recieve 4,803,584,324 isk and all the battleships that I gained from those of you who just handed them over. It doesn't. Firstly because it doesn't actually exist; and secondly because even if you assume it does, it belongs neither to your character nor to you personally, but to CCP.

Well I agree with one thing you are talking about with alts. A little bit better then just fake ID so I guess we either put a price on alts, something like 1mil first alt, 10mil second, 100mil third etc. Might prevent the deletion of alts and considerably lessen the oportunity of scamming with totally unknown alts.
Also thinking of that with being able to see what characters belong to the same account, fixing that with another option in info when looking at peeps? Would definitely prevent much scamming unless the individual would buy himself a new account that is only for scamming with no character to train skills and only deletable alts.
Or as one of my friends suggested which of course is a pretty good suggestion for CCP economy :) is the deletion of alts.

I have to agree that the scams are not realistic. I mean in real life, your standing in the observation deck overlooking the giant item you are about to purchase (You are docked when you trade after all).
And for JoeDirt .. you are a looser of the greatest kind. By cheating the gaming community, you have learnt at last what most people knew for years .. cheating in games ruins the fun for all.

I had a scammer try and sell me an omen labled as an armagedon, I was about to tell him to re assemble it to catch him out when he clicked accept and the tick in his trade appeared. So I thought **** it and clicked accept too.
I got an omen for free and the scammer got a bloody nose. It was also weird that he didn't complain 1 bit.
Easiest money I made buy travelling 4 jumps.

I have been scammed but not by you or your alts. Wouldn't mind a chunk of the isk though. I have no issues with scammers as it's part of the game and I for one have been stupid once to fall for it, it's learning money. And yes, we get scammed in real life too, how about my Nike sweater for $5, you guys think it was real?

Last friday, this guy remmecs <-> scammer tried to sell me a condor named scorpion. could see with the same it wasnt a scorpion.
Most people are decent tough. Just remember to look at the info. about the thing your gonna buy.
