oh yes the sound. its utter *******s the way eve has no proper sound scape to speak of. tinny guns. that godawful warp sound. and NO FRACKIN WARNING SOUNDS TO SPEAK OF?!?! ahem. yes. 'the ship is out of control' is all you'll ever get as an indication that things arent going quite as well as you'd want. hmmm. maybe have a listen to some other space/simulation type games to see what it should sound like as you're getting deeper into the kim-chee.

Its not just about esthethics, or immersion. Sound is a very important source of tactical information in almost any millitary vehicle made since the mid 20th century. Our ships should beep and whoop to tell us about the tactical environments they're in. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

So there's three things that need adressing re EvE sound:
The technical aspect: the current sound engine is frackin' slow and makes the game lag on even the best of computers. This needs to be fixed before any other concerns can be adressed.
The tactical aspect: the current use of sound leaves out a whole slew of critically important sound queues. The only warning your ship gives is when its too late: 'the ship is out of control' The esthetic aspect: many of the current sounds are ugly, or lack punch. Big guns that shoot shells the size of volkswagens sound like a cat's fart.

Eve music is actually quite ok imo. Its one of the things that drew me in initially, those mimimal hypnothising bits of sound. Too bad there's this horrible warp effect to tear the quiet of space completely to pieces, and the rather underwhelming sound effects in general. WTB: Gold bar for this topic (IE dev acknowledgement of problems)

Somewhere in the not too distant future it will... what with the new dx9 client, and the dx10 one a little further down the line. But this thread isnt about spiffy looks, nor is it about how easily a thread falls down to page 3. Its about sound, and why the guns sound like weak toys, the warp like a jet taking off and the shields breaking like.. nothing at all <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

CCP, being the great guys they are, are very open in their plans and such. But no matter how many times I pore over the in development and drawingboard sections, theres not a peep on sound. So ah.. Meh. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

'But otherwise I have eve radio/our corps radio or vent'
This is not just about pretty sounds to liven up the miners' life (tho that too is very important). It is about very important tactical queues, such as the fact that you are being scrambled, somebody trying to target/jam you, your ship being in various states of disrepair. That sort of thing. We cant always have our eyes glued to the meatball to know the health of our ships. Our ships should tell us about those things even when we are browsing the market or are telling our gf's why we cant do the dishes just right now. These sort of sounds should not interfere with voice comms, but should supplement them in no small way. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

CCP - We understand it may not be a high priority right now but please take some time to re-visit the sound and music and improve it. Otherwise it will start to let down the rest of the game.
Amen to that bro! 'start to let down'? i'd say it already is dragging the game down. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

Eve doesn't need a new score it need an ingame player for our mp3s, winamp clone would be awesome.
Good ideas these. But i'm afraid filling in proper effects if but the smallest part of what needs to be done. Point is, sound slows the game down horrendously, which causes many people to just turn them off. The game nearly freezes up even on very fast, very modern computers when it tries to make the explosion of forty concurrent heavy missile impacts heard. So we need a more modern sound engine. One capable of giving us 'schweeeeEEEEEE BOOOM" cruise missile impacts and 'rumblerumbleRUMBLERUMBLERUMBLERUMBLErumblerumble' battleship flypasts. One capable of letting us our own playlists of mp3 without flinching. One integrating comms jamming with the inbuilt voice comms (how cool would that be!). But most importantly a sound engine that does not choke the game everytime lots of sudden sh!t happens. Furthermore, I think the game needs tactical audio queues.

Originally by: Amarria Lightwielder by audio queues do you mean having 40 cruise missile explosion sounds being added to a queue and triggering after each other even though they all hit at the same time?
no, by audio queues i mean tactical information being brought to you by sound, such as the ship queueing you in on the fact that you are being hit, or that your shields are down etc etc. This could either be the ships voicce telling you about it, or just an assortment of beeps and whoops. either way, we need this imho.
About the fifty cruise missiles impacting at once, most games only dedicate a certain number of audio channels to such things, and the rest of the booms just dont get played. which is fine in my book. it'll still sound like you're getting bombed to the stone age

Yea, kind of like in a combat flight sim when your plane get hit by a missile and the female voice keep spouting one warning after another "radar failure, acs failure, acm failure" etc =)
umm no, rather like before the missile impacts You hear a low growling or chirping sound when your jet is being painted by a search radar in a jet sim. If that radar locks on, it goes beep beep beep (you are being locked onto!) Then if that radar goes into missile guidance mode, the beeping becomes quite **** urgent. Those are the ways in which sound is tactically important. In eve, it would also be rather impartant to have sounds of the sort you alluded to, damage being reported etc. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

But of course. Just as graphics aren't just for pretty window dressing, we get some important information for playing the game from them. Such as the glow of the shield booster, and of course the graphical information from the UI such as the meatball. Sound likewise isn't just pretty window dressing, its a highly important source of information, that makes playing the game not only easier, but also more immersive and thus more fun.

Originally by: Ranger 1 I would weep for joy if the sounds were to be made up to the level of the new graphics. Currently it is probably the single element that most breaks immersion in the game for me.

Here's to hoping the right programmer will come along. is there a job opening set on the main page for it? Its very very good to see an official response to this issue. not only does it makes me feel all cuddly and warm for being heard by the gods, but it induces a lot of patience with the issue on hand because i know its on someones agenda now. I lubs you guys

Actually, they already have a sound effects editor and composer onboard, this realX dude whose name keeps poppingup. What is really needed, as indicated by Oveur's small post, is a competent programmer to overhaul the code that generates the sounds. The current sound engine is slow, buggy, laggy and sounds horrible. Oh yes. It needs to go.

yay for necromancy! Sound in eve is generated in a way that is slow when many sounds are generated at the same time, for example when all the rats in a deadspace pocket shoot thoot their missiles at you. This lags the client out. Thats one side of the sound problem The sounds are weak mostly, except for the warp sound which to many people is too powerfull (ROOOOOAAARRR!!) Thats another side Many things which should be accompanied with sounds aren't, such as being hit by gunfire, being targetted or warpscrambled, etcetera. That's my pet peeve with EvE However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.
