Personally, if I was responsible for the portrait server, I'd be really tempted to go through a few random "bugs" while getting the new portraits sorted. On day one replace all ! with ? On day two return them to ! on a blue background On day three use the proper portraits but superimpose a ! on ALL portraits On day four switch all male portraits with females and vice versa On day five then fix all Gallentes and Caldari, but switch all Minmatar with Amarr faces On day six return to the original situation with all newer portraits back to their beloved !, but stand Jovians upside-down And on day seven finally install the correct portraits.
