Kali is about to be released, this is my next project. Getting it back up and running and handing it over to the webcell. This is definitely in the (end of the) pipeline ...

how about this for comfort: If it's not fixed by the christmas holidays, I'll most likely get fired.
We've put our efforts in getting this to be the next task on my list and we're geared towards getting this up and running asap.

really ... it's more a matter of resurrecting the project and handing it over the webdepartment. Call it more of a handover than anything else.

Programming is done, just a matter of setting up the 2 rendering machines and some replication service to the 3 image serving machines and we're in the clear (except for the rendering process which might take a while longer with 8 months worth of pictures to render)

What exactly is "a while longer"? Does it manage 2 or even 3 per day?
rendering process runs 23/7 ... at 2 portraits a second, that's about 82800 portraits rendered a day. Need to render about 600k portraits, so roughly a weeks worth of "catching up"

so its been doing it all weekend???????
I refer you to:
Originally by: t20 We also decided it would be a good idea not to run the replication at the same time as the rendering process to keep the I/O of the disks free for only the rendering of portraits.

We're rendering all pictures before copying them over to the actual machine that serve the forum portraits. This will most likely be done during a downtime, as we'll replace the old portrait content with the new content (removing redundant portraits from characters that aren't active anymore ... got to save disk space, right?).
so basically, the process is : - rendering all portraits - downtime and magic 'copying of image data' - restart rendering with automated replication resulting in updated forumportraits 'almost instantaneously'Ö - chains removed, beard shaved, respect regained and humiliation period over (and finally a decent meal).

Here's an example of the old vs new portraits:
