I wasn't around for the releases of any of the previous expansions of EVE Online so I'm looking for responses from all the veterans.
I've seen a lot of posts about Kali being the beginning of the end of EVE along with references to SWG and SOE. Do people normally write crazy, speculative posts about expansions being the downfall of EVE?

Most expansions have had something controversial one way or another. For the most part things have gone well and people proved wrong, but there is always the odd flawed concept that never should have gotten through.

It has happened on every expansion pack, patch, etc. on EVERY single MMORPG that has ever existed. It will continue to happen for every MMORPG that will exist in the future. Its human nature. Very sad actually.

People look at expansions in EVE all the wrong way.
These aren't really "expansions" as you typically see them in other MMOs. Personally if I could re-term them I'd call them "evolutions". I've seen people calling for a new EVE, EVE 2 if you will... they don't seem to understand that for all intents and purposes we're on like what.. .EVE 4?
The game we play today is vastly different than the one at launch. Engine overhauls, massive content additions, new tech, toys to play with, etc. Tech2 manufacturing and POSes are practically an entire side-game.
Look around you, in that crazy real life thing we hear about every so often. Things evolve, improve, change... sometimes for the better, and sometimes not. But you adapt in life, and that is what people must do here as well.
The only reason to fear evolution is if you've grown complacent and inflexible.

Edited by: Raste on 16/11/2006 20:12:22 I think they have gotten louder since the Dragon patch, which was supposed to fix lag, actually ended up making fleet battles and lag in general much worse. (which had been preceded by a very hyped up hardware upgrade that didnt screw things up like Dragon did, but didn't improve them as had been touted) Prior to that my impression was that the players believed what the devs were telling them far more than what is the case now.

I'm always willing to try new stuff. What I'm pessimistic about is that the new patches will break the game. Performance almost always suffers for a while after every patch. That's why they officially tell you to set a long skill training.
So in that sense, I'm not a pessimist; I'm a realist.

Well if we weren't having the same bugs three years on. If CCP actually delivered the content promised instead of gradually deleting it off the features page then we would be more optimistic.
Poking fun at the complaints through some lame sig isn't the same as delivering information and reassurance to the player community is it? That would go in the smart ass reply box.

It's important to remember that the people whining are unhappy - but the people who're happy with the change don't post as much, because they don't see reason to complain.

Its not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.
EVE has been like this from when I joined in July 2003. As we figured out things that the devs did not think of they would come behind and make corrections. I think it there is alot more players that like the easy life and now with Rig and all the other changes that are made EVE will be even more complex.
The part of PVP that soo many liked that PVP'ed was that you could look at a ship and say this is what will take it down. With the RIGs ingame now you can make a gallente ship shield tank while boosting your hybrids. Its amazing.
Soo there will be those that will have to succumb to change and they like the way it is now. The devs know that doing these changes allow for more diversity within the old tech 1 ships and makes each player more unperdictable. It just scares players that dont want to adapt.

Apologies harsh reply, I did say CCP :)
But you know as we all do that EVE has issues but its still a good game. But sticking our head in the sand doesn't improve matters :)

It seems thats true. CCP likes to do things their own way, but a lot of problems can go away if they just communicate better with their player base. I think it lies more on how CCP deal with explansions, rather than the players anticipating them. ======= -Value your character... not a bpo. -Campaigning to make all t2 bpos limited time production licenses.

The key. It falls, it falls everytime change occurs. The men and women with time machine board their mechanical wonders, and ride forth into the future! From their lofty heights standing above mortals they see the woes of the times to come, and from the kindness of their hearts they relay this information to us. Their troubles and sacrifice rarley go appreciated though. To be called "whiners" "nay-sayers" and "idiots". Lies I say! I for one shall remeber their sacrifice to bring us such tantalizing information such as "Lol Drake IS ghey haxx" or the all purpose "LOl AMrrr SUX" - Where would I be as a human being without knowing that the drake is "haxx" and tha "Amrrrr" suck at everything, and god hates them.
Good show dear boy. Good show.

Normally I would agree, Kali is different. It radically changes aspects of the game that most people have taken for granted for the last 4 years.
In 6 months time solo PvP will be a faint memory, people will say on TS "Remember when you used to be able to solo kill a guy in under 5 minutes, before the blob would take you out? Ahhh yes.. The good old days."
Not everyone plays EVE to partake in 40 man fleets. I'm not saying CCP should cater to solo players either, its a MMO after all. But enforcing bariers and restrictions onto people is never good in gaming.
EVE has always been about freedom of choice, in career, in gameplay, in everything. Freedom is what set EVE out from the rest, freedom is why most of us prefer this over WoW or similar games.
Why change that now? /braveheart FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!

Hahaha, spot on. I generally avoid these forums for that very reason. Though have been guilty myself once or twice.
Missile nerfs, highways(adding and removing), sentry guns in low sec, stacking nerfs and a whole lot more have all heralded the end of Eve at one time or another.

Its been like this for ages. Missile nerfes back in the old days were suposed to "Kill caldari ships in PVP" and make them "Completely vulnerable to interceptors." The origional battlecruiser were considered "Useless, and inefectual at PVP." Assualt frigates were considered "A waste of money compared to an Interceptor that can do everything it does better." The turret sig radius nerf back in the way old days suposedly killed battleships, and the dual microwarpdrive nerf made cruisers useless. In more recent days an older hitpoint buff suposedly made solo ganks impossible, and changes to drones made drone ships ineffective in PVP. Theres probably another twenty or so comments just like these that turned out for the most part to be false. People will always latch onto the most contraversial part of any change in this game and complain about it. I can't believe someone hasn't complained yet about the changes to the autopatcher destroying Eve as we know it. ----
