Hello everyone!
Yes I know this is probably a topic that has been beaten to death, but I've done a lot of research on it from other sources and have played a ton of different MMO's and I would just like to make the argument for Walking in Stations and how it could be of benefit to the game. If anyone has any objections feel free to post them, this is a discussion and I'm well aware other people won't share my point of view.
Without rambling on here goes: 1. Creation of content through different forms of player interaction. This one's pretty obvious. By letting capsuleers roam around in the station they're docked at and interact face-to-face with others opens up an entire can of worms and endless possibilities. Here's a hypothetical situation: You just docked up in an NPC station after an exciting roam in LS and decide to unwind. You step out of your CQ and walk through the hallways, witnessing other players making small talk or trading with each other in the hallway. You arrive at the local pub/bar/nightclub and order a drink for a few ISK, then sit down at a table watching The Scope from a nearby hanging holopanel. A player who happens to be bored sits down at your table and challenges you to a minigame that you can actually play installed in the table itself for either money (i.e. gambling) or for fun. He beats you, takes some of your ISK and tells you "good game". After that you relax watching the ships belonging to other players undocking and flying close to the station through the window beside you) This is just an example scenario, but if WiS was ever implemented the sheer amount of new and fun minigames, content and ways to interact with new people you've never met would add a whole new sense of immersion to the game, which brings me to my next point...
2. An All new level of immersion Being able to walk around and interact with New Eden with your toon would enable the Devs to inject and implement a ton of material from the EVE Lore into the game. I absolutely love the lore behind this game. Its so rich, vast and detailed. I think I read just about all of the EVE Chronicles. And yet there's a level of disconnect from the game itself. Imagine being in an NPC station and seeing Amarrian NPC scholars or priests walking down the halls, Gallente exotic dancers trying to entice you, Minmatar tribesman telling each other myths or Caladari business moguls arguing over how to run their corp. Being able to interact with NPCs like these (which serve to enrich the atmosphere a la Skyrim) and have them explain little tidbits about the empires or other facets of the game's rich sci-fi environment would really immerse those who are more inclined towards the RPing side of things. And yes, even though the NPCs may say the same things over and over again would get repetitive, but for new subs the new players could learn a lot about the history and stories behind New Eden.
3. New ways to manage Corps/Alliances Imagine the sheer possibilities for corps and alliances WiS would bring. You corp office in station could have strategic planners, market share information on giant holopanels or terminals your toon could walk up to and manage the corp from. It would also provide a place where toons and friends from the same corp could gather together and hang out in a lounge or something, do minigames or simply stand around AFK surrounded by friends and wingmen.
These are just some of the ideas I came up with off the top of my head. If anyone wants to add more or make your arguments against WiS please feel free. |

I don't think anyone but the harshest of trolls would make any real claim that WiS couldn't be an awesome addition to EVE.
The problem is that CCP does not have infinite budget and developer resources, so it's not really a question of how interesting WIS would be on its own merits. It's a question of priorities, and how much WiS couild add to the EVE experience for the cost vs all the other space-shippy-things CCP could be spending their time doing.
And put in context and taken out of the vacuum, it becomes evident that a huge portion of the player-base would rather see CCP focusing their limited resource pool on improving the core game that includes spaceships as I think most people feel it's a better experience/cost return.
The real missed opportunity, I think, is that while CCP apparently had money and devs to burn on WoD and Dust415, they COULD have instead burned those resources on a WiS addon/module/whatever for EVE, but didn't. I can't imagine they would have gone through the money any faster, and couldn't possibly be in a worse place for it than they are now. Too late for that now though... |

I think it would work at cross purposes of the strength of the game, the spaceships. We should encourage players to leave stations and go into space, not promote spending hours in stations.
I mean it already happens as an avoidance technique as it is the one "safe" area in the game; but now it would be practically incentivized.
Now if I could smuggle guns in there and have dust style shoot outs until security ejects me I'd be on board. Shoot the player, clear the isk on the gaming table and make a run for my ship. Or have a station alert put out an APB and bounty out for such a player. You get capped in station you lose any implants and isk on hand. But already it's a different game, more GTA Online than EVE.
It is hard enough to execute a game when you have concrete focus and vision on what you want to be, cobbled on side features that add very little to that central vision are probably a bad idea. Fix space first before you worry about a whole new layer of Meta.
At the end of the day though I think it honestly would detract from more content creation than it would bring to the table. |

It's very humbling and heartwarming to see a WiS thread on GD again. Here's to hoping It may prosper and many good features may be discussed and added when CCP finally releases the long due and praised by the big majority of EVE community important feature Walk In Station that will allow us to see face of enemy when docked in station.

I think at some point it needs to happen. But having never done game development, or knowing CCP's structure I have no idea how feasible it is for them to even try to do it. Seems like spending a lot of time QAing art assets.
then again pretty much every game seems to have walking around as a feature so it can't be that hard can it?

This.
Some people are so unrealistically hopeful and utopian that no amount of failure ever dissuades them from something they think they want. Literally everything CCP has done that involved some form of walking has either failed (Incarna, WoD), been disappointing at best (DUST, even if it's true that it is profitable) or been a myth that's probably been discontinued with little fanfare (Legion, EVA exploration).
What has worked? Spaceships. Period.
The WiS crowd's solution to the above history of Walking around stuff from CCP? Pour even more money and time down the same drain that's failed to produce much for 12 years. Seriously, WTF guys? |

Given there isn't really any in station content currently that isn't much of a leap to make. Look at what unique items go for, I'd say there is a lot of room for vanity in eve. Add in something like Casinos, and I think WiS will be a lot more successful than people think. There are some who like the in space stuff, but want the in character stuff too.

I can understand the bitter resentment the older players have for this concept based on past experiences, and I'm not here to start flame wars or ceaseless bickering. Just elaborating on my thoughts here.
It doesn't even really need to be an extremely complex system, in fact it WiS could be made simple enough in order to not overtax and overwork the devs, art team, etc. For some quick examples, when you click on the door to your CQ, a menu could pop up that gives you a list of different locations around the station. That list could be small at first limited to 2 or 3 different spots like a bar, a casino like someone mentioned earlier and maybe some kind of market for toon clothes or something. Instead of rendering and programming all of the hallways for the toons to walk around in, simply bring up a loading screen going from your CQ to that location on the menu you picked after clicking on the door control panel.
It could start small at first by like having only 2 or 3 locations on the station to go to, but if the whole WiS thing becomes more popular, CCP could add more locations based on player feedback. Also, each of these locations could be "pre-rendered copies" like how all the different empire NPC station CQ look the same.
Just some more ideas here. No need for hostilities please, just voicing some opinions that you can take or leave. |

No, there are forum people who want WiS, sometimes rabidly so. We tend to clash, I believe because some of us are pragmatic types (speaking for myself, I like the spaceship focus of the game and hate the idea of the WiS 'distraction) and most of them are imo utopian "immersion" type players who want an all inclusive sci fi universe that CCP once said they wanted to make....but failed to deliver at every turn.
I think the past should teach us something, and it's foolish to think that a company that just hasn't been able to deliver on a fraction of their previously revealed "visions" is not the company to screw around with trying (AGAIN) to do WiS. It's like taking your car to a mechanic 15 times and having that mechanic fail to fix the problem 15 times and thinking "one more time will do it!" lol.

As someone who started after Incana, I've only a recent perspective, but I get the impression that WiS should not come before the focus of this game which involves spaceship in space.
It's ok for WiS to be somewhere on a wishlist but I see (from discussions on the forums) that there are other more serious issues. |

It's not that there wouldn't be any interest in WIS, and I"m pretty sure even those that seem heavily opposed to it would check it out if CCP all of a sudden came out and said 'hey guys guess what we've been working on in secret for 6 years', and the addition actually rocked. But...
1. This topic has been beaten into the ground, with CCP pretty much saying the project has been abandoned and there are no future plans for it and.
2. The resources needed to produce anything of even mediocre quality are just not available, and if they were, they would be taken away from improving the core game.

I don't think many are necessarily against WiS, just the idea of devoting that much time away from the "in-space" content. CCP tried that before and were pretty roughly chastised by the player-base for it, though people were already pissed for various other reasons by that point as well. I'm not all surprised if CCP were reluctant to even think about WiS, even now or anytime soon.

Some counterarguments for you..
Cyborg Girl86 wrote:1. Creation of content through different forms of player interaction.
I think CCP should build a casino right in Jita that is ISK based. It should have all kinds of games, and none of it needs to be WIS based at all to be very popular. Just like PLEX is a way to curb RMT, CCP's casino would be a way to curb 3rd party gambling sites, which in my opinion would be a good thing.
Quote:2. An All new level of immersion Being able to walk around and interact with New Eden with your toon would enable the Devs to inject and implement a ton of material from the EVE Lore into the game.
You are underestimating how much work this would take. CCP has massively stepped up their lore development through Scope videos, lore updates on various social media, and lore tie-ins to game mechanic changes. Asking them to do all this in realtime 3D on a game engine that is a major resource hog at the moment has a lot of complexities that CCP probably wouldn't have the manpower for.. without sacrificing the core game.
You won't be able to argue for sacrificing the core game to develop WIS. I feel that the company won't ever want to make that sort of decision ever again.
Quote:3. New ways to manage Corps/Alliances Imagine the sheer possibilities for corps and alliances WiS would bring. You corp office in station could have strategic planners, market share information on giant holopanels or terminals your toon could walk up to and manage the corp from.
Have you used Slack? Have you seen some corp webpages? Here's an example. Have you seen siggy? Have you seen Tripwire? Have you seen the tools on Steve's homepage?
I could list you a thousand examples, but my point is all of this infrastructure is better built by third parties. A corp's IT infrastructure is part of the blood, sweat, and tears of building the corp. CCP unlocks all this capability through character/corp API, CREST, and the open EVE database access APIs so that CCP isn't spending time building tools EVE players can build for themselves.

There is room in eve for WiS, or avatar game play. But to be 100% honest, i am not sure what ccp is doing in way of direction. they keep flip flopping. in 2013 it was EVE everywhere! in 2014 it was Eve on PC all game playing together eventually! in 2015 it was, yea lets be stupid cautions and only show what we can deliver this year... oh and btw here are some random bits we are working on vr, which is kinda outside of new eden.. except nemesis which is an eve shooter.. but contrary to last year, this won;t be on pc.
I got the feeling that at fan fest 15 ccp had made a hefty promise at 14, jumped the gun on legion and decided to pull WAY back and go slow.
My honest hope is eve vegas and fan fest 16 set a good ground work for whatever the hell ccp as a companies future plans and goals are, cause this confusing crap needs to stop.
Then they can bring in avatar play, but it needs a place and a way to play, so first ccp needs to get a goal and stick to it damn it,

There is a reason for this. CCP did not have a clear director for WoD, and kept changing the damn thing. Same with incarnia. Ambulation in 2007 was AMAZING, then somewhere along the way ccp said 'naw thats stupid lets go this really ****** way instead' Its mostly about no real direction, just pie in the sky ideas, that are poorly executed. Dust had this huge ambition. but we got.. crap. CCP forgot the important thing... us. Dust might be profitable, but it failed. and contrary to popular belief no, it did not fail because it 'was not on pc' Dust failed because ccp forget the most important thing. US. The eve community. We needed a reason to give a **** about dust, and we didn;t have one. If we HAD we would of done more to bridge the gap and make it fun for dust bunnies. And i think this is something ccp learned about Valkyrie. When you let eve players use it, try it, and give you feed back, we start to care about it. If you make the eve community really care about the product, then it will be successful.
WiS failed, not because of just incarnia, bu the other issues hitting ALL at once. CCP lost its way a long time ago, got bogged down in becoming bigger then they were. forgot about us, and ****** up. I see that ccp is remembering without there players caring, anything in the eve universe will fail.
And they really need to sotp biting off more then they can chew and focus.

Nothing is wrong with so-called space-barbies. Many WiS objectors quite enjoy playing with the avatar creator, which perfectly lands them in space-barbie category.
Nevertheless, pro-spaceship crowd freaks out each time the "dead horse" is brought up to be beaten up.
Problem is CCP probably cannot develop WiS that won't fry our GPU's again - even after all this time. Jita Bars, Casinos? Nah... Too much crowd. The avatars would have to be dumbed down. What a shame would it be!
Sibyyl wrote:You are underestimating how much work this would take. CCP has massively stepped up their lore development through Scope videos Well, not any less work than any generic MMOs would. Scope videos are great, except every "character" looks oh so dead in them, I think it's pretty embarrassing. Is that "massively" stepped up development or rather "Sorry, we cannot do any better than this?"
Sibyyl wrote:You won't be able to argue for sacrificing the core game to develop WIS. TBH, I am not quite sure what the core game development of EvE for CCP is any more. The recent tweaks of UI - neocom, overview or even damage control icon, ffs, were not necessary. But maybe, just maaaybe, gave hopes about drone UI to be reworked? Probably not.
The only reason for not developing ambulation any further would be not having any developers left, which is probably the case (WoD team disbanded, other developers layed off or ran off.) |

Unless WiS contributes something to the game (like having someone get kicked out of station, stealing his stuff and generally being able to mess around with other players) there is no point to it. Hell, even providing "windows" (a way to see who camps the station flying what) could be considered a contribution. Just Walking in Stations to show off some clothes can not.

The fact is, CCP took their best shot (personally, I would argue they took their second best shot, Ambulation was far closer to what we had asked for than the abortion that was Incarna), and they fumbled it so badly, that ultimately scrapping the whole thing and starting from scratch would have to be a serious consideration in the best way to develop avatar play.
Ultimately we aren't opposed to the [bi]vision[/i], but we have serious, well founded and supported by ample evidence, belief that CCP is physically and mentally unable to deliver. And last time, the attempt was such an embarrassment to CCP, and so detrimental to the game as it stands, that a second attempt can not even be contemplated without serious and sincere reassurance that the game wont be allowed to grow mouldy in the corner again while they make the attempt. The game survived WiS, and some would argue that in the end we profitted from it, since the violence of the backlash drove CCP out of the melaise of half-baked features and in to repairing and improving the games core. But a repeat performance might drive the stake in for good.
The second problem is that the dream has long outstretched any sensible possibility (ask anyone what they think WiS should include and you'll get a list of insane in-the-sky features), such that the only result of any attempt will be another round of crushing disappointment. Add to the fact that any attempt at a multiplayer WiS probably means the entire avatar system has to be rebuilt from the ground up (we still, in all these years have seen no evidence that the current avatar system wouldn't collapse and meltdown utterly with multiple characters operating in the same instance), which risks alienating those members of the community who are satisfied and enjoy the current avatars and clothing.
And finally, the arguement for WiS has always proclaimed "But Star Citizen and other games will have Avatars". Well, there is no prize in this competition for second place. Devoting money and dev time in to becoming "also has avatars, but not as good as" is no improvement. Better CCP focus on EvE's strengths, and what draws players to it, and ensure those players are happy and staying around, than cater to the audience of another game that does that feature better, and gain nothing from the effort. |

Since it is agreed that WiS is dead, may I ask if there is anyone (apart from trolls) who can find merit in its first iteration, CQ.
Does this add anything to EvE ?
I can't myself, think of anything, and I think that CSM ought to look at asking EvE to decommission it, thereby releasing the additional resources tied into CQ for a more useful prupose -- perhaps the reduction of HiSec to noob systems, and a trade hub or two, to allow for a more open relationship between predator and prey, or the abandonment, little by little, of CONCORD activity, as the Empires turn to deal with the Sleeper menace. |

They'd waste the least amount of time to just simply leave it as is, which is exactly what they seem to be doing. CQ is far from a finished product it was meant to be. It's pretty much seemingly decommissioned already since nothing has really come out relating to it since Incarna, minus what patch work and optimization was needed to make it more stable and less likely to smoke people's rigs.
If you don't like it or don't use it, then don't use it or continue not using it. Some people still like hopping on the couch after a rough day and watch old RnK or Garmination vids on the tv.

Aralyn Cormallen wrote:The fact is, CCP took their best shot (personally, I would argue they took their second best shot, Ambulation was far closer to what we had asked for than the abortion that was Incarna), and they fumbled it so badly, that ultimately scrapping the whole thing and starting from scratch would have to be a serious consideration in the best way to develop avatar play.
+1 From me
Very well said and some good points brought up by everyone else here.
I can see now why it would be much better for CCP to focus on the game's strengths and core gane mechanics. I'm pretty convinced and now feel the same way as the "against WiS" crowd.
One of the best ways to survive is to adapt and change one'e point of views after some convincing I suppose. |

IBL... really this thread topic keeps getting raised from the dead every few months or so. They only thing that happens more often is the eve is dying threads.
WiS just doesn't work with what eve IS. People claim they can go to some virtual bar and make some shady deal would be cool. But the fact is that that sort of game play doesn't work in a game like eve. Open and sandbox where you can get shot even in the safest place in the galaxy. It works when you have essentially single player minigames strapped to the main game with no real interaction with other players. aka quests in WoW. Note the total safety in WoW.
Others think that getting in and out of spaceships is fun and makes the game better. After the first 5 times, and having to watch the same walk to the market every bloody time you undock, and everyone will want to turn it off.
And right now, if its THEE feature to have. Play star citizen. Oh wait its not a MMO. Yea cus doing stuff like having 2000 people walking around in mass is easy as pie program. WoW and co have shards, servers and now phases because their servers simply can't do it. Why would ccp be able to?

I started playing the game based on the WiS future content that was discussed. It sounded pretty cool and yes lots of others games will have WiS so lets not pretend its because CCP can't do it. More the case that some vocal players dont want it. They dont like change and complain about everything anyway.
"CCP needs to fix space first", well lets be honest no one will ever be 100% happy so just let CCP do their stuff and moan later.
Everyone is too reluctant for change but how does it really effect you? Sure the money spent developing it would take away from others areas for a while but so what. Let them make their game and lets see how it turns out. I agree completely that there is major disparity between the game lore and how the game is played. I feel like I need to search high and low to find scraps of info about the lore as I havent read the chronicles. More effort needs to be made to show everyone how great it is and WiS is the way to do it. |

Getting 2000 people or more to walk around in a single station is not trivial. In fact the standard way right now to deal with that is to run shards/phases and of course you have different non interacting "realms" between sections of the station.
So happens when your 100 man corp docks? you all even up in the same station yet can't see each other....

I feel exactly the opposite. I'd much rather that CCP returned to their more visionary way of thinking. EVE would never have existed in the first place, if they'd been listening to all the nay-sayers and the nit-pickers, but it seems to me that that's what they've been doing ever since the first 'burn Jita' event. What we're getting now is small, incremental changes, minor improvements and the occasional overhaul of already existing features, be it industry/sov/etc.
When's the last time CCP came out with something for EVE that just blew your mind? When's the last time we saw something completely new, rather than some incremental add-on or change to old content? Don't get me wrong, there was a time when EVE was in bad repair, and needed some updates, but I feel like that time has passed, and now's the time to really push for something extraordinary. I'd love to see WiS or maybe a Valkyrie tie-in to the EVE universe, or in a perfect universe both, rather than just another "fix" or "overhaul". |

Please, its 2015 its doable for a company like CCP. But you don't want it to work so everything is unobtainable. Its not constructive or helpful to say "go play star lamo" etc to people that came to play this game based on CCP's vision for the future. That future included WiS, bars, clubs, shops, industry and corp spaces to chill with friends etc. So don't tell me to go play something else just because you are stuck in the past. I love spaceships and I love this game which is why I play, WiS is a part of that. Right now its in dire need of some love.

We have WiS. It's here, it's released, and it's utter, unforgivable crap. If CCP had the ability to satisfy your dreams, this arguement would be moot, because we would have it, sitting there in game. As a core concept, WiS is still a very cool idea but the EVE community has already given enough reasons as to why WiS shouldn't be added to EVE.
But having said that, CCP should salvage what they can from WoD and reshape WiS into a single-player RPG set in the EVE universe. People who want the WiS experience gets one, people who don't want to play EVE get a experience in the EVE universe and CCP gets to have a new game on the market. Everybody wins! \o/

Just want CCP to flesh it out a bit, not saying they should pour all their time and resources into it but at least give it a bit of loving every expansion until its up to scratch. There are many things in the game which have been worked on, improved and balanced to bring us what we have today. More time spent on WiS is only a good thing as its here and its here to stay so let's bring it up to scratch with the rest of the game. |

Too late for that now though...
they could cut the budget on re-designing the graphics in game, and add that to the WiS budget for starters. Plus the tonnes of other 're-work-that-isn't-needed' stuff to boot.
Is a massive missed opportunity. Wouldbn't change the existing game format that we love so much, at all. but it would add a massive dynamic addition game that is 'directly' related to it. |

Yes in the current form of eve with 1 sec server ticks. This would be unbearable with First person interactions. Other interactions and stuff are harder as well. Since local geometry is more important and typically a bigger server burden.
Don't get me wrong. It could be done. But dam if WoW started using phasing to fix their performance issues when they make *billions*, i think it pays not to underestimated the difficulty of the task for a company much smaller than Blizzard.

It's been 8 years since the original plans for Ambulation.
It's about to be 4 years since Incarnageddon.
WiS was the future. Now EVE no longer haves a future, rather a ongoing present attempting to replay the past with Apochrypha 2.0 (New zero security space. And this time you're meant to colonize it. It worked in 2009, so why take any chances?)
All pros and cons of WiS have been said many times. So I'll try to summarize it in a single sentence:
EVE with WiS would be a different EVE, and CCP is no longer attempting that.
73% of EVE characters stay in high security space. 62% of EVE subscribers barely PvP. 40% of all new accounts just "level up their Ravens". Probably that's why PvE content in EVE Online is sub-par and CCP is head over heels for PvP...

Did they say it was due to technical limitations? I don't recall reading that. It happened and was awesome, but they threw it away. Then they did it again. And againGǪ They kept increasing or altering the scope to just beyond what they were capable of delivering on a performance and gameplay standpoint until they had lost all the money invested and could no longer rely on their main source of income to maintain it. Technical limitations were part of it; money was part of it; and good-will was part of it.
Funnily[?] enough, the first public demo in 2008 was probably their best bet and seemed to deliver what most people wanted (most notably multi-avatar interaction), except for one thing: it didn't have the flash CCP required for WoD. Had they stuck with that, we would have had full WiS with ageing graphics (that might be worth upgrading) now, rather than a tech-demo with ageing graphics and no value or redeeming qualities to warrant an upgrade.
These days, the technical limitations may be ever so slightly behind us, but instead the building blocks have become old and crusty and not all that good a foundation for anything any more. This means they have to lower their aim, re-build a lot from scratch (again), and yet somehow convince a slowly dwindling community that this time it'll work, if people suspend their wish for constant improvement just one more timeGǪ

How well that would scale with actual players controlling them is up for grabs, as would the issue of having everyone in the same place at the same time, but the demo allowed for something the Incarna engine simply could not do at launch: run multiple avatars in one scene.
The hands-on demo that we were allowed to play with at FF2008 was, if not spectacularly fast, then at least in working order in this one crucial regard. The rest, as you say, can be done with some intelligent form of instancing (which matters less in the type of environment WiS was supposed to offer, as opposed to open space).
Later peeks at WoD suggested that they might have overcome that, but by then it was too late.

One of the best ways to survive is to adapt and change one's point of views after some convincing I suppose.

For me WiS is something I could take or leave, I play other games that allow for 'walking around' (SWTOR, Star Trek Online) and it's no big deal, no great thing either. I can walk in real life, what I can't do in real life is fly a faster than life space ship, and one of the best things about EVE for me (and I'll risk speaking for others and say that there are at least a few people like me in EVE) is that it's FOCUSED on what it's about (spaceships), almost in the way that World of Tanks is focused on the Tanks (and yep, what happens here happens to them too lol)
One of the biggest reason for such staunch resistance to WiS stuff isn't just the past, it's the concepts fans.
As has been said in this thread, this issue comes up like the Elvis and Tupac sightings every few weeks/months and the WiS concept's sycophantic followers come out of the wood work, still failing to understand that their activism turns of many a potential supporter.. Hell, in the last big WiS discussion, people were talking about having 'hanger briefings (like this is Wing Commander lol) or simply sitting in a station watching a sun set or moon rise...
The WiS community being slightly less looney would go a long way towards building a community consensus on the issue.

Funny that you didn't clarify then You quoted the wrong person? I tried pointing out that you are not helping yourself by being ignorant of what other people say. I have no personal opinion on the matter. I can adjust my character's viewpoints accordingly. Pixie, for example, is no fan of it at all and would abuse the features to exploit players, while Luxy would love to have a more personal way to approach others. I have picked role-players from the forums as role models for them. If you want clarification, ask the one who brought them up. If I am ignorant of what people say, its because they never said it in the first place. Hence my comment. I didn't quote the wrong person I was quoting you for a reason. You shouldn't be ignorant of that reason so I will clarify. The reason I quoted you was because you said it was easy to understand the points so it was rather funny that you didn't even say what they were. I don't roleplay I am a human at a computer with a viewpoint which I am expressing via this forum post. I never said it's easy. It's essential to take time to read, think about and understand other people's posts. You do not do so, thus I will not dignify your drivel with further responses. I must admit, WiS is still something that deep down I would love to eventually see, but after reading the well-constructed posts by some of those who are against it, I'm happy to settle with the game without it. It has not worked. CCP needs some balance here. WiS is an incomplete, broken feature. Just like all other incomplete, broken features, it needs to be fixed and completed in parallel with the other work.
Oddly, the last WiS related thread was titled "drinking in stations". It was a fairly popular thread, with quite a bit of support. I think we need "Drinking and gambling in stations." It would not allow you to shoot other players, but it would be funny to see someone gamble away their Titian.

WiS could add gameplay elements that people might use, but not quite how they think.
If ccp was to really redo walking in stations, they need to kill incarnia and rebuild ambulation. If you have no idea what ambulation was, try and find the presentation from fan fest 2007.
But for now, wis is dead, untill space gets stable, because lets face it, it will never be fixed.
I still want ccp to do the 2014 vision, and combine all games into one platform, with easy of switching between them, to compete with other games that are coming. and no, not just Scam citizen. As i said, ccp needs to make the eve player care, becuase if we do, even a ****** ccp game could succeed.

I don't know why people stick on this, but I would surmise that these were the same people who believed that "EVE Online has 500,000 "players" when CCP kept saying that in 2012.
No one outside of CCP know how many real people play (and even they might not know), 'concurrent user count" doesn't count users it count logged on accounts, and CCP made a whole bunch of changes that made Alts less necessary (like multiple character training) and less useful (jump fatigue nerfing individual player independence making cyno alts redundant). Add to that people shedding accounts as PLEX rise and you get a picture that CCPs old statement of "2.2 alts per player" probably decreased.
For all anyone outside of CCP knows, the amount of 'real players' of EVE online could have gone up (probably hasn't), but the fact is we don't and can't know, concurrent user count tells us very little. |

For all anyone outside of CCP knows, the amount of 'real players' of EVE online could have gone up (probably hasn't), but the fact is we don't and can't know, concurrent user count tells us very little. about all we know form someone who did an artical is ccp did shead some money last year, there rev was down i think 5m for the year or soemthing
That suggests CCP received less revenue, but tells us nothing about how many play at any given time, how many people shed alt accounts due to changes, how many fewer store purchases there were etc. Could mean a lot of things, only one of which is fewer actual players.

Why can't CCP just give us some WiS little things? Each time I walk in station I want to see face and body of other enemies docked in station, but right now I have to click each one on the guest list and then "show portrait" or "show full body".
This is too boring. It would be easier if we just had a special window where we could browse through all the characters' bodies and clothes instantly, even maybe undress them some of the clothing pieces if we think they look better that way.
There's so many capsuleers out there that lack a sense of style and wear so many ratchet threads. Maybe add a cool flashy ambient in the "show full body" scene too because that grey background gets old really fast and doesnt help the mood.

i think its pretty ignorant (yeah strong word used) to consider removing walking in stations, you're basically trying to force everyone to play with you, meanwhile there are players who actually enjoy the interiors while monitoring the markets and such. next thing you know when and if it gets removed. you'll go right back into the circle of endless debates trying to place blame on something else.
I look at it this way, eve needs to evolve and grow up and stop all the endless debating. other games are coming far along and competition is on its way, and guess what.. They have Walking in stations.. hec you get your own Hanger for pete's sake.. you can walk around in your HANGER! oh my gosh new idea here.. but eve goes "we want to make sure no one sits in station and is forced to play with us cause we're dying numbers already and players are leaving for better games.. so force them to undock ccp.. force them to do it!"..
I know there's plenty of denial with some of you but again players casual and mainstream have plenty options to go out and enjoy instead of sitting here waiting for slowpokes at ccp to figure out where they went wrong, debate about it, debate when to fix it, debate when to evolve, debate when to move forward, debate when to fix it, and lastly debate when to finally change.
get with the program ccp, you guys are slow, awfully slow and you remove the walking in stations watch just how boring this game speeds up becoming.
whats the point of selling gear for your avatar when in fact no one else can even share the same room with you.. whats the point of "the scope" videos when in fact you never allowed people to stand/sit in the same dang room.
it just doesn't add up

So,
I'm new.
Imagine for a second that I advocated changes to flying in spce, shooting spacey type things.
-> And someone checked my killboard.
Now, imagine If I wanted WiS to be implemented fully within EVE.
With provision for 'common area', time limitation (make those locator agents work for you) like 1hr per day with 'let me know when s/he leaves his/her quarters' requests. War Dec active members of enemy corps can fight each other in station. You can overspend your time in station, lose your clone and it's implants and wake up at your med clone facility and need to fly back for your ship.
If I said all this as a character that had spent many hours docked in a station this would be legitimate
If I was saying "CCP throw all your money at PvP, don't worry my friends know my main has 99% kb efficiency on it's own sheet" from this sheet, would it not identify the attempt to derail a thread / troll the now conformist OP?
I think for CCP to consider reasons for and against WiS they should consider the playerbase, absolutely. That same 'winning' playerbase is still sat with an idea of a dwindling population, despite having their choice selected as corporate output from the hosting company CCP hf.
Tweetfleet Slack - 1225 Members - 421 in Lore channel.
This tells you that more than a third of all players in the same chat client as CCP Devs want LORE.
This forum explains that it's not worth the effort.
In more advocation for WiS the number of 'loose' games out there (mainly having trouble solving avatar jumps) with healthy player bases is very large. There are many successful clones of the concept 'players log in, walk around, and interact' most of them have more PvE servers than PvP servers.
Yes this kinda points to last bastion of all things pvp and holy. You'd be somewhat right, were it not for the fact that EVE is the number one Science Fiction based Game on the market.
It's in a very good position in respect of ingame fighting, Valkyrie looks good at it's initial Alpha, Dust yeye sure same time as PlanetSide2 and on PSN as well, just as PS offered PS4 instead of PS3 last year and Dust is locked to PS3, we get that.
Finishing WiS / EVA Relic site escalation / Dust-to-EVE avatar interaction would bring CCP hf. closer to that 'commonly idolised utopian but undeliverable vision' that would also be needed for Legion. Considering the income stream for WoD was not WoD pre-order, you can safely work from the footing that the money was there, and by attempting to branch out into vampire territory the reputed brand did not penetrate the market sufficiently to justify further expenditure.
EVE would have riots where people quit if the same budget was spent on WiS, yet they say 'not a lot' in respect of WoD here.

OP, i see your points and where you're going, but eve is a game about internet spaceships. i have no great desire to walk around in a station and "interact" with other players.
eve is a fantastic game as is and i don't feel it's needed.
having said that, i have to admit that some of your descriptions of what you'd like to see implemented are enticing, but a few of them would require an insane amount of code and artwork to apply seamlessly, and i'm left wondering how much lag it would consistently introduce to each node?

God, that game was an abomination. That was the first time I have ever had to test Steam's refund policy. Not just the stations part, either, the entire game was one ****** up experience after another. The controls alone warrant putting that game down for good, let alone the gamebreaking bugs, unplayable combat, unintuitive rules, and the fact that you're stuck in one freaking ship the whole game.
Much like WiS itself. Decent concept, worst possible execution.

Cyborg Girl86 wrote:Hello everyone!
Hey Cyborg Girl86
WIS is long gone and ccp said if I have remembered that quite a few years back.
Back then People did not want CCP to introduce WIS into the game as EvE Online is based on flying ships in space and did not want people to walk in stations as what you have quoted above.
CCP are building allot better game and EvE had been allot more stable over the last few years than when I first started playing EvE back in 2006.
CCP should be Congratulated for the effort and hard work they had put in this game of EvE over the last few years. And one happy customer :)
On a side note WIS is put on CCP back burner and to never be released ever.
CCP Fozzie keep up on the hard work what your team is doing for the new sov changes

No, you're grandstanding, spewing the "EVE is dying because the puerile niche that I want isn't being catered to!" bullshit, misrepresenting pretty much every opposing point of view, regurgitating a variety of tired, long standing whines, all the while trying to paint yourself as "normal gamer".
You don't speak for a single damned person besides yourself. I am a "normal gamer", and if CCP revisits WiS I will cease playing this game, as they will have demonstrated an irredeemable commitment to go in the wrong direction.

According to a CCP WiS development is on back-burner, which could mean anything anyway.
The last WiS threadnaught reached its almost 200 pages lifespan: Team Avatar and the future of our prototype. The beast died due to abundance of general forum trolls naturally.
As I understand CCP doesn't want to develop anything but "meaningful" gameplay, which could be station combat, much better exploration (not the silly minigame.) or maybe even DUST/PI hybrid. But the issue is "meaningful" budget is also needed, which after all the development issues encountered, CCP might no longer has. Anything less than meaningful could mean no development also. Perfect excuse to not work on it. It's much easier to juggle Ishtar stats around isn't it?

It's like reading people debating "Reasons for/against natural evolution".
Results kinda predictable.
Some things just happen eventually for natural reasons. A combination of forces.
It's simple progression imo, along with survival of the fittest.
A form of avatar interaction (note: Not "WiS" per say) in EVE is inevitable.

Only elitist in eve online cant seem to understand the level of content walking in stations provides, we should have a Cantina type lounge where all players could meet up and chat, drink, even dance. there should be far more animations our avatars could do. imagine having a CCP guard perform RP Rap songs in Jita.
would be nice to see two players atleast having an actual trade rather than this out of date right click "trade/accept" window mess going on.. I want to see more WiS content.
it doesn't have to be hard, im sure there are some here that wishes for that.. they want a trap door placed somewhere to add risk vs reward while walking to your own ship as an example. This subject is not going away and I support it fully..no matter what

it is their job, they're the game lords, game masters, game creators, if they can add drifter content then they can and should add all other content. you guys provided them an easy cop out from creating story content with that stance which is why eve takes so long to even progress further.
fact is still after all these years you can ask a new player what is the lore behind this and that faction and they'll answer atleast "welp amarr are religious fanatics with a huge titan that looks like a *****".
fact is no one understand whats going on and when and why.. that's hype train not content.
give us content and you'll then get provided with ship rebalancing, juggling stat numbers here and there, receiving UI updates as content with no story behind it all.

and CCP has fundamentally misunderstood how come their current player levels are this low right now and sinking even further. like it or not buddy.. your demographic population is changing.. pvp'ers should be forced to go find real good fights and allow us to Walk in Stations in peace.
so debate on as much as you want to.. push us out or away and your numbers will continue to drop even further. its exciting to go to various websites discussing how eve treats newbs, new players, and pushes them away at the same time cause the vets have no more victims to abuse.

73% of EVE characters stay in high security space. 62% of EVE subscribers barely PvP. 40% of all new accounts just "level up their Ravens". Probably that's why PvE content in EVE Online is sub-par and CCP is head over heels for PvP...

Well they were calling it Project Legion, anyway. Usually a name with "Project" in it is not always the final name (e.g production title or working title as it's called). Nope, no mention of it recently, but then like WoD they haven't announced a closure to it as they did there. So likely they are still working on it, but just likely in it's alpha stage with a small band of core programmers.

What about a disco? Everyone loves dancing and we might even find mates and it would definitely help growing the population too! But that would only work if we could take someone with us into our quarters!

Just like you do in games with Avatar gameplay.
Death and Glory!
Well fun is also good.

Likely the focus will be on Valkyrie for now. Why, you holding out hopes for WiS? You do know they disbanded that team long ago, restructured CCP and "back burner" isn't even in any existing context with what CCP has become? But keep up the good laughs with these threads, always good for some late night humor. Just don't get yourself all ragequitty worked up over it like some have done hehehe. our avatars should be wearing armor not clothes, they should have atleast a flightsuit on not leagher pants. and why is ccp afraid of skirts and dresses? clearly there are womem that play this game seagull and that awfully hot redhead is not the only girls in this game.

None of my friends want to actually see me staggering to the head, crawling back to my bunk, and summarily puking all over my fedo.
None of my enemies want me hanging out by their CQ door with a hacking kit and a rusty straight razor.
CCP has done us all a favor.
Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

Because they fear sexualization will "offend" the US customers. Remember: Nipples are monsters.

(the link is another space flight game that "attempted walk-in-stations too") I agree, but that's because I'm a bittervet who still clings to her "it's CCP what do you expect" point of view (it was reinforced about a month ago). Ha ha, b ut dont forget that CCP showed us something more even earlier on Fanfest with demo that was completely scraped. Nothing of it is now in game. And people were doing their own videos about how it could have been for new player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5IOVRRV-Ow Nothing ever happened like that. Its something like a sad feeling when you see it from future into past. |
