What If...
ARMOR had a base value of damage it absorbed. Like say for 400mm Plates, they would outright absorb 200 points of damage, based on the thickness of the armor.
Friggies, scream. Battleships dream... But before you Friggies scream too loud... Or you Battleships dream of being invincible against friggies...
Further, what if real critical damage was incorporated, where said armour, though protecting a given number of HIGH MED and LOW components (more or less based on armour size. You get what you pay for in weight etc...) DID NOT protect critical components outside of the said protected slots of the postulated "ARMOUR BELT" And of course, large caliber weapons penetrating the ARMOR BELT could still damage and destroy critical components.
Thus friggies could get consistent "critical hits" on unprotected components on larger ships. Perhaps even things like drives, sensors, drone-bays, and cargo depending on how the ARMOR BELT would be "Rigged"...

Tactical strikes on critical systems (possibly different areas of a ship you would or COULD "lock onto") would be really awesome but it seems as though it would be really complicated. It'd be cool if BS could only lock onto the actual hull of a ship which would be protected by the most armor but on the otherhand, the only actual way to destroy the ship. Then cruisers could lock onto things like engines, warp drives, capacitors, etc and frigs would be able to lock onto non-critical things like guns, sensor arrays, etc and some of the other actual modules of the ship.
Skills would allow you to lock "up" (for instance so a gang of well trained frig pilots could still take out a BS)
Modules would allow you to lock "down" (for instance so a BS could hit those subcritical systems, albeit taking sig radius into account)
You'd get mails for disabling a ship as well as killing it. But if you were a cruiser gang and managed only to strand a ship before you left the person would still be able to perform repairs (this would take time like skill training, better skills would decrease this time), at least until your heavy hitters came into to finish the job. It'd probably help with blob wars. Shear DOT would not be the only concern (and thus making every ship useful to the gang despite disparity in speed/damage), fast striking cruisers and frig gangs could rove around disabling ships, leaving them stranded while their slower moving BS counterparts could come in behind them.
Would make for much much much more interesting combat. But I bet we won't see it anytime soon. It'd be a major departure from your typical "do big damage" RPG. The moderators here are excellent at policing signatures. |

I say biscuits since they come in a tube-like arrangement and can happily be munched a few at a time. If they are cakes, they are pointlessly small.
To the main poster, the problem would be that frig plates would absorb basically nothing , making them worthless, while BS plates would absord stupid amounts of punishment. Your idea is alright, but it would radically change the entire concept of combat in eve.
On a side note, backdoor bandit has SURELY set somekind of de-railing record ...

Sorry, I must have misjudged the thread, I read the OP and thought that this was obviously one of those slightly deranged threads full of nonsense that i'm so fond of. Giant Squids, Wolverines, Free Hats, that kind of thing.

I only have 638 posts? Wow I'm slacking.
Had ten times that much in two years on planetside forums, I'm sure not going to get to that number at this rate.
If you're on IE, pretend this is transparent while you get a better browser. |
