Sounds like a nice mini drama, record it and play it on eve-tv for the next broadcast.
Best of luck.

i'll be honest. it's not been done before and we don't know for sure it will help us. but unless we try, we gain nothing. if it doesn't work only thing we have lost is a few hour in the day for a few people. got to be worth it imo.
however, if it works. well it will make deployment smoother and it's something CCP can do for other large patches

Good to hear that you guys are taking a proactive approach as opposed to a reactive one.
Also if all goes to plan will revelations be rolled out of the 28th as planned.

Okay I am glad all the Euros are saying this is okay, what the CRAP is CCP thinking. Thrusday is a major US holiday which means US players will be lining up to enjoy some play time. So you are gonna test stuff on the holiday? Guys this is seriously crazy save it for Friday but PLEASE do not do this on a major US holiday and risk making the US players have to sit on their thumbs!

It's not about when it goes down, but when/if it comes back up.

Honestly informing the community of whats going on ftw. Delays/DTs are so much easier to endure that way.
Good Luck and may it improve patch deployment.

i would suggest keeping various shamen/priests/witchdoctors on site before startup. both on the 23rd and 28th.
maybe even sacrifice a few virgins and goats, just to play on the safe side.
thx for the heads up! g/l !

GREAT IDEA and GREAT NEWS! Really. Just, uh, ummm, why did it take YEARS of customers bleeding out the eyes with suffering from bad/sloppy patch procedures for you guys to come up with this? Just saying..... But, in all seriousness, and with all sincerity, good luck. I REALLY hope you learn something from the process. And even if you don't, KEEP TRYING. Anything you can do to get these nightmare patches under control is a good thing. Cheers all! Let me know if my services are needed to sacrifice small animals for good omens and smooth sailing... *

You know this attitude is pathetic, I would call for the same consideration for a major holliday ANYWHERE a big player base was. It is not about it being US based but rather a fact that 30% or better of the subscribers are about to have a major free day at once and they are doing a test that in theory could ruin that day for those players.

Edited by: Feng Schui on 23/11/2006 05:39:22 ok... for the USA naysayers...
I'm on EST.. which means, I'm "closer" to GMT than central / west coast peeps..
downtime is 6am - 7am for me.. CST: 5am - 6am PST: 3am - 4am
and I am missing a timezone.. or i suck at timezones.. one of the other.. something like that.
So if, lets say... server doesn't come back up until noon GMT (12:00 eve-time)... that is still 8 am for ME..
If you are trying to play Eve Online (or any MMORPG).. that early in the morning (unless you work 3rd shift).. and it is your day off..
Go seek help now
On second thoughts, here I was getting all happy about Revelations being patched early

Excellent idea. And to all those who are concerned about having TQ potentially crash, I believe shark pointed out they're using seperate databases. Even if it crashes it will come back up soon enough. The fewer problems we have when Revelations is deployed the better. I'd gladly sacrifice a few hours of play for a patch that doesn't require crash fixes the day it comes out. Minister of Leaky Ethics and Spiffiness |

Cool, looks like I was right. You're testing the deployment during downtime, and if all goes well the downtime won't be extended much. Neat idea. |

Weren't most of the problems with the Dragon release related to the differences between the databases between Singularity and Tranquility? I fail to see how testing with the test database will prevent future problems like Dragon experienced.
More testing before release is good, though.

How certain are you that after the upgrade the downgrade will be just as smooth?
As far as I know there has never been a downgrade of TQ like that, so we might just loose a day or two of TQ due to issues downgrading and starting up the market or the agent missions and so on.
Anyway I'll see about sacrificing a goat or two and of course setting a very long skill in training. ------------------------------------------- Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. If you have a problem with that please feel free not to tell me. |

finnaly a good approach!
extend the dt for 1h everey day if you need to, its a small price to pay for smooth release, losing a hour or two per day is small thing compared to broken game for months :)

Well, you don't have to worry. We are not actually upgrading anything or changing anything thats related to the normal operation of TQ. We will deploy the Kali code in a separate folder on the cluster, running on a separate database server, so the normal TQ code/database will not be touched at all. All we have to do to revert is to kill the Kali processes on the cluster and start up TQ like normally. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

Great work guys, as someone who has DT from 7pm-8pm every day and is completely effected by any DT outages, take all the time you need, the shortsighted people here whinging are the same people who would be whinging if the patch were deployed with major bugs due to a lack of testing, some people will never be happy.
