It can't just be a sandbox for one part of the community and not for everyone else? I am mainly a missioner and have been ganked twice in my marauder, it was a painful experience but I have learnt from it and not been ganked since. You misunderstand the term sandbox, you can attempt to build a sandcastle, and others can attempt to kick it down. You're not guaranteed to succeed at either, but you can tilt the odds in your favour by doing stuff like playing with others. EvE is a sandbox. However, there is only a limited amount of sand. If you want to build your sand castle, you have to be prepared to protect it from others who may want to build bigger castles near yours. Beachy metaphors aside, EvE is not a solo game. There is no such thing as "just running missions" or "just mining" or "PvE". Everything you do involves interacting with other players. Think about this: every time you run a mission, more stuff gets injected into the EvE economy. Players in EvE sell stuff to make ISK, and the amount they make from selling it is based entirely on the player-driven market. Thus, if more stuff is being sold than there is demand for, prices drop and everyone selling stuff loses. By running missions and selling your loot/LP rewards, you are engaging in PvP against other players on the market. The same applies to mining, industry, etc. Have you ever stopped to consider that maybe your competition will come shoot you in order to prevent you from lowering their profit margins? Or maybe to create more demand for your particular ship/modules? Everything in EvE is PvP. Welcome to the sandbox. My Many Misadventures I seek to create content, not become content. Those who're gonna gank your ship will generally be using ships suited best for doing so... Taloses and Tornadoes come to mind. If you see a gaggle of those COMING RIGHT AT YOU, then it's definitely time to get the heck out of there. Simply not being there when the hit squad lands is the best tank of all.
