Is this intentional, just so PvPers have it easy mopping them up?
Whenever the AI starts targeting them I mash the recall hotkey but it literally takes them 5 seconds to stop what they're doing and head home. It seems like the technology in EVE is advanced enough that drones could immediately respond and haul balls for safety when commanded to. |

Make believe tech != reality. I'm not against the commands being more responsive, but I think what you're describing is due to EVE's server ticks. Not sure they can really address this specific issue because I doubt it's something they put in on purpose, just a side effect of how the game itself works.

Drones have a 4 second ROF, and server ticks are every 1 second.

Drones revenge. They "know" that they are commodities, mechanical slaves and so they respond slowly to the voice of command, do their jobs halfheartedly and tirelessly, so they lag behind like suicidal herd animals hoping to get taken down by scavengers.
Maybe we should ask for drone options that make them feel better. A drone support group module, or some such.

If it would make them feel better, we could start calling them Semi-autonomous Combat Utility Modules. A name like that should boost morale.
No, but really: drone controls are just slow. Always have been. Probably on the back end though as with most back end stuff we can at best speculate as to what's going on. |

Server ticks is the likely source of the problem and there is nothing that can be done if that is the truth.
If you recall as soon as you see they are taking damage and they are dying before they get back then they are to far from home. Answer - keep them closer to home so they can return BEFORE they die. |

Semi-autonomous Combat Utility Modules tend to go all rogue on capsulers. Just saying.

Why are drones so slow to recall?
Because the ishtar has to be bad at *something*.

But it's already crap at offering engaging gameplay, fun counterplay options and offering an enjoyable fleet concept to fight against.

I get this, but why should it affect whether they respond to commands or not? If they are recalled immediately after shooting, they immediately stop their "shooting state" and begin their "returning to drone bay state" and should fly home as fast as possible, but this doesn't always seem to happen. I wonder if they take "engine damage" too easily. |

If the weapon modules are still cycling they cannot engage a different command until it's done.
Of course in reality the problem is that drone responsive mechanically is terrible across the board.

The reason for that is that the drone:player ratio can hit 5:1 (and it used to be worse!), and then after a certain number of players are on grid the hamsters become unhappy.
Well, and they're also hooked into the pirate AI, so occasionally they get interesting ideas in their little mechanical heads. Every drone is a bit rogue.
