EVE used to be playable at low fps. But now im getting around 10 which, though still playable, starts to become irritating. --

/signed /bump My FPS went down by 20%-30% Post Dragon, got about half of that back from hardware upgrades. I am not at what I would consider top of the line, but my 7900GT 512MB isn't BAD by any stretch of the imagination, IMHO. I have fast caching memory enabled to make use of my DDR3 card memory and have tried everything (within reason that makes any lick of sense) in the "boost your FPS" thread! Then comes Rev Chapt 1 and here we go again! Another 20%-30% drop in frame rate to what I was getting before the patch. I am now WORSE off after two MAJOR patches than I was BEFORE them!! This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE CCP!!! This TWICE in a row in under 5 months. Large spawn missions and fleet combat are back down into the SINGLE DIGIT FPS for me. No one can convince me that it's NOT the client this time. Lots of Fanbois tried to tell me it was my machine last time. I never REALLY believed them, but you have to have an open mind in the world of system building and fixing, so I gave the Devs the benefit of the doubt. NOT this time! Yeah, if the seamless map stars are the source of fps drops, then please, hit it with the nerf bat. Hit it HARD.
I'm gullible so I was really happy to see a quick note about "improved graphics optimizations" or whatever the news-speak was before the patch was released. Considering this game uses an inordinate amount of CPU compared to the GPU that it *should* be using... I was really hoping to see improved performance, graphically speaking.
Nope.
Surely it's possible to work on that trinity graphics engine (isn't that what it's still called?) a bit to implement more hardware acceleration from the graphics card and not the CPU. Please?

I noticed the exact same thing when I logged in last night for the first time since the new patch. I used to push around 80 fps in low pop areas, around 50 in combat, over a 100 fps while warping, and around 200 sitting in a station.
Post patch I'm only getting around 50 fps per second in low pop with all my UI hidden. I haven't tried any combat yet, but around more populated areas my fps drops 35 to 40.
I know many might say, "hey you're getting over 30, be happy." Truth of the matter is there is a noticeable difference for anything under 60 fps. With my specs this is a little frustrating, especially when I run other games a lot better. I take care of my computer too, regularly cleaning out the registry and defragging the hard drive.
My Specs: P4 3.6 HT 2 gigs of Kingston 400mhz DDR Intel 915GAV Motherboard with 800 front side bus BFG Geforce 7900 GTX OC 512mb PCIe.
CCP, please give us a response, even if it's just "we know we nerfed the fps, and it's not getting better." I just want to know if this is something I'll have to live with. But I hope not.

Edited by: Sirex007 on 01/12/2006 15:56:38 Edited by: Sirex007 on 01/12/2006 15:56:05 what annoys me is that the map is buggy anyhow.
if you set it to flatten your left mose moves the map about on a 2d axis (as expected), but then come out of the map and go back in. - the left button now rotates the map in 3D, even though the "flatten" button is still enabled. you have to hit "unflatten" then "reflatten" again.
its because of this fancy unneeded animation they make the map flip about like an idiot and forgot to actually reenable to flatten mode when you reopen the map.
i put a petition in for it, hopefully it'll get fixed.

Yep, EVE is pretty much unplayable on my desktop now because of the ultra low FPS. Thank goodness I primarily use a gaming laptop now.
At least one of my corpmates has the same problem. Thus, I too, vote for the on/off starmap integration option if it is indeed the cause. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Tried to reinstall EVE and I did a 3dmark run because I was afraid something might be wrong with my hardware. Turned out I got more 3dmarks than I ever had but EVE's maximum frame rate just dropped pretty steeply. It does seem to average almost the same fps as before, but the maximum fps is way lower. So now when Im just hanging in space I got 40-50fps but while fighting it can drop to 15 or 10fps.
I wish you could turn of the new Stars in the background. It's the only thing added as far as I can tell. --

Edited by: Ask Jeeves on 04/12/2006 22:07:46 Edited by: Ask Jeeves on 04/12/2006 22:06:49 im also in the same boat. before this patch i was complaining about low fps on my new pc, but now it's much worse. before i would hardly ever drop below 60 unless I was doing a mission or in a fight (and then i would be crawling around at 5-30 fps), but now ill be just undocking from a station and be below 40 at times. also people who say 30fps is totaly smooth and your eye's cant detect it are totaly wrong. If my pc is at 30 fps then it feels very sluggish and crappy, totaly unsmooth in every way. maybe thats just some computers which feel like that though..
theres nothing wrong with my pc though, for a start it beats all the benchmarks ive seen for half life lost coast stress test with same resolution and settings turned on.

I run an Athlon 2700+ with 1.5gig ram and a Geforce 6600GT vid card. I have always gotten between 25 to 60 FPS as a standard. I noticed only a 2 to 3 FPS drop because of the patch. And I don't think the map in the background is the only thing to blame for the FPS drop. If you notice, everything looks slightly different. The lightings a brighter, and the colors are a little different. If you think about it, everything on the screen is made up of little colored dots to make the picture. Changing a few thousand of the to white is not going to drag the system down that much. There has got to me more to it. But for those of you who belive that the map background is the ONLY thing causeing your FPS drop, I to ask the DEVs to add an OFF option for the map.

Yes, remove this useless animation ... It's fun the first time but after ...
You lost time for set new destination and if you push on ctrl + scroll (or other). You PC lag and you go to starmap ... I have almost lost a ship because that !!!
You try to lock and scroll down and you go on the starmap ... With this great animation, you lost precious second and you can't make something for stop that ... You wait for close (lag) and control again your ship.

There is an option in the map menue where you can set the animation from normal to fast to instant
However, got the same fps problems since revelations too, my framerate went down by about 50%. Had about 70-80 fps outside station pre revelations, and now its about 30-40.
To anyone who thinks that anything over 30fps would not be noticeable: thats in perfect conditions, framerate drops MUCH lower in combat/asteroid fields. in a standard mission with a few enemies that are fireing at me i have about 15-20fps at best.
Imho its caused by all those stars in the background (from the map) plz give an option to turn them off!
Any word from the Devs?

Same problem. Honestly with the new contracts system (which they did improve significantly with the "simple view" option), the poor fps, I'm not really happy playing the game anymore. I'm just logging in to sell stuff, and waiting for some word on stability and graphic lag fixes.
Btw, I'm posting this while waiting for my character to log in, as for the 3rd time I've gotten stuck entering station. I know this is separate, but I'm so unhappy with the game right now I just have to complain. Looking foward to Vanguard if this game doesn't improve within a reasonable timeframe. Christmas seems reasonable.

However, its still far from my usual 60-70fps (again right outside station), so i think the seamless map still needs some more love, optimisation-wise.
Maybe only display the map-starfield in the background when the map is actually activated? I know, there would prolly be some loading hickups then, but i would prefer occasional loading lag to constant bad framerate.

Im really displased with this performance drop. We put EVERYTHING off what we can to have 2-3 more FPS in fleet combat and they just... no words for that :( And i dont have crapy computer its CCP fault.

This still needs addressing, implement an option to disable it or something. |

I have the following: P4 @ 4.23 GHZ 1gig pc4200 7800gtx
pre-revelations, the game ran very, very smoothly, but the addition of the background star field (this is not the full star map I'm talking about, this is the background in the normal game window which displays all of the solar systems as points) my framerate dropped substantially.
It is especially noticable in warp, most likely because it's forcing the renderer to work with multiple transparent, overlapping layers.
While it is a very cool feature to see a representation of our eve universe in the background during normal play, an on/off toggle for those of us who are concerned with getting a good framerate (I'd much prefer a more smooth framerate to seeing an inordinate number of rendered points) over eye candy. I'd much rather turn on some type of antialiasing or anisotropic filtering, than have the background starmap present.
Prior to revelations, I was able to do this, post revelations, enabling FSAA or Anisotropic filtering reduces the framerate by far too much.
