So the life on these expensive jewels is rather annoying. Its a miracle I haven't lost a set yet because they expired.
You pay over 100 million for a somewhat decent improvement to the Sisters Core Probes. The value of these just don't seem right.
When I am focused on scanning I can scan out most systems within the time they expire (most wormholes that is), as most people can using a Max Skilled scanner.
However:
- They don't allow any distractions
- They cost more than any probe, yet their life is the worst.
- When you're updating mapping tools as you go and you like to be detailed its easy to forgot about them and get really close to not recalling them in time.
Anyone else agree? Not really sure why this would be intended to be this way by CCP. Will to listen if someone wants to explain it to me. Is it because they're storyline, not faction?
So my suggestion simply is to increase the life span of the probe. |

They don't go "poof" - they just end up back in your cargo hold. Unless CCP drastically changed something while I've been deployed.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So, why do I post here?
I'm stubborn.

Ii haven't used them, but I did look at their attributes and see that short life. I saw nothing in their description to tell me that they automatically collect themselves.

Scan probes automatically return to your cargo hold when they expire. Unless CCP changed something. The only time this is not true is when you leave system due to a game crash and they are still out in space.

Then it's been changed since back when I used to use them. The last time I let probes expire, they disappeared, but that was years ago.

Frequently, when hunting for someone who is cloaked and may be attempting to log off, I will move my probes off d-scan in order to make him think it is safe to decloak. So long as you are still undocked in the system when the probes expire, they will return to your bay.

I think perhaps CCP ought to change the description of probes......
For posting an idea into F&I:
come up with idea, try and think how people could abuse this, try to fix your idea - loop the process until you can't see how it could be abused, then post to the forums to let us figure out how to abuse it.....
If your idea can be abused, it WILL be.

When the timers on probes expire, you jump through a gate or wormhole, or you dock, probes return to your hold. Has been this way for at least the last 1.5 years, though you'd have to dig through patch notes to find exactly when that change was made.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.

Afterthought: Does anyone know if you have your probes out and get blapped for whatever reason while they are out, if you can bring another scan ship back and reconnect to them?

Well this is good to know, thought when they expired they disappeared. Now I won't worry so much. You guys don't think their life span should be longer though? |

No. It adds an interesting tweak that gives a very slight drawback for them being the strongest probes available.

setting aside the timer if you cannot remember to watch your probe time use the Sisters probes. 1 point less in base strength would be almost imperceptible in your scanning and they have really long timers and they are cheaper on top of it. |

Tried, didn't work. Probes somewhat belong to your vessel :( . There was the idea of RSS probes not appearing on dscan like two months back, wonder what happened to that one. If they did that, that'd be an incentive finally to not just use combat probes, all the time. (Since they only fail to scan high-end DEDs and sleeper caches)
Well this is good to know, thought when they expired they disappeared. Now I won't worry so much. Their lifespan is long enough to scan an abandonned wormhole (since you're likely to use them with a dedicated scanning ship), dunno why you'd want to have them linger for even longer. |

There is zero need at all for any probe timers to be increased. Actually, the argument could be made to decrease them all even further in order to make covops probers actually decloak to relaunch probes more often.
