Greetings,
Well as one of those folks that happen to have trained all those skills long prior to the release of exploration I was more than happy to see it finally hit the servers with kali.
What I'd like to see here is more of a discussion related to exploring new areas/content found by exploration probing. This is really not the spot to discuss Probing as this link has a wonderfully written guide on how to.
Im more looking for info on "what is found, and possibly where (0.0, low sec, high sec etc). Maybe get some feedback going to CCP on this specific topic.
I've tried the last few days (and nights) to scan for anything pertaining to a "cosmic encounter" and have come up short. I've mainly worked a few 05/06/07 systems as thats where I am atm, so I didn't have high hopes, but was thinking "maybe" i'd find something. Have any of you? High sec? Or is it all in low/no sec?
Some posts have indicated that these sites "move around" to various systems, in an as yet unknown fashion. While more data is needed, it has been reported that there are close to 500 sites (rumored?) that pop up, move, and go away in some random fashion.
While I don't want a free pass (or anyone else to have a free pass) in finding these, I wonder if there would be a way for us to "get a clue" as to where one might look (constellation wide system msg?, agent reward rumor?) as to an approximate location. Or would that be giving too much away? maybe its just too early to judge the difficulty in finding these, or the luck, I don't know.
What do the rest of you think? Have you tried? Care/don't care? Thoughts...?

I think its a great addition to the game.
I thought it was all low-sec, but maybe I'm just imagining that.
Maybe the whole point of this "Exploration" stuff is to give people other than huge corporations the exclusive finds of 10/10 complexes, high-end loot and rather unique stuff.
I remember something about "between the stars" in a Dev post, but seeing as that we can only get around in a solar system right now, I don't see how that's literal.
And is this "Expeditions" tab in our Journals now related directly to Exploration? Can we subcontract something out from the Explorations? Is it rare asteroids? rare NPC spawns/complexes? Its just so vague. Where do we start?? ---------- My Sig is CCP DEV and Moderator-Proof. but not pink proof hahahahhahahahahahahaha -PINK Crap! Pink! Aieee! |

I jumped onto this post to see what yall had to say as I don't know much about exploring yet and am interested in learning more.
I read the part about finding stuff between the stars as well or solar systems and it occured to me that there may be solar systems not on the map that you can go to via exploring. I noticed a probe, after the recent upgrade to kali, in market that talked about scanning on a constellation level, so perhaps this has something to do with that.
When I heard about exploring I was mainly hoping for hidden pirate bases to pve at for loot. This would create access to difficult pve that most corps cannot access due to the giant corps camping the well known or only 10/10 or high end complex spaces. Other than that I am still learning about exploring and will report back with findings if I ever figure out how to do it.

I'm keen to get started with it. I just have to wait for astrometrics 5 :(.
I wasn't willing to train it before the release of the patch in case they decided to reduce the requirements for the exploration probes.
I'm still concerned that they might reduce it, or they might reduce it for some of the probes and I don't need astrometrics 5 for anything else so I'm still hesitating.

Greets,
Well as luck would have it, I finally managed to scan down a plex today. I started with the gravi based quests, since i was in caldari space at the time, and found a yellow circle marked "deadspace signature". I had posted a question about wheather you can scan mission runners by mistake,(or intentional) and still haven't gotten an answer as to which you might be scanning down at the time.
Here is the first probe results A scan hit
I think the better results you get, the the lil cirlces change color, with red being, "good luck with that" to yellow, "getting warmer", to green, "now you getting there"
After narrowing my searchs a few more probes (better resolutition) I found this.. The gate..
I was able to jump the gate using a Battle crusier, and was set upon by about 30+ drones, some id never seen before. No speciality ones (web/scram) but they did quite a bit of damage, getting my shields down to about 7% with 16k starting shields. They also killed my t2 hornets :P . I was chattting in corp at the time so if I had been more attentive and killed them faster the damage would not have been as bad.
The drones dropped the standard alloys, and while I salvaged every wreck, I got no parts from anything. Bummer. Was hoping for some parts like the ones that drop in the new regions. The DS place was kinda cool too, a little different. Oh and when I first jumped the gate, i got a message in chat box, in green, saying "rogue drones are very unpredictable, caution should be used. I got this msg in every chat box I had open, tho none of my corp/alliance/gang/channel friends in them got the message.
Heres the complex Distant view
Anyway, thought I'd share....good luck on your explorations, and post any findings you may come accross, should you wish to..

Edited by: Kyreax on 02/12/2006 21:19:01 I'm wondering if this is all a "chance-based" sort of thing that activates for each player when you use the probes to look for the "cosmic signatures" ?
For instance: when you launch scan probes, depending on the security rating of the system, there is a chance that a random deadspace plex or the like will generate, and then it will only stick around for a certain window of time.
Otherwise, with 5000+ systems, how likely is it that you will actually find one of these sites...randomly "jumping" around?
Also, before this patch, there was a similar thing happening in Gallente COSMOS: a deadspace drone area called "Aether Drone Signature" was randomly hopping around in a system (I forget which one). Sometimes there were 2-3 of these, but they even showed up on the overview, so no scanner needed. Everyone could see them.
Warping in revealed a mother of a drone so tough that I couldn't break it's tank with my Brutix Battlecruiser and highly-skilled 5 Tech 2 Hammerheads. I'd never seen this type of drone before, nor heard of it. I had to warp out and grab my Dominix, but the plex had vanished by the time I returned (10 minutes), and this was before the patch.
Cool. I hope Exploration keeps going like this. Its a great element of the game.
And congrats on scanning down you first Exploration site! ---------------------------------------------------

I've been scanning several systems with Quest probes now and I've not found anything yet, except sometimes a friendly ship instead of an actual deadspace
This is very discouraging, if only I found a few empty deadspace pockets I'd already be happier then I am now. Probably spend 5-8 hours looking through various 0.0 systems (several in Great Wildlands, and several in the new drone systems).
Usually do around 3-4 scans per system, is this not enough?
I personally would love to see a probe which at least gives an indication if there's something worth looking for. Because this exploration thus far is very costly and hasnt resulted in anything

While warping to a station, my ship stops mid warp and this happens. A message box popped up, which says "Keep your distance stranger, we dont like nexcomers!" Unfortunately my ship warped away before I could boomark, no astrometrics 5 so cant probe for it.... Any1 have astrometrics 5 convo me in game for the syatem name (in Empire space)

I miss the old scan probes/scanning system, the current one is worthless. They should remove the chance based part, make complexes spawn anywhere in a system and add cosmic signatures back onto the directional scanning.
Then instead of waiting for scan result number 7, hoping this one gets a result is much rather travel from system to system looking for clues regarding a possible dead space signature. After you've found these clues the actual scan probing should start.

One would think that the complexes wouldn't be random. It would add another level of play to the game. You could sell BMs for complexes (or traps). Also having Asteroid belts like Kaaii found would add to Corp strategies too. With the new Contracting systems you could get an explorer corp for hire going too.

No, they are random.
Devs said they jump around, and only last for a limited time, then disappear.
You can only find these sites with the Exploration probes. ---------------------------------------------------

Haunted Yard Screenshot
The label on the map says "Haunted Yard" when I was close to the date so I think it's the name or catagory of the deadspace.
Found it approx. 3au away from a planet using "Magnetometric Quest"-probes. Everything I've found so far had this distance so I think "cheating" by placing directly Sift probes and hoping for a lucky hit won't work.
The complex was accessible for ships up to Cruisers. Pretty tough... hard hitting drones including two scrambler fitted drones. These drones are not on the screenshot so I think another group of drones spawned while I was changing ships.
The loot was very disappointing. Perhaps 200-300K in minerals. I don't know what I was supposed to do with the Leaking Casks. They didn't contain any loot and Codebreakers and Analyzers were not usable on them.

Omber With 4 gold, 7 silver and 11 omber but they werent very dense
Havent managed to track the 3rd closer than 1.07 au, will try again
One thing I havent done is scanned a system with all 4 probe types grav, mag, ladar and radar

It also means you don't waste any time when CCP reduces the probe skill requirements as they appear to have sneakily done with the patch. Glad I didn't start Astormetrics 5 now.

Thanks for noticing that. After spending neary two weeks training up to astrometrics V so I could specialize in exploration, I find out that CCP changes the requirements for exploration probes. As you can imagine, I am very angry at CCP for wasting two of my weeks. CCP needs to learn a thing or two about consistency.

Edited by: Zaphod Bee on 06/12/2006 06:45:37 Our group was lucky enough to find a multi-part encounter expedition tonight. The mission consisted of about five encounters with rogue drones, the last of which was in a 0.0 system. It was all very interesting, the drone loot was good, and there was a surprise drop (very nice) waiting at the end. One recommendation- have a group ready to do a multi-part encounter if you find one. You are quite limited on the time to get to the next system in the encounter. Our first encounter was in a 0.3 system, so the drones were fairly tough (scramblers and battleship-sized controllers) and the amount of compounds dropped was good.
Cheers to CCP,
Zaphod

Ok, well thanks for posting the change to Exploration probes...I just looked in game and yes, I can use all of them as I sit here training Astro 5 I guess that saved me 10 days.
Did I see that pic right and you found Jaspet and Hemorphite in a .5 They aren't in the same shot, so it could be faked but I don't know why anyone would do that. Guess i need to have my mining Apoc ready to go
