I' wondering this becuase I took my interceptor to drone space today, just to see if its fun.. Saw a few spawns. ect. few souls in local.
Anyway, I saw wrecks on the gates of battle cruisers .. cruisers.. ceptors.. ect. And I checked them out, and most of them were full of weapons, ammo, modules. I think the best I foumd was a domination adaptive nano plating (which probably isn't worth much anyway) but if I sat around and looted it all, I could have probably made some iskies..
so, why arn't people looting these like they loot cans?

People dont loot cans either... you make more money not looting them since its such a pain to wheel them in.
But maybe longer range tractor beams are coming SoonÖ.

I think he's talking about player-dropped cans. The reason is probably because some people think they need to get salvaging skills to get loot from wrecks.

ISK farmers don't loot.
Drones can't shoot wrecks yet.
Everything beyond tractor beam range is more prone to getting shot than looted/salvaged.

no it's probably that people can't keep track of which wrecks have already been looted, so they can't be arsed to fly over to each one again to find that last one they missed. i know i stopped looting mission rats altogether - untill i get salvaging, of course, then i'll loot/salvage as i go ========================================== Iy |

Im talking about player wrecks.
I just grabbed 3x 125mm railgun II from a wreck near tash murkon prime, thats 3 mill bam.
and as for flagging, thats only 15 minutes, in which time my ceptor is 10 jumps away doing something else ^_^

Looting wrecks is a major PITA. I am of the opinion that CCP has added wrecks to drive people away from doing missions.
Look at the facts: Now EVERY ship destroyed generates a wreck wether its useful or not. you have to spend a LOT more time to check them out. Loot seems to be sparser and of lower value than pre-patch missions are now scannable so anyone can warp in on you.
Sorry guys wrecks AREN'T an improvement. Turns out we weren't playing the game the way CCP thought it should be played so they're going to force us to do something different (like WoW, Gears of War, Neverwinter II).

I'm still doing missions, and not bothering to loot/destroy wrecks afterwards...
I can push out about 10-15mil ISK per hour (perhaps more), rushing through missions and not looting......leaves about 150-250 wrecks behind, possibly more, that I just don't see the point in wasting the time to check them all when 75% of them are normally empty (and it takes about an hour to do them all).
This opinion on wrecks may change slightly, once I get access to a medium (or even large) tractor beam, but I can't see it ever changing to a positive one, I'm afraid......I can see the "realism" reasons for changing from cans to wrecks, but it just makes missions a boring grind if you spend 10-15 minutes killing everything then an hour looting the wrecks.

Yep, the two people above me pretty much said it. I've stopped looting anything in missions since wrecks have tacked on an unreasonable amount of time if I actually want to go check them out. Before with loot cans, it was relatively easy to pick them up with my tractor beam while in the midst of combat, so I could kill two birds with one stone. Now it's impossible to sort out the mess that is wrecks while fighting, so i'm forced to wait until i'm completely done with combat before I actually go check the wrecks. At that point i'm usually not too thrilled to go sifting through 20 some odd wrecks to see if anything good dropped. I'm waiting to see what changes they make tuesday before I start looting again.

From what I remember from a dev-post, somewhere on these forums, Tuesday's change is only going to make wrecks different ONCE you've checked them......which means you'd still need to trawl around every single one to check if they're empty or not.
So, to me, that means no change and I'll still not be looting them...

What I love is how so many people just say screw looting but then call you a thief when you come by and salvage them. I cleared four rats in a belt, looted, salvaged (one taking 13 cycles to complete) and then sat around for a few more minutes and no one showed. Salvaged 8 more wrecks, jumped to the next belt where the original owner was busily stripping asteroids and I get called a thief in local a few minutes later. I guess they saw my positive sec status and noted the fact I was flashing their ass and decided they were offended or something.
I will say that wrecks have changed how I will be interacting with others since I now have to loot containers I never did before just so I can salvage the remains. I might have to turn to piracy if more meatheads are gonna be lazy and then make such silly comments.

Picture the scene...
You've just cleared the battlefield of mission-NPCs, and you're now faced with anything up to 40 wrecks which may or may not be empty. You have a (sensible) choice of two ships to do the looting in: a battleship with a cargo hold of about 350m3 and a top-speed of about 140m/s, or an industrial with a cargo hold of about 8200m3 and a top-speed of about 225m/s. The battleship, obviously, can take out the wrecks relatively quickly (either with a single 250mm railgun, or with a cruise missile if really bored) but has the agility of a small planet, and also may need to make two or three trips to loot everything on a "good" mission. The industrial, however, can do everything in one trip, but you're stuck sat next to a wreck because the single 150mm railgun is painfully slow in destroying looted wrecks.
I've tested both methods......with missions I can clear in anything from 2 minutes up to 20 minutes for the multi-area stuff, I'm then looking at anything from 5 minutes to 90 minutes to do the looting.
Conclusions? Anything more than 5 wrecks, anything more than 20km away; looting gets ignored and I leave the wrecks there......of course, I reserve the right to change my opinion once a) I get access to a tractor beam, and b) once Tuesday's patch is implemented.

Third option which you obviously haven't thought of yet... a cruiser. A stabber with cargo expanders (600+ m3 with standard ones), MWD (bookmark the location and come back after completing the mission so that the MWD works) and 5 tractors makes cleaning up the old loot cans very easy. Even without the tractors it's damn fast and you can fit an MWD and an AB in that case so you can go a bit slower if you aren't moving too far between cans.
With the new wrecks the cruisers have a nice number of high slots for fitting tractors and salvagers. Don't have salvaging yet so no idea what the optimal ratio of tractor/salvager will be.
Similar setup is possible with the thorax as well and I find it's actually a lot better at approaching cans/wrecks at speed with mwd, doesn't seem to bounce as far from the cans/wrecks if you are going too fast.
I'd assume there is also similar possibilities with the other race's cruisers too.

to OP why not loot? because everything drops a wreck, whereas pre revelations only things with loot dropped cans. its simple a pain in the *** to check everything, and, once you've looted the wreckage,it still clutters your overview, so unless you actualy pay attention you could very well end up trying to loot the same wreckage. Normaly it wouldent be a problem but, its just annoying to check anything. i dont loot unless its something that looks like it would be carrying something profitable.
and something with longrange tractor beams would be realy nice.i'd sell my left toenail for it.

I don't loot wrecks at the moment. Because ships drop empty wrecks, and because there's no simple way to distinguish between wrecks I've checked, and ones I haven't checked yet. I can't target 'em all! :)
Hopefully, the patch this week will at least address wrecks vs. empty wrecks, and allow us to rename them so we can tell we've peeked in them already.

Why I gave up trying to loot wrecks
The reason is that there is no way to tell what cans you have looted and which ones you haven't. So like in a mission where I kill 30 ships I can't tell pretty quick which ones I"ve looted or not.
In PVP not sure why, the change in the rules is probably why. Or their holds were full or the guys buddy was there and they didn't want to get a tag.

Whine whine whine whine whine.
Tuesday the skill requirement gets lowered, you can all get a salvager fitted and you can all stop bloody moaning. I cant believe my eyes with some of the crap you are complaining about.
Yes, atm it is a little difficult to tell what you have looted and what you havent, but try blowing the dust off that grey stuff between your ears and maybe look for the wrecks from the bigger ships of your mission, and maybe, just maybe, use the tagging option that was brought into the game months ago.
Now go enjoy the game, or go enjoy another game if you cant.

Anyone tried such a setup on a destroyer yet? Slightly smaller cargo but more high slots. My corp apparently used to have a "Lootacat" in our hangar - a Catalyst with 5 tractor beams. Come Tuesday I'll be able to build the Lootacat II: tractors, salvagers and a coupple defensive guns (cause it's lowsec after all). May or may not use MWD as I'll have very low skills in it.
Another thing people have suggested are salvage drones. Anything in drone form gets my vote. >:)

If I stumble across some player ships wrecks, I usualy presume they have been looted already and only worthless mods are left in them.
Oveur said they were going to fix the wreck icon to show if it has been looted already or not, that might make a few more people loot unlooted player wrecks.

Im still all for a way to *pop* a wreck that you dont wish to leave in space, simply add a detonate/destroy/disperse button at the bottom of the wreck window and if you push that then you remove it from play with a pretty implotion.
Naturally such an act should count as if you opened fire on the wreck but thats a minor issue.
This would allow for people who wish to loot but dont intend to salvage the wreck to simply and easilly clear the wreck from space, as easilly as if you shot it pieces but consuming no amunition.

From my tryes, probably 4 tractors - 4 salvager, if they can be fitted (unsure on the CPU available). Or you can use an Exequror, slower, but it is possible to go over 1000 m3 of space with the extenders.

Looking at what I've got, I think it will fit 3 tractors and 3 salvagers easily. Good Electronics and Engeneering will help though (I have them to IV). I haven't got any tractor beams yet (I'm getting some built by a corpmate, I just have to supply the more expensive minerals) and of course, salvagers on Tuesday. But here's what it looks like so far:
Catalyst (Gallente Destroyer) 8 high slots - 2 Regulated Light Neutron Blasters w/ Antimater charges (Will pop a wreck fairly quickly) - 3 Salvager I (I don't know how many is too many to be usefull yet) - 3 Small Tractor beams
2 Mid Slots - 1 1NM Afterburner I - 1 Cargo Scanner (You can apparently scan wrecks to see if they're empty of loot or not).
3 Low Slots - 2 Cargo Expanders - 1 Nanofiber Internal structure (may be switched for another cargo expander or for grid/cpu/cap mods)
And ya know, all this has me thinking that a T2 salvager ship based on the destroyer with bonuses to salvage sucess would be sweet. The only thing destroyers lead up to now are interdictors.
The other thing I'm tempted to put on is a scan probe launcher to find wrecks in deep space but they take up 200 CPU and would have to be turned on and off to use them. ;p

That's logical, isn't it? Suppose that nothing would have changed, then mission runners would get their normal reward + time bonus + bounties + loot + salvage with salvage just adding to the pile. Lowering the loot reward keeps the total mission reward in line with what it used to be before the introduction of wrecks.
My solution would be to remove wrecks from missions. Let them only appear in belts and complexes. I only invest in businesses that even a fool can run. Because some day a fool will. (Warren Buffett) |

I was surprised to find an Expanded Cargo II, so that snuck into my shuttle's cargo hold, and later the 15 million ISK from selling it into my wallet, he he he. It pays to check out wrecks that are just sitting there with no one around.
Edit: And about collecting the loot from the wrecks after missions, I just sit my mammoth in between a bunch of wrecks, and drag them all to me, and leave them there before I go onto the next bunch so I know which ones I have already looted and so on. --------------------

Originally by: Frank Horrigan I' wondering this becuase I took my interceptor to drone space today, just to see if its fun..
Maybe because they think that it is a "wreck trap". Maybe they think the wrecks have already been looted.
I have already seen a few wreck traps around. They wait for you to steal from the wreck and then your dead.
CCP think these wreck fields are all very exciting but they are not if you have to get flagged to be able to salvage them. Even if they have already been looted you cannot use a tractor on a wreck not belonging to you or your corp. That sucks.
No I think CCP need to fix things.
1. ships drop a loot can and a wreck, normal can mechanics apply.
2. Wrecks are have no ownership can can be tractored and salvaged by anyone. Then the salvager can really be in business.
the patch changes will really not change much IMO. OK looters get to see if the wreck has been looted, which will help them. But will it help rigs get on the market ? NO.
Many NPC types don't drop any salvage. Drones don't. Structures dont. rig BPO requirements are too high, and many of the types do not drop in sufficient quantity.
CCP Fix it please !

Great except that's not enough cargo space for quite a lot of missions which means multiple round trips for looting and then salvaging.
Exequror has better cargo space but not enough high slots. hmmmmmmm !

Any timeframe/linkage on that? The patchnotes for Tuesday's patch don't mention this change. ----- Boyakasha! |

We had a gang doing level 4s last night, the amount of ships dropping nothing at all was becoming a real pain. Although the most annoying has to be 'You were sucessful but there is nothing in the wreck' message.
I was using a Cyclone with 4/4 tractors/salvagers and an AB, will add a cargo scanner next. We also had an indi following along to carry the larger loots.
It would be best if when ships were destroyed they only became wrecks if they had salvageable parts, and otherwise became cans. The current situation is like dropping a can after a ship kill(before the patch) and then going to loot it and finding it empty.
Also allowing the salvage module to loot items from the wreck would speed things up a lot, there is no reason for this not to happen as all the salvager is doing is pulling stuff from the wreckage(looting it). You could even bring out a combined tractor/salvager.

There seems to be a bug with the wrecks. When I try to loot stuff, sometimes the wreck seems to be empty but it isn't - or it takes to much time to appear so most of the players think "bah bugged wreck - close".

Because Cans dont require Survey lvl5 to be poped...
/me waits for tuesday patch
And this is the angoing misconception: You can still get loot of of wrecks just like you used to get loot out of cans, with no skill. Salvaging rig parts from wrecks is what requires the skill.

I was wondering about the Survey 5 thing. The other day one of my Corpies was killing Rats and I was running around popping them and taking the stuff. I do not have Survey 5. Also my Drones took out the Wrecks just fine after I looted them? What gives? here's a thought, if your BS is too big and slow to loot, adopt a relative noobie and let him loot the cans. If he decides not to share kick him from the gang (tell him theres a tech problem), let him loot the next can and blast him. But honestly most noobs are too in awe of your badness to even think about crossing you...instead they will worship you like an EVE god and follow you around like a puppy....on second though maybe thats not such a good idea |

I can envision the next generation of T2 frigates. Based on Tier 1 frigate hulls... the dedicated Salvage frigate.
With bonus going to tractor beam range and cargo capacity.

A Frigate? It better come pre-rigged for cargo space then
or make 1000 jumps back and forth...
A cruiser does the job now, with some cargo expanders..

When I NPC I have two accounts on two computers. The main one has a fairly active but resistance-based tank, with the second remote shield boosting and scooping loot/ salvaging. Well. I say salvaging, I was just about to train survey and mechanics to V, but they just lowered the req so am waiting till tomorrow to do it.

I use a gallente interdictor (destroyer would work the same but slower).
5 x salvager, 3 x tractor AB, cap charger 4 CEs
I have about 920 m3 cargo and it does 780m/s on AB. Works just fine.
Pity that it's still not worth bothering to salvage though. The drop rate sucks and it seems different NPCs have different subsets of bits you can get. You need to farm a huge amount of missions and different agents just to make 1 rig.
