I have been ganked before in high sec, and while it isn't fun, I accept it as part of the challenge. However, I am not very good or experienced at PvP, nor am I any good at plotting and carrying out revenge on the gankers.
So, I was thinking about a solution rather than the problem: instead of changing game mechanics to prevent ganking (Just fly smarter, darnit!), why not create a module that sets a trap on the wreck after the gank? It would increase the risk to the gankers, and give the ganked some small measure of satisfaction that at least the gankers get nothing tangible out of their efforts.
Here's what I'm thinking:
- New module or rig, that boobie traps the wreck.
- When the wreck is looted: boom. The wreck and everything in it is destroyed.
- The explosion would be area of effect, similar to how bombs work now, causing damage to the looting ship and all ships within range.
What are your thoughts? Is this a device that pilots would be willing to fit? I'm not sure I would fit such a device to a smaller ship, but I would definitely consider fitting to a hauler or freighter, or whatever.
The module/rig can be named the "Shipwreck" device. LOL
PS- I couldn't find anything like this using the search function; sorry if this has been discussed before. |

Nope. You have to think about the meta. This would be abused. People would be intentionally booby-trapping ships in an effort to indirectly destroy others. People like Code would love this. |

Thank you for those ... wow ... talk about a dead horse; those are from 2012. And I definitely need to get better at search.
Good point about the "meta" aspects. Yes, it has potential to be abused, for sure. So maybe instead of AoE it would be a targeted explosion.
Or a particular item that destroys the looting ship from within, or a virus of some sort that plays on the lore somehow, such as making the looting pilot's clone seem very attractive to the Circadian Seekers or something.
One of the threads linked above talks about disabling a looting ship for a short time. That could be interesting ...
But maybe there are too many implications I'm not considering that make this non-viable. As I said, I'm not very good/experienced with the PvP mechanics of the game, so there's probably a lot I am not taking into consideration.

Yep, been long enough that it shouldn't be closed for redundancy, but I'm not supporting this. Gankers actually do work hard, and do deserve the loot dropped by the unfortunate/unaware/intentionally bad. Its part of the game, an integral part, it gives the flavor of danger that is a hallmark of eve.

It's really, really simple.
Fly smart and don't give them a target to gank.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.

okay, ill use a few more words. This would destroy the game for gankers, esp. those that do so for profit.

Interesting. My understanding of "Nerf" was taking an existing module or ship and reducing the stats so it isn't as strong as it was before. It sounds like the term is more generic and refers more to just about any game feature that is added or changed from what we are used to.
I'll keep that in mind as I come up with new ideas. It is not my intention to "nerf" or balance anything. I learned from previous mistakes a long time ago and this hasn't been an issue for me since.
Instead I figured this idea would make things more interesting and/or fun for everyone involved in the ganking process. Many years ago on another toon I was on the other side, doing the ganking; A feature like this would have made it more fun for me by increasing the risk factor ... YMMV

You have a point about ganking for profit. Ganking is kind of like exploration ... you don't know what you are going to find during any given play session. It's either profitable or not depending on the loot drops, effort, and skill at ganking. So with that:
How about instead of an AoE explosion, a hacking mini-game instead? It wouldn't destroy the game for gankers, but it would add a layer of complexity. And, it would only apply to ships who carry the module, and not every ship would be fitted with one. Hacking difficulty would be based on the size of the wreck. The smaller the wreck, the easier the hack. If hacking fails, the wreck blows up without harming anyone. And no, I'm not suggesting a relic or data analyzer would be needed to hack the wrecks, but why not?

HAHAHA! Yeah, that would be funny. Yup, AoE could be really fun or really terrible depending on what your perspective is and what the local security level is. Gankers would find it funny or terrible: Funny for the LOLs of creating all kinds of chaos on the gates and terrible for destroying their profits. Ganked would find it funny or terrible too, depending on reactions from CONCORD, gankers, collateral damage, etc. |

That sais I do agree that the OP idea is not a very good one, with way to many possible ways it can be abused.

That might be what he's trying for, but what he's actually proposing would allow anyone with half a brain to wreak havoc on crowded gates. He's looking to implement empire smartbombing w/ out concord consequences.
I would think you would be all for this one.

I would be in favor of a module (or rig), that reduces the overall EHP of your ship, but it gives a larger bonus to reducing the loot that drops. As an example...
-5% to shield/armor/hull -20% to drop loot (This would drop the drop chance for everything to 40%)
Numbers are just thrown in there as an example, and does not give any thought to what they actually should be if this module/rig were to be released.
Lowering the average to make you look better since 2012.

Yes, that's correct. Your keyboard is jammed and you aren't able to hot key anyhow while your entire screen is covered by boobies.
I think it's fair. |

Like many ideas proposed here, it comes with little thought, doesn't accomplish what the OP hoped it would and ends up breaking Eve.
Therefore, I'm not at all 'for this one'.
