A spinoff from this thread. Maybe I'll get bored of this tomorow when the patch is released and I've actualy tried salvaging but untill then I'm pretty excited at the prospect of new toys.
It's so far been established that a specialized salvage ship needs the following things:
Ample high slots - fit multiple salvager modules and tractor beams A large cargo bay and ample low slots to fit expanders. Preferably at least two midslots - one for an AB or MWD and the other for a cargo scanner. A coupple guns to pop unwanted leftovers/fend off rats Good cap, grid and cpu to run it all.
Most of the good suggestions I've heard so far involve cruiser or destroyer class hulls - I'm in the process of setting up a destroyer myself.
Destroyer pros: 8 high slots each, realitively fast, cheap. Cons: Smaller cargo hold, some lack lowslots, vulnerable against cruiser rats on its own.
Cruiser pros: Larger cargo hold, more grid/cpu/hp, most will have enough of a drone bay to chew up npc rats its own size with. Cons: Fewer high slots, somewhat slower
Thoughts on the individual destroyers:
Gallente (Catalyst) - What I'm flying. 2 midslots and 3 lows, about right for the above described requirements. Minmatar (Thrasher) - 3 mids and 2 lows. Can take a setup very simmilar to the Catalyst although you loose the third mid slot "to play with". A cap recharger would fit nicely in the third midslot. Has a missile turret which you might fit rockets on for faster wreck dispersal or regular light missiles for defensive capabilities (I don't think a light missile can take out a wreck in one shot). Caldari (Cormarant) - 4 mids and 1 lone low slot. Makes sense for the shield and ECM-favoring Caldari but you won't get over 500m^3 of cargo on a single low slot and the midslots seem a bit of a waste on a salvager unless people find/CCP makes more usefull things that require them. Also has 1 missle turret. Ammar (Coercer) - The opposite of the Caldari - 4 lowslots and 1 mid slot. You'll be able to fit 4 expanders but you won't be able to use a cargo scanner on wrecks (don't drop the afterburner/mwd or you'll be sorry). This may cost you some time but may be made up for in the ammount you can carry.
My setup (pending Tuesday, repost from the other thread) - the P.R.S. Lootacat II Catalyst (Gallente Destroyer) 8 high slots - 2 Regulated Light Neutron Blasters w/ Antimater charges (Will pop a wreck fairly quickly but you can get away with cheaper ammo if you want, or switch to rails for better defense) - 3 Salvager I (I don't know how many overkill yet - 2 may be "enough".) - 3 Small Tractor beams (4 would not be overkill)
2 Mid Slots - 1 1NM Afterburner I - 1 Cargo Scanner
3 Low Slots - 2 Cargo Expanders - 1 Nanofiber Internal structure (may be switched for another cargo expander or for grid/cpu/cap mods)
Anoother good thing about this setup is that a newbie can train for the whole thing within a coupple of weeks (affording the tractor beams may be another mater - I'm using connections in my corp to get some made fairly cheaply. Can't comment on salvager cost until the price stabalizes.)

Entire setup for this one below should be well below of ship cost, and is not extremely skill-intensive (MWD is "toughes" to fit, skill-wise).
My very own "Salvager One" : Cormorant (Caldari dessy) HIGHS: 6x Salvager MIDS: 1x MWD, 3x small cap battery LOW: Inertia Stabilizer
Worst case scenario (low electronics skill), you can still fit about 4 salvagers. With salvage level 3 you still (mostly) salvage anything in one 10-second go (6 salvagers), rarely need a 2nd activation set. Cruises at well over 1km/sec, cap holds alternatively for either MWD or full salvager use, stabilizer helps align, accelerate and stop well enough. Cargo space is a "mere" 450 cubic meters, but that's usually fine for L3s (not so good for L4s). _____ -sig-

Edited by: Hockston Axe on 04/12/2006 22:38:02 I was using an Omen to great effect for can looting, but there arenÆt enough highs for it to be an effective salvager. I like to run with 4 salvagers, I donÆt want to sit at each wreck for more than 30 seconds, even that adds up too fast. With only 1 tractor left towing the cans in that becomes the hold-up.
Lately IÆve just been going through the pain of stripping my Apoc after each mission, and refitting for salvaging/looting. 4 tractors and 4 salvagers, a MWD and an AB (I love having both when looting, try it and youÆll never go back) with the lows filled with inertia stabs and nanos. It works well but I miss having a separate looting ship that I can just hop into and out of.
IÆd rather have a dedicated (and cheaper than an Apoc) ship for looting, but destroyers have no cargo, and if you fill the lows with expanders you crawl. Cruisers donÆt have enough highs. My Apoc in salvage mode does about 650 m/s w/AB and over 2 k/s with MWD and can turn on a dime, while still holding almost 1000 m3 with an expander. edit: and it can still bump a covetor 40 km.

Quote: Destroyer cons: Smaller cargo hold
Cormorant has 450m3 of cargo space.
Quote: Cruiser pros: Larger cargo hold
Moa has 250 m3, blackbird has 305m3, caracal has 450m3, osprey 485 m3 of cargo space

On the other hand i believe caracal is fine for this job, ferox even better.

I use a scythe for salvaging, not only can it fit 3 salvagers and 2 weapons (or any combination of salvies and tractors) but it also LOOKS the part whilst it's doing it and with three low slots that just SCREAM cargo expander it has a goodly sized cargo bay. A little weak on the drone side of things but hey, can't have everything. It also has the side-bonus of being a cheap cruiser (nobody wants them ;.; )

I use a gallente destroyer. Agile, good cargo, and lots of high slots.
High 4-tractors and 4-salvagers Mid AB and a cap recharger Low 200mm plate, 2-nano's
In most lv 3 missions i have over 20 cans to go through, with 4 tractors i can keep them comming in as fast as my salvagers are going through them. I find the cap recharger very nessary as i burn through cap very fast. The plate I put on as an afterthought incase some mission rat spawned late, or for some reason an NPC rat jumps in. All i have for defense is my speed, stunning good looks and 1-light drone

Not my set-up of choice, but the Exequror is hands down the best looter in the game and is now the best salvager. You'll save so much time running back to a station by virtue of never running out of cargo room during a looting/salvage session.

Currently I'm working with a Catalyst for salvaging and looting level 3s. I may go back to the Exequror if higher skills return salvage more quickly. Being able to throw a salvager on something and pull in other loot at the same time makes things much quicker than in the Exequror right now. Even more so if you can move to a wreck outside of 20km while salvaging because of a spare tractor beam.
The Exequror has a good combination of quick looting and capacity. With Gallente Cruiser 4 it gives 840m3 of cargo capacity (if my math is right, which may not be the case). With salvaging introduced the problem became waiting on the salvagers (only at Salvaging 2 right now, with no rigs of course). So I'm working a Catalyst setup as:
Highs: 5x Salvager I, 3x Small Tractor Beam Med: 2x Named Cap Rechargers Lows: 3x Named Cargo Expanders (24%)
I have an AB to replace a mid slot, but haven't the powergrid to put it in (with Engineering 4).
Some quick (and possibly flawed) math showed that for multiple targets, or getting a lot done quickly, a destroyer seems best. And of those, the Catalyst and Coercer can store the most if you pack the low slots with cargo expanders.
I haven't had a chance to check out that many frigates or cruisers, so I can't say much for them. I like getting a lot done quickly, and neither frigates nor cruisers seem to be overflowing with high slots. Going even larger, such as a battlecruiser or battleship just seems ridiculously inefficient for a looting/salvaging ship given it's slow speed and high cost. Something like an industrial would be good as it would have the best cargo capacity, so no returning to a station to drop stuff off, but I've never seen one with more than maybe two usable high slots.
I've done some of the math on some of the mentioned cruisers, it still seems the Exequror is the best cruiser for a looting/salvaging job, unless the fifth high slot is worth it. Then the Osprey might do well. The drone capacity is listed if I remembered to check for it, because none of my loot/salvage setups had any other defense. I don't really care for cargo scanners either because I'm grabbing everything.
Beta Hull Mod Expanded Cargo or Expanded Cargo Hold II gives 27.5% (according to current info in the EvE market)
Thrasher (Minmatar destroyer): Cargo: 400m3 Targets: 6 Speed: 240m/s High: 8, Med: 3, Low: 2
With full expanders: 400 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 650.25m3
Coercer (Ammar destroyer): Cargo: 300m3 Targets: 6 Speed: 220m/s High: 8, Med: 1, Low: 4
With full expanders: 300 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 792.79m3
Catalyst (Gallente destroyer): Cargo: 400m3 Targets: 7 Speed: 225m/s Drone cap: 5m3 High: 8, Med: 2, Low: 3
With full expanders: 400 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 829.06m3
Cormorant (Caldari destroyer): Cargo: 450m3 Targets: 7 Speed: 210m/s High: 8, Med: 4, Low: 1
With full expanders: 450 * 1.275 = 573.75m3
Osprey (Caldari cruiser): Cargo: 485m3 Targets: 5 Speed: 165m/s Drone cap: 20m3 High: 4, Med: 4, Low: 3
With full expanders: 485 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 1005.24m3
Exequror (Gallente cruiser): Cargo: 600m3 (10% bonus per level, at least level 4 if flying a Gallente BS) Targets: 5 Speed: 170m/s Drone cap: 40m3 High: 4, Med: 4, Low: 3
With full expanders (Gallente Cruiser I): 660 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 1367.86m3 With full expanders (Gallente Cruiser IV): 840 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 1741.04m3
Scythe (Minmatar cruiser): Cargo: 440m3 Targets: 6 Speed: 215m/s Drone cap: 5m3 High: 5, Med: 3, Low: 3
With full expanders: 440 * 1.275 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 911.97m3
Caracal (Caldari cruiser): Cargo: 450m3 Targets: 6 Speed: 187m/s Drone cap: 10m3 High: 5, Med: 5, Low: 2
With full expanders: 450 * 1.275 * 1.275 = 731.53m3

Typhoon
5x Salvager I 3x Small Tractor Beam
1x 100 MN AB 1x Cargo Scanner 2 spare slots for whatever you like (light shield tank perhaps)
4x cargo expanders 3x nanofibers
5x large drones 5x medium drones
No need for guns to deal with npcs with the drone bay on this ship
Cargo bay can hit over 2000m^3 depending on which cargo expanders you select (1900m^3 or so with Betas), speed is decent even with the expanders fitted. My poor afterburner skills allowed for speeds over 450 with a 100 MN II and local nanos. J.A.F.O.

Matterthief (Arbitrator) Hi: 2x tractor, 2x salvage Mid: 10mnAB II, 3x drone tracking link Low: MedRep II, Nano, 2x cpr
Goes at just over 500m/s, is a fairly powerful fighter (can solo Lv2s easily, and handle respawning ships in Lv3s) has a good cargo hold (only 450, but enough for loot + salvage of most lv3s) and salvages pretty fast with Salvage Lv4. :)

For mission running some ships with larger target numbers than 5 work well, for 0.0 I would think an exequror is the best hands down, easy to run, nice cargohold so you don't need to run back to station or the POS over and over ^_^.

Have to agree with the Typhoon. Sure it's more expensive than my domi, but it's great fun, fast, impressive, cute and with it's 175m^3 drone space and 8 high/7 low combo it's an excellent looter/salvager/lil help ship

Some folks I know have used the Coercer, Exequror, and Megathron. Personally, I like my Eris for the job. It's speedier than a T1 destroyer, for one thing. Of course, the skill reqs make it a poor choice unless you can fly them already.
Eris 2x tractors 6x salvager I 1MN AB II Small named cap battery 4x named cargo expanders
It gets over 900 m3 pretty easily, and using 3x salvagers on each tractored wreck results in successes in fewer cycles than 1x salvager usually takes. Activate all 6 salvagers on one wreck, and you've got a darn good chance at success on the first cycle.
Salvage tackle and the cap recharge or speed rig would be nice, once people have started building them in decent numbers.
Edit: additional advantages include a speed over 700 m/s with an afterburner and the ability to target up to 7 wrecks at once.

Figured the bellicose needed a decent roll so there it is... good cargobay decent speed with the drones fitted it can rat reasonably well (been as low as 0.3 where she struggled) that and it looks like a salvage ship :)
found it useful in missions as well... the 5 extra drones come in useful

This is the killer question I must ask.
What Character is suited for this assuming your also going to build Rigs from salvage also?
The PvP character to fly the Salvager (would hurt ratting I can assume), Or the Industrial Alt to salvage? (opens up the ratter, but makes you run more then one client)?

Here is my Coercer setup, it's rather straighforward.
Hi: 7 salvagers, one tractorbeam Mid AB II Low 4 cargo expanders
I use it to sweep up the mission zones after my harby has laid waist to all the heretics infesting it. Strongly considering taking off a salvager for another tractorbeam once I hit Salvage 3. Also looking at removing an expander for a CPR. Overall quite happy with it, cleans out dead space zones very quickly. Of course I've cleansed them of heretics with my harby first.

I'm using a Cormorant. You can skip the MWD with a Tractor beam in hand I think, at least in highly farmed belts (NPC rat farmers I mean). 7 Salvagers, Tractor Beam, few cargo expanders, few cpr's and a small armor rep (I'm in 0.0). Bit risky, but seems to work nicely.
I suppose another midslot would be great, but I'm working with what I have right now.

I've just kitted out a Thrasher as a Fighter/Salvager for easy rat 'plexes.
Highs: 3 x Salvager 1, 4 x 200mm Auto's (or 150's), 1 x tractor. Mids: AB, Sensor Booster, Med Shield Booster Lows: 200mm Armour Plate, Small Armour Rep
Ideally I'd like to get a webber in the mids instead of the shield booster but I don't have enough CPU. Maybe I'll sacrifice the armour plate for a CPU upgrade and just rely on the shield booster to keep the shields up and running.
I have started using this in Gisti 2/10 plexes....very easy rats admittedly but you can kill stuff quickly and end up with a good haul of wrecks to salvage pretty quickly.

Myrmidon is absolutely excellent for ratting/salvaging as main damage is dealt via drones wich leaves all highslots available for whatever you like
my setup: High: 4xsalvager, 1xtractor beam, 1xarmored warfare link(rapid repair) Med: 10Mn AB II, 4xEutetic caprechargers (t2 if you fancy it) Low: 2xEANM II,1xDC, 1xcaprelay, 2xMAR II
This mofo takes on all guristas with no problems, can run those 2 reppers nonstop. if you use warfare link you get about 120armor repped per second...... (i do)
If you really play on the attributes of this ship and rig it for lower capuse and even faster repair it would be really badass my reptime on MAR II is 6.9sec on it without rigs
It is also fast enough to loot cans relatively fast with the AB
I love it
