How addictive is EVE? And should it have a health warning on the box?

Another person posted a similar thread earlier, but i wanted to see how other people place eve in their lives. I have lost two jobs because of EVE, once because I stayed up so late I didn't get up in the morning, and the second time because I was playing eve and just couldn't leave it to go to work. I've never had a very good relationship with my father, and now i've moved back home I seem to be placing EVE above him, even though we really need to patch things up. Luckily though, I can play EVE all day and get paid for it. But I'm interested to know, does EVE affect anyone else this badly? The fact that it's become more than that to someone is not the fault of the game. Take responsibilty for your situation and do somthing about it. Don't try to deflect the blame onto somthing else becuase in the end you're just kidding yourself. I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

I've been playing EVE since the end of beta and from launch. For me it is addictive at times, but then after I while I kinda get fed up with something and take a break. Usually I still keep the sub, and train skills but some times I haven't aswell. I have 3 accounts, whom I play seperately. Roleplaying if you wish. I have never lost a job to EVE though, and frankly if it came to that I would seriously moderate myself. I played a lot of Planetarion back in the day when it was new, in big alliances and we won many times. Then I played 12-16 hours a day some times, because I was in University. Which kind of made me do very very bad at studying, and I did not do all that great. Looking back on it now, I wish I had studied more and played less. But hey, it was fun too. I guess the clue here is balance, but not everyone can moderate themselves at any point in their life. Maybe you can never moderate yourself, or maybe you will find some other motivating factor in your life that will make you play less or take breaks too. But I think I speak for most of us when I say we love EVE, even though we say we hate it some times. We will always come back, but maybe not always in a hardcore fashion

I play Eve maybe a couple of hours an evening if I am lucky (either side of DT) Friday night and Saturday night I get a few hours in and sleep in the next morning. The rest of the time I am Mr Joe Average. I work, brew beer, raise a family, do weights, drink beer, watch the SciFi channel, pay mortgage - rinse / repeat. Eve is no more addictive than any other game. If you are as hooked as the OP then you have an addiction problem. If you got cut off from Eve you would likely get hooked on something else. Don't blame the game and think restricting access to it will help you. You need to help yourself handle your addictions, all of them. To do that you need to take control of your life, the work and the recreation. Or not. >> RECRUITING <<

Never lost a job or anything to eve (the game) Eve (the forum game I came close) The man without a face... The company without a clue.

I definitely agree that the majority of the problem lies in the individual that allows himself to become addicted. Lack of willpower=bad. That said, I also think MMORPGs cater to and are designed as games to be as addicting as possible, so they are also not absolutely blameless. In my opinion, EVE is much less addicting in other MMORPGs, though. When it comes to examples, I think WoW is a great example of a game that caters to an addicted lifestyle with its PvP ranking system (I know, it changed yesterday, don't yell at me) and its raiding system. To be competitive in doing well in the old pvp system required more then 8+ hours a day, and 16+ hours a day to get to the top ranks. I understand a person who allows themselves to play that much has a self-control problem, but there is no need to design a system like that in the first place, and research should be done to avoid situations like it in my opinion.

But I dont risk my job over it!! It's not Eve's fault or CCP's fault you lost your jobs, its because you have no self-control. Delete your characters and uninstall it. If you do not do that, you have no one to blame but yourself.

On the flipside, when I get fixated on the more productive things, I abandon gaming completely. The only difference for me with Eve was that I set a new record for spending all my free time playing 1 game (I think it was 2-3 months before I actually did anything else with a measureable portion of my time after starting eve), and that it is so dynamic (due to being massively mutiplayer) that I always come back to it if I 'burn out' (all other games I abandon for at least a few months after playing them every free minute for a few days/weeks. Aside from that it's really no different from any other game. YMMV ofc. Incidentally I don't see a problem with playing games 24/7 if that's what you want to do and it doesn't impact the really important stuff. If it's what you want to spend your time doing, I think it's fine as long as it doesn't adversly affect anything else. My personal concern is that I do have other stuff I want to spend my time doing, but always get drawn back to games. Come to think of it, the 'other stuff' I do is websites about games. Come in here, starting a thread about it, gets the advice he knows is right but doesn't want to hear, and then acts high and mighty about it. shrug.

Well, then the loss of your jobs cannot be solely attributed to your playing Eve, but must also be due to your immature attitude towards work at the time. Also, I believe it is misleading of you to say in your original post that you "can play Eve all day and get paid for it". You do not get paid for playing Eve, you get paid for the job of running the lan/cyber cafe. You can play Eve while you do this (legitimately or not, i don't know) but your pay is not linked to this. To be honest I agree with the poster who said this is really about the person not the game - and in my opinion connected to this it comes down to how much else you have going on in your life. I used to play WoW far too much - until I got a new job which I love to bits and woke up to the fact there are other things to do with my time. Now I play Eve but usually only when I can't find something else to do - or because I feel like playing - not because I can't stop myself. Either way Gavriel, I hope that you can get some other focus and enjoy your life more - because the tone of your OP suggests you aren't very happy with how things are right now. Good luck in getting some new direction!
