Eve fufills one of the many needs required to remain mentally balanced. If you are enjoyining it then your need for entertainment is filled not to mention your need for social interaction is filled through eve though rl is also nice Sig Nerf - Cortes

btw does your dad watch TV? Unless everything he watches is documentary then he's wasting his time even more than you are cause TV is just observation without the interaction whereas eve demands your attention and input from you.
In fact even if everything he watches is documentaries and news then he's still wasting his time. Knowledge is pretty useless unless you're actually going to put it to practical use, it doesn't do any good just sitting in your head.

Point out everything you can learn from MMOs.
Money Management, making cash, social interaction (more importantly in eve, Politics), math. You have no idea how much math you can apply to MMOs.

Just the fact that your father is actually arguing with you about an MMORPG tells us a lot about him. He's got issues. And you have nothing to do with it. Your options are clearly: Ignore him and go on with your life or Do as he says so he won't be too upset.
Good luck either way ____________________________________________

Just tell him that he can either give you the money for Eve each month, or one movie + food each week.
He'll quickly see the wisdom of going with Eve then.

Edited by: Mar Idoun on 07/12/2006 07:25:41 there's probably a different perspective on technology that you and your dad have; a generation gap, essentially. My parents watch TV, read newspapers, magazines and use the phone a lot more than I do. However, how my parents and I spend our free times hardly differs. While my dad reads the local/regional paper, i'm on news aggregate sites like Fark or Digg and exploring online publications of traditional media like the NY or LA times and especially Chinese newspapers like Xinhua and China/Shanghai Daily. While my mom watches CSI i play Eve or something else. It's taken quite a while for them to see how what I'm doing isn't different then what they are doing, but hopefully your dad will come around to it.
I've actually written a pretty long Thesis on the use of Computer Mediated Communication within virtual environments, specifically Eve and the players and technology that create the community, it's really interesting stuff if you're a research student in the Sociology department in your Uni and your methods Prof is enlightened and open enough to know the impact of such interaction (He actually suggested the topic to me).

Some pro arguments for EVE:
- trains your english skills (that allways counts for something) - its certainly more interresting than TV - getting into "bad" company is not very likely - its cheap compared to most other hobbys, i certainly spend more for one evening playing billard with my friends and thats without taking beer into account - do a direct comparison to your dads mayor hobby, its a pretty good bet that you will come out on top. Certain win if hes a football fan (come on, grown men running after a ball?????). - Oh and another favorit to counter is the "get out in the fresh air" argument is by showing them the air polution data etc. If that doesnt work get out and start playing soccer or even better baseball in the garden (preferably a friends) and crash a few windows "accidently" that should get the message across for sure.
Im pretty happy that i pay for EVE on my own and only have my GF *****ing about the time i spend with EVE. ------------------------------------------------------- Sig was removed due to derogatory comments towards a group of people. -Karl Chroimcer

Games are entertainment, they don't have to have any benefits other than entertaining you.
But Eve does anyway.
Learning anything you don't absolutely need to know is a waste of time, give it less than a century and you'll be dead anyway, and what good will your knowledge do you then? People who spend all their time learning, studying, 'improving themselves' either do it because it entertains them on some level, or they are wasting their lives. ----------

You will simply have to compose yourself to counter any of his points.
If he complains you have been on for a certain period of time, ask him in return what he has been doing for the last 3 hours whilst you were doing your homework.
If he complains that Eve has no benefit to you, argue that you meet new people everyday across the world and find out something different about other cultures etc.
The good old arguement that TV is the same only without interaction is true but also you can argue that your Father that TV is more unhealthy than PCs because they have a higher radiation output (although this only applies if you use a TFT monitor against a Tube or CRT television, not flat screen tvs).
I am 20 and I have been arguing with my parents for years about the benefits of my mainstream form of entertainment being the PC and theirs being the TV. It has always come down to the point that they watch the TV in the dark, I play my PC in a well lit room, hence I do not watch TV with them as I value my eyesight. Edited by: Donna Darko on 07/12/2006 15:20:36 Heh :) I had the same argument for a few good years about games in general with my father, until one day I got really ****ed and took this to an extreme.
I went to the library, asked the lady there to help me find psychology books/articles/etc. that deal with child development and the role games play in that. Gather all this data, and start writing a paper on this. If you make it serious, complete with quotes and references (the librarian can help you structure your paper too), and you include some of the specifics of EVE (i.e. economy, money management, learning to solve problems with the tools you have, etc. there's more examples above), you'll probably shut your father up forever.
It certainly worked for me, he has never bugged me about games ever since.
P.S. It will be worth your time to do a paper on this, trust me. If nothing else, you'll realize how games affect development :) Stories. |

I thought this was going to be another one of those "wah wah i lost my ship i quit" type posts.
I think it would be a good idea to get him to try it, I bet that would work :)
On another note, this game is EXCELLENT at showing how economic supply in demand work in a free market. There are even market history charts you can look at for study. Products people want, pricing based on supply (as in Rokhs costing 350 million ISK when they first came out and seeing people buy them), and little to no GM market maintaining.
There is also a thread in OOP about a guy who learned about some chemistry stuff and it helped him pass his class because he played EVE.
But the very best example of something that EVE can teach you is leadership. For example, in order to be a fleet commander of a very large group of ships you have to be able to manage people effectively in order to be really effective. And, as anyone will tell you, REAL leadership skills will make you more successful than a doctorate in any field. -- The universe is governed by the aggressive use of force. Hows this for a little note! Oh, and YARRRRR!! - Petwraith I prefer the term RAWR - Xorus |
