Decided to take a three year brake when my daughter was born. Now trying to come back and it is surprisingly complex as everything feels different.
Could someone summarize, what in the world has happened in EVE, mechanics-wise mainly?
Everything seems different, UI seems confusing and clunky vs the good ol.. even DOTLAN renders the universe in different form. Cannot use the star map effecitvely anymore etc

I think the most efficient way to catch yourself up besides just getting out there and figuring it out would be to review the DevBlogs and patch notes.

How would many reading this subforum for new players have a frame of reference to answer? Would'nt you be better served posting this in another part of the forums? Welcome back.

You don't have to use the new map. You can still use the old map just go into escape menu and find it in settings.
Also CCP supposedly made some timeline website for players returning from a break and new players also to catch up on game changes depending on how long that they have been gone.
And I agree with you that much of what they changed was for the worse. Yes everything got prettier but unfortunately in most cases less effective. |

Welcome back. It will be unpopular with many but may I humbly suggest a little time in high sec to reacquaint yourself with the basics of the game as it is before heading off into the rest of the game. |

3 years downtime is almost the same as being almost New Citizen to me and I had impression that NC Q&A actually has active players answering questions :)
Anyway, thanks everyone for pointing out the should be obvious urls, had some hard time reading the dev blogs posthumously as they are 90% filled with issues only interesting at that point of time. Lots of reading ahead again.
Otoh, other angle I was going for was: "Which changes in last few years have made most difference in life on EVE?", but maybe that is question better asked on another forum.

There are people here who are happy to answer specific questions. The answer to the question you asked might as well be "42."
Even your refined question is very broad - it depends a lot on which space you are in and what you plan to do.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So, why do I post here?
I'm stubborn.

There are, but fyi, they changed the release schedule for once every 6months to nearly once every month(ish) however no one will take enough time to type out that much information as often as this question comes up,particularly when a link will provide what you're looking for.

Sov changes in nul often referred to as Fozzie Sov.
The jump range and jump fatigue additions that preceded Fozzier Sov.
Changes to the max reprocessing rates in the various areas of space.
A few minor tweaks (read more restrictions) on suicide ganking in high sec.
Changes to scanning that have made it stupidly easy in some ways and even harder in others (new map).
Many of the sites you had to scan for before are now simply warp to them from your overview.
Balance passes on many of the ships and modules in the game. If you remember the Rattlesnake, Gila or Worm of old look at them now as examples.
Creation of some new OP ships / fits while some of the OP ships / fits from that past have faded into memory.
Changes to what used to be called can flipping virtually eliminating that activity from the game.
I will stop there but there are many others. |

Just get back in and play the game, trying a little of everything you used to do - I'm in exactly the same position as you (same hiatus!), and I'm finding a lot has changed. Tooling around lowsec and trying to yarr again is quite liberating, as I'm sure that my hitherto tried and tested fits will no longer work as before but it'll be a joy to find out how outdated they are :)

dont shoot high sec seeker drones.
I came back after 2 years, and did some high sec mining to gain a bit of isks. When seekers entered the asteroid belt, I pulled out my drones and engaged the seekers. When my mackinaw was out of shields, I docked for my Dominix. After killing 3 out of 5 seekers, reinforcement arrived and insta popped my Dominix :S 2 hours later, I re-entered the asteroid field again with my mackinaw. Upon arrival, the seekers were still there, and insta popped my mackinaw. I am still pissed about this happening in high sec (0.9)... |
