what is more effective on a cruiser with MWD?
Or is it a mix that makes it spicy?
Do nanos have stacking penalties?

it depends on your skills and the speed of the cruiser.
Both make you accelerate faster, but stabs do it better.
Stabs will give you a bonus to speed when using your MWD because you will have less mass[important in the MWD speed boost calculation], how much i dont really know.
The nano's give a fixed boost, so the faster your cruisers base speed, the worse the nano's become.
The easiest way is to just get a cruiser and test different combinations and decide what you like.
And no, no stacking penalties on any of them

ATM i think stabs are better for example a fitting I tested on my crow. First with a nano max. speed with Tech II mwd 4447 m/s than i switched over to a stab max. speed 4891 m/s ....

Mass is stacking penalized? Since when was there a mod that changed mass that was penalized?
Now, you can hit your "max % boost" from your AB/MWD if you get your mass low enough, but they arent actualy stacking penalized.

I have not actually tested it, but the stacking penalty mentioned may be the intuitive logic penalty inherent in any diminishing principle:
1,000,000 * 0.90 = 900,000
900,000 * 0.90 = 810,000
The percentage of the bonus didn't change, only the principle vs result.

Nanos are better for battleships, stabs for the little stuff. I'm using a geddon as my salvager, and got better speeds with nanos than stabs. Think its because nanos add a flat amount of speed, which amounts to ~15-20% on battleships and ~5% on inties.

Mass is stacking penalized (that's what the devs have said and all the tests have shown at least).
For max speed in a straight line 2x inertial + rest nanofibers. For max orbiting speed, 3x inertial + rest nanofibers.
Never use more than 3 inertial stabilizers. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

Im iv tested this. i get much better top speed with Stabs than nano's mY nanophoon goes like 3200m/s with 5 nano's and T2 MWD With 5 stabs it tops out at 3752.... After i post this ill try her with 7 stabs and see what top speed i get wit a simple T2 mwd.

Could you at least test what I said instead of testing something completely else before you say my numbers are wrong? Try 2 inertial stabs and 5 nanofibers, and 3 inertial stabs and 4 nanofibers and I'll bet you 100m that it will go faster with an mwd than the 7 inertial stabilizer setup. (or for your original setup 2 inertial stabs and 3 nanos). ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

made my megathron orbit at 4km range at 1km/s + while MWDing :)
cant hit enything tho whit big guns :P
edit: you will get more speed out of the nanos but more agil out of stabs

I tired your set up. its Nice but i got a higher top speed with 3 stabs and 2 nano's. So you were right. i hit 3812m/s yes u can say pretty ubber

Bull it u mixx 3 stab and 2 nano u get less mass = more push out of MWD. Nano give a base speed boost. stabs reduce mass....so....

Are you so lazy you can't take 10 seconds to test this for yourself? Fit 3 inertia stabs. Take a look at your sig radius and mass. Fit 8 inertia stabs and repeat. It's blindingly obvious they're stacking penalized.

What about this weird shield boost penalty on inertial stabilizers? It doesn't seem to work ...

I have an ares that I fly with a Gistii A-Type 1mn MWD and 4 local hull conversion inertia stabs, it tops out at 7435m/s (need to train accel control 5 here soon).
For every inertia stab that I swap with a local hull nanofiber I drop speed by a LOT (like 400m/s). So even with 4 inertia stabs you'll still go WAY faster with an MWD on than you will with 3 inertia stabs and a nano (at least on an ares). Also with 4 inertia stabs I can maintain about 60% speed while making a 120degree turn or so (ie: make a 120 degree turn and only drop to 4km/s).
Anyway, bottom line is with an mwd or AB, Inertias RULE!

A balance of both is almost always better. Depends on the base speed though. I did alot of testing on stab combos on SiSi.
Vigil runs best at 2 stabs 1 overdrive (2 stabs and 1 nano is slower than 3 stabs). I hit around 10km/sec with drugs. Typhoon runs best at 3 stabs 4 nanos. Hit around 5500m/sec with drugs. Hurricane runs best with 3 stabs 3 nanos. Hit around 12km/sec with drugs and a 100mn MWD II.
Fit stabs first if you want speed from a boost (AB/MWD), then play with nanos or overdrives. They are stacking nerfed though so going past 3 or 4 won't help much. Nanos and overdrives are not stacking nerfed but they add a straight bonus, which in the case of fast ships is bad, slow ships is good. The more you add, the less effect each has (in percentages).
